Pacioretty ‘very, very upset’ over mayor’s Desharnais diss

Nov 11, 2013, 6:45 PM EDT

Struggling Habs forward David Desharnais has faced his fair share of critics this season, but his latest is something else.

On Sunday night, Montreal mayor Denis Coderre vented his frustrations with Desharnais via Twitter, with this:

Translation?

“Hello? Can we get a one-way ticket to Hamilton for David Desharnais please …”

Hamilton is, of course, Montreal’s American Hockey League affiliate.

Desharnais, 27, has just one point in 17 games this year and has already served a stint as a healthy scratch. Teammate Max Pacioretty jumped to his Desharnais’ defense following Coderre’s tweet.

“I’m very, very upset about that,” Pacioretty said, as per CBC.”What, do you think he’s gonna coach our team tomorrow? That’s embarrassing.”

Montreal head coach Michel Therrien, who’s been displeased with Desharnais’ production all year long, defended his player by saying the mayor’s comments were “inappropriate.”

Desharnais is under fire due to his lack of production, mangified by the face he’s in the first year of a four-year, $14 million extension.

The diminutive center burst onto the scene in ’11-12, scoring a career-high 60 points in 81 games, finishing 24th in the NHL with 44 assists (more than Patrick Kane, Jordan Eberle and Patrice Bergeron). That earned him the big-money extension, which has raised expectations and demands.

Meh, at least he didn’t hit the crack pipe before he posted that (I assume).

    He’s French!!!

Completely inappropriate comment by someone who has to set an example and is a public figure. The fact that he tweeted it is even worse, because he didn’t just blurt it out somewhere. He took the time to think of it and write it and still said it. Who does he think he is, Tyler Seguin?

So politicians can’t be fans? That makes perfect sense.

Oh, Coderre would never get involved in anything about hockey…except…
“June 2006: Liberal MP Denis Coderre has launched a $45,000 defamation suit against the Phoenix Coyotes’ Shane Doan in response to the NHL player’s $250,000 defamation suit against him. At the heart of the conflct are allegations Doan called four francophone on-ice officials “f—ing French” during a game in December 2005. At the time, Doan was given a gross misconduct penalty and a report was filed with the league. But Doan was cleared during a subsequent hearing at which he flatly denied using the slur.
Doan launched his suit after Coderre questioned his selection to the Canadian hockey team for the Turin Olympics on the basis of his alleged remarks.”
…I guess Montreal got the mayor they deserved…and yes Max, he might actually coach the team tomorrow. One day protecting his own and the next sending them to Ontario (i.e. French Quebec’s version of Hell).
P.S. Look out Don Cherry. Coderre is just biding his time seeing who next to sue for defaming ‘his people’, and now he’s the mayor of a bankrupt city. Yet another entry in yet another politician’s shameful resume.

Don’t worry Montreal fans… you’re mayor may be an embarrassment, but he’s got nothing on Toronto’s Rob Ford.

Not a wise thing for the mayor to do. However, he seems like a proud habs fan. We have all said something similar about our teams we cheer for. We are just not in the publics eye.

Expecting Coderre to shut up is like wishing time to stop, it’s impossible. I heard him on the radio today and he was expressing no remorse at all about his comment. When it comes to hockey Coderre behaves like a fan, not a public figure.
