Game of the night: Blues at Bruins

If you can only watch one hockey game tonight, you probably wouldn’t go wrong picking the St. Louis Blues (14-3-3) at the Boston Bruins (14-6-1).

Both teams come into the matchup on a hot stretch. Boston’s won five of its last six; St. Louis’ entire season has been a hot stretch, really.

We’re hesitant to call this a possible Stanley Cup Final preview, given so many East-West matchups could qualify as that in today’s NHL, but it wouldn’t be untrue. And what a Final that could be — two big, tough teams that don’t mind getting their noses dirty, but also boast their share of talent.

If there’s one thing that separates this season’s Blues’ team from previous editions, it’s the ability to put the puck in the net at a high rate. St. Louis has the No. 2-ranked offense in the NHL, averaging 3.40 goals per game, and led by Alexander Steen‘s 17 tallies. Last season, the Blues averaged 2.38 goals per game.

If there’s one thing that separates this season’s Bruins’ team from previous editions, it may be rookie defenseman Torey Krug, a dynamic offensive threat on the back end who has 12 points in 21 games. The 22-year-old has his issues defensively, but his offense makes up for those, according to Bruins coach Claude Julien.

“I think you just let him play,” Julien told NHL.com. “His game offensively is almost a natural part of it, so you let him do that stuff. I don’t think there’s too many times where he makes bad decisions up front. If he does, it’s going to happen once in a while. There’s always a risk and reward; you want to minimize that risk. That’s what you want to do. But right now I think he’s doing well offensively, so I’m certainly not going to take that part of his game away from him.”

Guys I’m betting tonight at the pool shop , I’m going with Boston , but can anyone tell me otherwise or I’m ok going with Boston ?

  2. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 12:40 PM

    Go with Blues… :)

  3. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 12:46 PM

Blues have faired pretty well in Boston over the last few years. With exception to the SJ game, they come out strong against good teams, and they have the size to keep up with Boston physically. Plus it’s my team, and I want them to win. Haha

Chara is playing as good as it gets in goal. The B’s are still a little out of sync on offense but getting better every game. This should be as good as advertised.

How does Rask feel about this?

  5. stonebullet - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:01 PM

Coin toss for me on this one. As a Bruins fan they’ve been hit or miss all year to start the season. Sometimes coming out firing on all cylinders, then letting up and losing. Others, they are overmatched and pull out a win.

My heart says B’s (if they show up), my head says Blues, my Makers Mark says it’s going to be a good game either way.

I am in a scotch phase here and will be drinking Lagavulin but agree with you on the game completely.

The Bruins are going to be without Dennis Seidenberg, which might be a bigger factor than most people think. Dennis is a WORKHORSE and will be missed and is probably the most underrated defenseman in the league. Any clue on the nature of his injury? Nothing has been said by the Bruins yet…

    Let’s go Brew-ins!

  7. phillysports1 - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:18 PM

Just because Dennis seidenberg is out , and blues having one of the best offense makes me turn back to St. Louis . But come on guys make a pick blues or bruins ???

    • hockey412 - Nov 21, 2013 at 1:22 PM

      Blues

Should be a tight close playoff type game. I like the better goalie in these types of games. Rask is that goalie. Bruins. Win.

  9. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:17 PM

Chara in goal??? Am I missing something? Lol

    • amityvillefun - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:35 PM

BIG Z! Defenseman, Power play center, goalie, whatever the Bruins need. The dude is big enough to be a one man team.

Easily one of the best Bruins signings ever. Chara rules.

Does anyone know if Colaiacavo is going to play tonight? The other night in Washington, the Capitals kept getting the ideal matchup of Ovi vs Ian Cole. Obviously teams are taking note that he’s a weak link, and Carlo would be a definite upgrade.

    • blues1988 - Nov 21, 2013 at 4:37 PM

you’re obsessed dude, you comment about cole on every single blues article. get over it and no it would not be a definite upgrade. cole has done just fine, yes he got owned by one of the best players in the world but i blame that on hitch for letting that match up happen.

  11. bruinsfan55 - Nov 21, 2013 at 3:46 PM

Heading up to the game tonight, going to be a great game. Even though Seids is out hopefully Miller can play solid on the back end there. Go Bruins baby!

  12. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 5:06 PM

Hitch doesn’t have much of a choice during away games. Cole has been getting owned for years now. I don’t just stare at the puck when I’m watching a game. I’m constantly watching to see of players are in the right position. Every player messes up now and then, but not as much as Cole. Then when he gets caught, he gives a half ass effort to correct it. Not to mention he gets his clock cleaned multiple times a game. He has spurts of good play sandwiched between play that is painful to watch. Mistakes are one thing, but laziness (i.e. lazy passes through the middle of our defensive zone) is something I can’t stand. There is a reason he has ALWAYS been a “healthy scratch” when our other d-men are healthy.

I respectfully disagree and say the game of the night is Rangers at Stars…. Go Stars. PP goal drought at home ends tonight!

    • dallasstars9 - Nov 21, 2013 at 10:01 PM

      Told ya.

  14. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 6:18 PM

Does anyone know if TGI Friday’s has a lot of televisions? Of course the wife decides she wants to do her birthday dinner at 7pm tonight…

Sometimes I just want to go all Varlomov on her! JK (but I’m serious about the T.V.’s)

  15. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 7:16 PM

Here we go! Good luck Bruins and LGBlues!

  16. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 7:27 PM

Already Cole is reaching for pucks instead of using his body, he fell down in the neutral zone and causes an odd man rush, and got away with a stupid crosscheck in the back. As I said, he sucks.

  17. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 8:58 PM

Cole turns it over and it leads to Boston’s first goal…

  18. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 9:59 PM

Great game. Figured it was going to OT or SO. Weird seeing the Blues outmuscled, but the Bruins did exactly that for most of the game. Hats off to you, Boston. Good win Blues!

  19. sabatimus - Nov 21, 2013 at 10:22 PM

That first goal by the Blues was one of the worst softies I’ve ever seen.

  20. jhaegs - Nov 21, 2013 at 10:58 PM

It barely had enough to cross the goal line untouched!
