The mysterious puck stopper known as Ilya Bryzgalov will soon be bringing his talents, which includes his off-ice personality, to Edmonton.

On Friday, the Oilers announced they had signed the free agent goalie to a one-year contract. Bryzgalov hit celebrity status within the hockey world for his often amusing antics and bizarre soundbites, which we all witnessed on HBO 24/7 in the lead up to the 2012 Winter Classic.

However, his time with the Philadelphia Flyers was reduced to just two seasons, before he was bought out during the off-season.

“We get a goaltender that has a history of being a high-performer in parts of his career and we get a guy who I think that’s very motivated and he’s going to have a chance to be a good goalie,” said Edmonton’s general manager Craig MacTavish, as per the Oilers’ website.

While this deal was announced today, and with the Oilers having already played 17 games and now sitting last in the Pacific Division, MacTavish said he had conversations with Bryzgalov dating all the way back to the NHL Draft in June, as per Mark Spector of Sportsnet.ca.

“I think he’ll surprise us, in terms of his character,” MacTavish told Spector.

According to Derek Van Diest of the Edmonton Sun, Bryzgalov, who last played an NHL game way back on April 25, will first be sent to the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League.

This signing turned out to be the headliner in a pair of moves made by the Oilers today.

They also sent defenseman Ladislav Smid to the Calgary Flames, although there have been reports that the Oilers are talking trades with the Flyers.

I figure he is motivated to stay in the NHL and still compete, he wouldn’t have stayed here training if he didnt want to keep playing here. He could’ve easily bolted to Russia, so he has a chip on his shoulder and something to prove, hopefully he can have a revival of sorts in Edmonton

I can think of 51 million reasons for Bryz to stay motivated. The guy is a nuttier than squirrel poo.

So, I see. His problems last year were caused by a lack of motivation.

Hmm. We shall see. Motivation seems to be the name of the game.

With that defense in front of him he’s sure to put up big numbers.

  6. c9castine - Nov 9, 2013 at 12:56 AM

this guy is gonna prove a lot of people wrong. ill be around to remind you all i said that too.

if somebody can tell me why he is a bad goalie, id be surprised. if you haven’t noticed, philly is even worse without him and apparently “upgraded their roster this off season. this guy won 113 games over 3 years not long ago with about a 2.3 GAA and .916 SV% (quick math, at which I’m not very good).

you telling me he doesn’t deserve an NHL job? why cause he talks about bears and the north pole?

  7. canucks30 - Nov 9, 2013 at 1:03 AM

    Yup. He’s motivated all right

This is the guy who didn’t want to go to Winnipeg (from Phoenix) because it was “too cold & they have no parks” ?!?!?

Note: Ilya Bryzgalov is a big researcher of “the parks” & knows how many every city in North America has

The universe is so humongous big, and we worried about motivational problems here

  12. crazemastercraze - Nov 9, 2013 at 7:55 AM

He would have been a better goalie in Philly if he had mark streit playing in front of him….. Teehee!

  13. insanelomein2 - Nov 9, 2013 at 9:07 AM

    @ c9castine:

The Flyers have a much sounder net minder in Mason. Bryz wouldnt leave the crease to slow a loose puck and when he did he turned it right over to the opponent.

True the Flyers do look worse without Bryz but that is for lack of offensive production NOT because they cut Bryz.

  14. c1md6 - Nov 9, 2013 at 11:03 AM

He did make one of the most amazing glove saves I’ve ever seen on “kristopher” letang in route to dismantling the Pittsburgh frauds in 6.

  15. isithockeyseasonyet - Nov 9, 2013 at 12:20 PM

Motivated? For what? Last time I checked, he’s still getting paid by the flyers so whether he’s in the nhl or not, still collecting decent sized checks for being a disaster
