A text from Mike Richards helped Claude Giroux settle down

When Claude Giroux started this season without scoring a goal in his first 15 games, things got a bit stressful for the Philadelphia Flyers captain.

What helped settle him down? A few words from an old friend as Dan Rosen of shares.

“It wasn’t going right, and I got a nice text from Mike Richards. … I think he gave me a boost to relax and play the game,” Giroux told on Tuesday prior to playing the Ottawa Senators at Wells Fargo Center. “It’s a great game. There’s a reason why we play in the NHL. It’s because we know what we’re doing. It’s just about going back to basics, going out there, have fun, play the game.”

Richards was a teammate of Giroux’s in Philadelphia before he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. So how has he done since getting Richards’ text? Not bad. Two goals and three assists and the Flyers have won four out of their last five games.

Perhaps once Richards’ playing days are over with he can start a motivational text message business. Who couldn’t use a verbal kick in the pants every now and then?

Wonder what the text said. Probably something like”keep up the good work, and soon you’ll be traded to a contender”.

        Blomfeld, is that you?

    • ibieiniid - Nov 20, 2013 at 12:47 PM

the Kings were more of a contender than the Flyers (who just made the cup finals) at the time of the trade?

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 20, 2013 at 1:01 PM

You’r right. The trade made them contenders. Thanks again Paul!

      • ibieiniid - Nov 20, 2013 at 1:11 PM

Yeah, your sh**ty trash talk is going to get more and more sh**ty as the Flyers keep winning and winning. Keep it up, just gives us more material to quote you on when the Flyers beat the Pens in the playoffs again this year.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 20, 2013 at 1:12 PM

then again, I guess you’ll just change your handle and move on to the next team you’re a fan of like the rest of the Pens fans on this site.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 20, 2013 at 1:26 PM

Haha yea because the flyers are making the playoffs. The flyers are 13th in the weakest conference and 2nd to last in the weakest division of hockey. You beat the pens 2-1 and they beat the flyers 4-1 earlier. You think all that adds up to the pens getting eliminated by the flyers in the playoffs? You must be using rob ford’s contact for your supply.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 20, 2013 at 1:29 PM

you sound like you’re even trying to convince YOURSELF the Flyers aren’t making the playoffs. how about 4-0-1 in the last 5, since their cap’n woke up. you’re scared, and you don’t have to admit it, we know. The Flyers are the Penguins’ Achilles heel and it tears you up.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 20, 2013 at 1:35 PM

Haha he’s woke up huh. He has 2 goals and still has been pretty invisible 5v5. Yes 4 out of 5 is good but iv watched all the games. There is nothing about that team that scream playoffs worthy. Hey even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in awhile. Enjoy it now because you only have 62 games left to watch them play.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 20, 2013 at 1:37 PM

ya, will do. thanks for the permission to enjoy my favorite team. i needed that.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 20, 2013 at 1:48 PM

Your welcome! You also have my permission to learn how to take a joke, and to make a joke at the expense of my favorite team the penguins, rather then take things personally.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 20, 2013 at 2:07 PM

thanks for that too. hey, since apparently we need permission to make jokes, who gave you permission to make “jokes” on every Flyers article that comes across your screen? because I didn’t see anybody give you that permission, and yet, you do it anyway.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 20, 2013 at 2:12 PM

Again you are right. Better report me then. Let me know how that works out for you.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 20, 2013 at 1:09 PM

seeing as how he had 0 through 15 games, then he got a text, then he scored 2 in 5 games….. I think it’s possible.

      • laxman1944 - Nov 20, 2013 at 1:18 PM

        All caps “Piney”…..nice

Get back under your bridge you piece of crap troll

Still waiting to see a picture of the 2 Pitt Penguins that brought the cup to your office/basement

        what gives??

  2. zta7991 - Nov 20, 2013 at 10:29 AM

Richards almost always has been a class act…then again most hockey players are the nicest and classiest athletes

  3. canucks30 - Nov 20, 2013 at 10:31 AM

It was a “Brett Favre” text

    • canucks30 - Nov 20, 2013 at 11:09 AM

  4. kastout11 - Nov 20, 2013 at 10:31 AM

I was a huge Richards fan, and was upset when he was traded. Schenn and Simmonds are good young players, and even though Richie got a cup, I still like the trade.

  5. sjsharks66 - Nov 20, 2013 at 10:45 AM

Did he attach a selfie of himself in the mirror holding the cup also?

    • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Nov 20, 2013 at 11:13 AM

He should send one to the entire sharks team. Maybe it will be a motivation tool for you guys to finally win a cup instead of settling for regular season champs every year. Future reference, not wise to poke fun at a franchise that has cups when yours hasn’t even been to one.

      • canucks30 - Nov 20, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Does that mean fans of the Victoria Cougars, Montreal Maroons, and Seattle Metropolitans get to poke fun at the Flyers?

      • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Nov 20, 2013 at 11:31 AM

Yeah if you can find any still alive we’ll have that conversation but I’d have to say there credibility went into the trash when all them teams folded or merged. Not to mention it’s pretty simple winning cup in 1920 when there was only a handful of teams in the league hence the reason why the Habs have 24 or so cups.

  6. broadstreetsbaddest88 - Nov 20, 2013 at 10:46 AM

Richards is a class act. One of my favorite flyers. Still wish we could of kept him. It’s smart for G to listen to him considering he’s one of few that’s won at every level of hockey possible. Hope these scouts are right about Laughton being the next mike Richards cause any team could use a player like him. I love the way he plays

  7. orangeandblack67 - Nov 20, 2013 at 11:12 AM

And that is why the number 18 Sweater has a spot on my wall

  8. sjsharks66 - Nov 20, 2013 at 11:16 AM

Yeah, back in the 70’s where you guys fought your way to the finals. It was a joke, calm down Mr.Broadstreet.

    • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Nov 20, 2013 at 11:50 AM

Only if you had a clue. I know you just started watching hockey within the last few years so don’t expect you to know. Look up there stats of 74-75-76 and tell me they won 2 cups by beating them up. They produced one the best lines in history with the LCB line with over 300 points and 141 goals while beating powerhouse teams. Do your homework next time. You look stupid in front of all these people

      • ibieiniid - Nov 20, 2013 at 12:42 PM

        but…. but… that doesn’t fit his narrative!

      • moarjam - Nov 20, 2013 at 4:32 PM

Calm down broadstreet. This was damn near 40 years ago man…were you even alive?

      • namriverrat69 - Nov 20, 2013 at 8:57 PM

They weren’t called the “Broadstreet Bullies” due to their charm.

  9. luvusa1 - Nov 20, 2013 at 11:29 AM

Yeah, back in the 70′s where you guys fought your way to the finals. It was a joke, calm down Mr.Broadstreet.

what a dumbass comment….you usually provide good insight on here, but that is just plain ignorance…yeah, Flyers had no skill guys on those!

  10. antmel30 - Nov 20, 2013 at 11:36 AM

Sjharks are you really that stupid. Fighting doesn’t win cups. Fighting doesn’t score goals and win gms. You have to have the amount of skill and grit in any championship team. That comment is jus assodine. To win back to back cups with no skill and just fighting would be a near impossible. Flyers beat the soviets one of the most skilled teams in world in 70s by what fighting them to a victory. They out scored teams in scoresheet not won by pentalty minutes you fing retard. Be a hater all you want but please make your comments respectable. You just look like a moron.

    • ibieiniid - Nov 20, 2013 at 12:43 PM

Assodine sounds like a hemorrhoid creme.

  11. chrisk61 - Nov 20, 2013 at 11:56 AM

i think this suggests giroux isn’t ready for the C in philly. you need a text from an ex-teammate to help you snap out of a funk ??

i don’t think eric lindros, dave poulin, etc would ever need such intervention. giroux getting the C seems like another rash flyers ie rash ed snider decision. probably based on his fight and gm 6 hit on cynthia crosby in 2012 playoffs. 2 plays don’t make a C…

    • phillyphanatic77 - Nov 20, 2013 at 3:34 PM

Yeah Lindros only had the “C” stripped off his jersey for not being tough enough (atleast according to Clarke)… he’s not the best example of leadership.

    • flyerspsu - Nov 20, 2013 at 3:38 PM

i really dont think that attempt at a “fight” with crosby had anything to do it with him being captain … im thinking him being the future of the franchise being over a PPG player since getting 1st line minutes and always showing up in the biggest games, i.e. 55 pts in 50 playoff games dating back to his early years when he was just on the 3rd line but always raised him game to the next level, 2012 was just another example of it but on another level with 17 pts in 10 playoff games and literally putting the entire team on his back, his character and hard work are a couple of traits that he exemplified a lot that year but has always had and is a big reason why he became captain

  12. sjsharks66 - Nov 20, 2013 at 12:36 PM

Really? You are using the “beat the Russian’s” argument? Didn’t they almost leave the game because all the Flyers were doing was fighting? Also, didn’t Bobby Clarke break one of their best players ankle in game 6? Look, you can bring up how they out scored opponents all you want. I never said they had no skill guys. Obviously fighting does not put pucks in the net. However, they received their nickname for a reason. It was a different sport back then. Yes, the Flyers won back to back cups. It is impressive, but the game has changed. The same team you are defending is having just as hard of a time winning a cup as the team I cheer for. It was a joke, stop getting so worked up.

    • lilgurgi - Nov 20, 2013 at 1:49 PM

“didn’t Bobby Clarke break one of their best players ankle in game 6”??? Are you combining histories here? The Flyers/Soviet game was a 1 game situation. Clarke did the chop to the Russians in the Super Series between Canada/Russia. Just stop now, no comination of any stats (created or factual) will make you look smart after the “Flyers fighting to 2 cups” comment. They were a skilled team that could also intimidate you as well. You can have the best of both worlds.

      • mcphillthy - Nov 20, 2013 at 11:56 PM

If he has to ask questions about whether something happened or not he is obviously talking out of his ass. He probably googled flyers and soviets and typed the first answer that popped up. Keep it up, Googles!!
