Mike Smith vents after being hit again by Shaw

Nov 15, 2013, 8:55 AM EDT

Shaw hit

Back in the 2012 playoffs, Chicago’s Andrew Shaw received a three-game suspension for charging into Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith. More than a year later, it looks like that incident still isn’t far from Smith’s mind.

With Phoenix and Chicago’s game on Thursday tied at 4-4 in the third period, Shaw once again nailed Smith with enough force to knock them both down.

That’s not to suggest that the two events are comparable. Shaw raced behind the net and directly into Smith in 2012 while last night’s hit might have even been unintentional contact given that Shaw was positioning himself near the crease when he appeared to be shoved by Phoenix forward Lauri Korpikoski.

Still, Smith took offense and went after Shaw as soon as they were on their skates. As a result, Smith was given a two minute roughing penalty that canceled out Shaw’s minor for goalie interference.

“He has a reputation of two years ago, knocking me out and it was kind of a dirty play back in front again,” Smith said after the game, according to CSN Chicago. “I’ve talked about it numerous times with the league. When we talk about vulnerable hits, that’s a goalie down in front trying to make the save and guy sticks his elbow out. That’s attempt to injure as far as I’m concerned.”

Smith stayed in the game, but suffered a 5-4 shootout loss to the Blackhawks.

‘Hawks, Shaw agree on two-year extension

  1. gret9 - Nov 15, 2013 at 9:04 AM

Smith dove two years ago in the playoffs and I see he is still a whiner.

    • davebabychreturns - Nov 15, 2013 at 9:11 AM

Smith is a huge diver and regularly runs interference for his defensemen behind his net (like the play that got Alex Edler suspended.. not that his hit wasn’t illegal) but Shaw’s hit was still suspendable and would clearly violate Rule 48 today to boot.

But yeah, not many goalies out there who I’m less sympathetic towards than Smith.

    • westinpat - Nov 15, 2013 at 9:35 AM

Exactly why I can’t respect him.

    • thailer35 - Nov 15, 2013 at 9:57 AM

I’m sorry, I have watched this a hundred times, and I have a really hard time calling it a dive. Especially the last angle. Watch it closely.

Now watch this play. This is what diving looks like.

Do I think Smith should be tough enough to get up a lot sooner than he did from that hit? Of course. But solid shoulder-to-head contact was made, so I don’t think it was a dive.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 15, 2013 at 10:28 AM

I personally think the dive was on top of a bad hit. You can’t say he didn’t get hit solidly in the head, but you also can’t say he didn’t overdo the fall a little bit too, not taking into consideration how long he was down.

      • comeonnowguys - Nov 15, 2013 at 10:42 AM

Of course it’s an illegal hit. I’m not even saying she shouldn’t have been knocked over. I’m saying he rolled on the ground while they refs were debating throwing Shaw out of the game, and as soon as they did, he popped up and never missed minute, showing no ill effects from the hit.

If you want to get pedantic, fine. It’s no a dive. But is that not embellishment?

      • comeonnowguys - Nov 15, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Please. He flops around like a carp.

How many other goalies act like this? Maybe I’m just spoiled watching goalies like Howard and Crawford and Rinne most of the year that don’t require a timeout whenever someone hits them.

      • thailer35 - Nov 15, 2013 at 10:55 AM

I was at that game, and I don’t remember him popping up immediately after the game misconduct was given. I can see the arguement for embellishment, absolutely. I go back and forth with Smith. He puts up great numbers like his 48 saves last night, but then he throws fits, and after a lot of goals he throws up his arms as if he is blaming his defense or something, and there is nothing that drives me crazier than that. Maybe it was embellishment, maybe he really was injured and stayed in because it was the playoffs (he did sit out of practice the next day after all). I’m just saying that – from what I see – this play is very much in the gray for how quickly people are demonizing him.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 15, 2013 at 10:57 AM

comeonnowguys brings up a pertinent question, the difference between a dive and embellishment. the only difference, in my interpretation, is that embellishment only happens when there could have been a penalty called on the same play.

        wait, did you say pedantic?

      • thailer35 - Nov 15, 2013 at 11:14 AM

Either way, I’m really disappointed GMDM gave him the contract that he did. No way he deserved five or six years, I can’t remember what he got. I’d rather we brought Bryz back. He did just fine here and would do well again under Tippett’s system. Plus he would have been cheaper, but that ship has sailed. I just don’t see Smith being successful for that long.

      • suckit619 - Nov 15, 2013 at 12:21 PM

        Smith is a

  2. comeonnowguys - Nov 15, 2013 at 9:12 AM

I remember that series. Smith was writhing in absolute agony, grabbing his head in obvious pain.

Until they gave Shaw the game misconduct.

Then he hopped up and didn’t miss a minute of the rest of the series. He’s a flopper, and a classless prick.

    • comeonnowguys - Nov 15, 2013 at 9:24 AM

I thought for sure after the second goal we were going to see another one of these:

    • awade9233 - Nov 15, 2013 at 12:27 PM

are you done with your crying, or do you want to vent some more to feed your fetish for hating mike smith?
Just wondering, if Mike Smith is a classless prick, what is Crawford? Which goalie had that eloquent speech on live TV after winning the cup last season??

      • comeonnowguys - Nov 15, 2013 at 12:33 PM

        That’s totally unfair.

        Smith’s never won a Cup. :)

      • hawksin5 - Nov 15, 2013 at 2:40 PM

@awade. who are you kidding? Mike Smith is the most classless goalie in the league. I lost all respect for him after the Shaw incident. do you think from that hit he caught him up high? yes. do you think it was with enough force to knock him down? ehh maybe. but enough force for him to throw off his helmet and whip off his gloves and flop around on the ice like a baby seal? PLEASE. it was an oscar-worthy performance. I wish, looking back on that, Shaw would have actually hit him. and hit him hard.Smith is worse than Kesler and maybe even worse than Marchand.

      • endusersolutions2013 - Nov 15, 2013 at 4:22 PM

While the comment was inappropriate, it is also IRRELEVANT to the discussion. Or you a big proponent of the straw man technique of debate?

  3. themohel - Nov 15, 2013 at 9:27 AM

This Smith guy has soccer player diva written all over him.

    • ibieiniid - Nov 15, 2013 at 9:50 AM

him and Holtby would get along.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 15, 2013 at 12:40 PM

the thumbs downers will see eventually….

      • babykaby - Nov 16, 2013 at 6:34 AM

        You’re an ass.

  4. cweez2 - Nov 15, 2013 at 9:27 AM

Don’t you have a curiously-timed skate sharpening to tend to, Mike?

  5. dontbsuchapuss - Nov 15, 2013 at 9:53 AM

Smith is a puss go grow a pair and play the sport as it is he should be happy he wasn’t playing twenty years ago when he would of got his ass kicked for complaining about contact. Watch the replay his player pushed shaw into him

  6. bluelinemh - Nov 15, 2013 at 10:12 AM

I’d just like to point out that at the game in 2012 (which I was at) Smith got up and was “ok” immediately after Shaw got his game misconduct, call me crazy,d but I find that fairly odd especially since he was on the ice for a good 5-10min.

In case you hadn’t already guessed, yes, I am a Hawks fan.

  7. holleywood9 - Nov 15, 2013 at 10:12 AM

Obvious fix for last nights play… Tell ur teammates not to push shaw into you

  8. sjsharks66 - Nov 15, 2013 at 10:31 AM

Anyone else want to see Smith vs Emery?

    • ctochester12 - Nov 15, 2013 at 10:39 AM

Oh that would be the coolest thing ever.

    • comeonnowguys - Nov 15, 2013 at 11:38 AM

If memory serves, he wanted no part of Crawford in 2011 when Crawford confronted Smith about giving Toews a high shot while Toews was going behind the goal.

Can’t imagine he’d want a piece of Emery.

    • suckit619 - Nov 15, 2013 at 12:24 PM

      Smith wouldn’t last 20 seconds

      • babykaby - Nov 16, 2013 at 6:36 AM

How long would you last? You’d probably wet yourself at the mere thought of having to fight.

    • endusersolutions2013 - Nov 15, 2013 at 4:25 PM

Don’t think Razer has been accused of flopping/wussing before;)

      • babykaby - Nov 16, 2013 at 6:37 AM

He’s still nothing more than a thug who should be in jail for unprovoked assault.

  9. hammerhead5573 - Nov 15, 2013 at 10:51 AM

Pot meet kettle. Shaw is likely 6″ smaller than Smith and took a dive when Shaw hit him a few years back . I wonder what Smith had to say when his goon teammate took out Hossa for the remainder of that same playoff series. In other words shut up idiot and stop letting smaller guys in your head.

  10. muckleflugga - Nov 15, 2013 at 11:03 AM

i’m curious, have you ever strapped-on a set of pads…?

you have some interesting views on the game, and are well equipped in the art of regurgitating established fact. it’s all coloured with the sensibilities one might expect from the sort of couch commando

again, have you ever played competitive contact hockey?

    • suckit619 - Nov 15, 2013 at 12:24 PM

muckle – You sound like an internet hockey all-star know it all. You’re just a douche that is upset because your team sucks

  11. muckleflugga - Nov 15, 2013 at 11:18 AM

both shaw and smith are classless clowns…neither would have survived in the sixties and seventies when it was still a man’s game

can you imagine these women looking across the ice at the broadstreet bullies? creamed their jeans, wot

shaw, like the hawks generally, have bought into the theatrics of the game; why not, the canucks nearly dove their way into a championship

unlike canucks, who have shed the stigma for the most, hawks still use the flop to great advantage, and that rounded out by a captainly whine

    ditto coyotes

it seems the big men go down easiest, bickell, hossa, shaw and smith, pure shakespeare on any given night

    they’re all classless clowns

    • suckit619 - Nov 15, 2013 at 12:22 PM

How is Shaw a classless clown? He’s a gritty player that anybody would want on his team…. You’re probably just mad that your team sucks.

    • hawksin5 - Nov 15, 2013 at 2:32 PM

@muckleflugga hold on, let me stop laughing…… one second… ok please give me ONE example of how the blackhawks have flopped any time in the last four years. PLEASE. And why are you bringing up the broadstreet bullies? are you a butthurt Philly fan? you want to know what would happen if the blackhawks played the bullies? they would sit Hossa, Kane, Sharp, and Toews, and Crawford and the score of the game would end with a double digit win for the hawks.

  12. chanceoffleury - Nov 15, 2013 at 11:53 AM

Mike Smith whining. Wow. They should really take him seriously. It’s so unlike him. In other news the sky is still blue and water is still wet.

  13. suckit619 - Nov 15, 2013 at 12:20 PM

Mike Smith is a little crybaby It wasn’t even intentional…. And if he wants to be tough, how come he is scared to fight Corey Crawford. Phoenix sucks

    • dadisthatu - Nov 15, 2013 at 1:05 PM

Yea Phoenix sucks, thats why we are 4th in league… makes sense

      • hawksin5 - Nov 15, 2013 at 2:33 PM

we will see where you finish at the end of the year. my guess is not even in the playoffs.

      • thailer35 - Nov 15, 2013 at 3:34 PM

Seriously dude? The Coyotes played like garbage last night and still took it to a shootout. Have fun with your hangover this year.

      • alexbaymac - Nov 16, 2013 at 12:19 AM

Hangover ??? “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” –Inigo Montoya

If by “Hangover” you mean having 2 regulation losses in the first 19 games of the follow-up season a hangover…if by “Hangover” you mean getting points in 17 out of 19 games & 30 of a possible 38 points a hangover, then awesome! The Hawks will be unbeatable when the hangover ‘finally’ wears off, right?
When you make dumb comments like that, you make the other 12 Yotes fans look stupid, too.

  14. jhuck92 - Nov 15, 2013 at 2:41 PM

Shaw was pushed from behind (from Smith’s own man, no less). I saw it live. And that b***h of a goalie has the gall to try to start something? Let’s be clear, this isn’t at all similar to what Kadri did a few days ago. Smith knows he dove back in 2012, writhing in “pain” and crocodile tears. He hasn’t changed.

If you want to talk about questionable hits, let’s talk about the knee to Oduya’s head, *and then* Doan’s check on him at center ice immediately after as he was trying to get back to the bench.

    Dirty play? Hilarious.

    • jonbbbfromaz - Nov 15, 2013 at 4:32 PM

Shaw clearly sticks an elbow out at smith after he falls on smith who had been trampled all game especially after a first goal that was clearly goalie interference. Smith grabs h and gets roughing? Thats what is hilarious. All Smith probably did was tell Shaw to use some proactiv on his disgusting pizza face. F the hawks forever.

      • hawksin5 - Nov 15, 2013 at 7:30 PM

haha the Coyotes fan is insulting Shaw’s skin. Thats what this has come down to…

  18. endusersolutions2013 - Nov 15, 2013 at 4:29 PM

On the subject of “selling the foul”, this is a great short clip.

  19. sprtsfan1 - Nov 15, 2013 at 8:19 PM

Hahahaha@ all the Coyotes fans and the Broadstreet Bully. Jealousy at its best. Hawks fans loves it.

  20. fiddytucker - Nov 15, 2013 at 11:06 PM

Go Yotes! Winning an argument on the internet is like winning the special Olympics… Either way your still retarded
