Nazem Kadri‘s three-game suspension is Trevor Smith’s opportunity. The Maple Leafs have called up the 28-year-old forward from AHL Toronto ahead of tonight’s contest in Buffalo.

Smith has already played nine times for the Leafs this season, scoring once with no assists. But he’s been a sensation with the Marlies, piling up 12 points (4G, 8A) in just seven games.

In addition to Kadri’s absence, the Leafs will be without injured centers Tyler Bozak and Dave Bolland versus the Sabres tonight. The two teams play again Saturday in Toronto.

The Leafs also assigned d-man John-Michael Liles to the Marlies.

Doesn’t Liles have to clear waivers again?

Doesn’t really matter either way. No one wants him and the leafs would be ecstatic if someone claimed him

I’m guessing Leafs couldn’t move Liles before deciding to waive him again to send him back to the AHL. Darren Dreger has mentioned Carolina maybe interested in Liles earlier in the week. I guess the tires were kicked as the Canes want to make a roster move as some of their guys are getting healthy. Jim Rutherford has proven in the past he wants him some John Micheal Liles and he doesn’t let his weird player obsessions go. However, I can’t see him taking Liles off waivers and I can’t see him trading for the guy once he clears waivers. However, if Liles clears waivers but doesn’t get sent to the AHL, can a team trade for him and not have to worry about waivers again?
