Report: Flyers hold ‘long team meeting’ after Devils shutout

Nov 7, 2013, 10:22 PM EST

Onlookers essentially described Thursday’s Devils – Flyers game as whatever is the opposite of a clash of the titans, but New Jersey left Philly fuming with a 3-0 drubbing. This prompted a “long meeting” for the Flyers after the game, according to CSNPhilly.com’s Tim Panaccio.

This post will be updated with details if they come, but the lack of details says something, too:

If you’re on “Claude Giroux goal watch,” the number obviously remains at zero. He’s been unable to find the net on 31 shots on goal in 15 games and now has a -11 rating. Simple stats can sometimes miss the total story, yet there’s little doubt that times are rough for Giroux … and his team.

The Philadelphia Daily News’ Frank Servalli notes that Flyers fans even booed when the team took a timeout … so yeah, things are bad.

  1. killerpgh - Nov 7, 2013 at 10:30 PM

It will be interesting to see who took charge in this meeting. Was it Giroux? When things are going this bad you don’t have to have a letter on your chest to be pissed off an try to right the ship. But if you do have the “C” on your chest you probably shouldn’t sneak out without talking to the media. Some of those Philly hockey writer are pricks and will make a huge deal about him leaving. More so than the way he has been playing.

    • c9castine - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:34 PM

flyers fans should do themselves a favor and just come out with the truth of the situation now. the sooner fans start to realize it and yell about it the quicker the team owner reacts. your are his money maker…he will eventually listen.

your GM sucks and has made enough bad decisions to unravel the franchise. your coach is not NHL worthy, might be a good hockey mind but he is just another recycled Flyer put into the spot for the wrong reasons. Your captain is nothing more than a good hockey player and has done nothing to deserve the C, no before the fact or after. Your culture is detrimental to everything you do – the Broad Street Bullies are gone. The more you try to keep the culture alive the further down the hole you will go. to win in the NHL these days you need smart coaching, calm leadership, sound financial and personnel management, skill, hard work, speed, and toughness.

Right now you’ve got none of it.

      • icelovinbrotha215 - Nov 8, 2013 at 6:59 AM

Yet you are missing the point when it comes to the blame game: it falls on Mr. Snider. He is the one who hires the GM. The GM hires the coach. The coach, along with the rest of the organization, slaps on the ‘C.’ We can fire every GM and coach that walks through the Center but the problem will still exist. Snider isn’t going anywhere so us Flyers are stuck with this culture.

      • ryanrockzzz - Nov 8, 2013 at 8:20 AM

Trust me, Flyers fans are well aware of how inept the management is. They have ruined this team with poor roster decisions, free agent signings, and overrating young players. Put that with the owners mentality to play hockey like it was the 1970’s, and all Flyers fans can do is hope for some luck down the road.

      • philafly - Nov 8, 2013 at 8:23 AM

c9castine – I am assuming you aren’t from the Philly area but that is exactly what has been happening here. I think it was one or two games ago that the fans were chanting “Fire Holmgren” in the 2nd period. For the most part, everyone here is completely fed up with the Flyers’ “culture”, Ed Snider and certainly Holmgren. The tipping point was when Snider said that the club did not need a “fresh perspective” after firing Laviolette and promoting Berube. The thought process is flawed from the top down. They can’t score so they bring in Downie? They have made Luke Schenn a HEALTHY scratch several games now while JVR plays very well in Toronto. The GM has got to go. The process of recycling former flyers is absurd and people here are over it, completely. The only exception at this point is Hextall as Assistant GM and that is only because he helped turn around the Kings. Time to give him a chance here.

      • WillIEverSeeACupInMyLife? - Nov 8, 2013 at 10:55 AM

@philafly; Did you really just type an entire paragraph saying “everyone here is completely fed up with the Flyers’ culture” , and “The process of recycling former flyers is absurd and people here are over it” and then in your last sentence say ITS TIME TO GIVE HEXTALL A CHANCE???!!!

      • philafly - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:12 AM

Yes. I did. I can see what that seems contradictory, but he is the only one that actually has accomplished something outside of Philadelphia. The others brought back or promoted (Gagne, Berube, Downie, Knuble, etc.) were all either past their prime, unproven, incapable, or just flat out not that good. At least Hextall accomplished something with a different organization recently and wasn’t brought back because he was good in the 80’s and 90’s.

      • WillIEverSeeACupInMyLife? - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:24 AM

What did he accomplish? He was an assistant GM who was in the right place at the right place and won a Stanley Cup as an ASSISTANT GM sort of like Ruben Amaro was an assistant GM in 2008 when the Phillies won the world series. Remind me again how Amaro is doing now?

      • philafly - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:35 AM

Quote from Jack Ferreira, assistant to Kings GM Dean Lombardi: “I’ve been in this business a long time, and there isn’t anyone that I have worked with that is more prepared to run a franchise than Ron Hextall…There isn’t a phase of this game that he doesn’t work at. Anything he felt that the Kings lacked in, his work ethic was such that he just attacked that area. His work ethic is unsurpassed.

“He was involved in everything. Long-range planning, contracts, negotiations, minor league. The only thing he was not directly involved in was the amateur draft. He was Dean’s right-hand man.”

Find someone talk about Holmgren that way. And Amaro sucks.

      • WillIEverSeeACupInMyLife? - Nov 8, 2013 at 12:00 PM

“When the best player in the world comes up to you and tells you, ‘I don’t know who you’re planning on starting tonight, but I want that first shift’, that says everything you need to know about Claude Giroux right there.” —-Not all quotes make perfect sense buddy.

      • philafly - Nov 8, 2013 at 12:07 PM

That quote was from Laviolette, Giroux’s head coach at the time. Laviolette was obviously biased when making that quote. Most people here know Giroux is not, and wasn’t at the time, the best player in the world. But like I said, Laviolette was biased and was probably amped up after Giroux came through in a major way on that first shift.

Ferreira’s quote talks about what Hextall actually did in his role. The job functions he actually performed. You wanted to know what Hextall did as Assistant G.M.? There is your answer. Ferreira’s quote came after Hextall had left. There was no incentive to praise him the way Ferreira did. But he still did…buddy.

      • 950003cups - Nov 8, 2013 at 12:38 PM

That has to be rock bottom for the Devils. If we beat a team, everyone’s job is on the line? Are we that easy to play against?

      • flyersfan85 - Nov 8, 2013 at 1:18 PM

        @ c9castine…

Ok sport, don’t know who you support but im sure they are all sunshine and my little ponies, right?

Most of the fans..who come here, that is, understand that we dont run the team as you imply we do..most of us older fans realize that continuously hiring people inside the organization that arent named (Renburg, Leclair, Desjardins, Hatcher, or Brind’amour ((man I miss his name called in the EA NHL series))) or someone that was beneficial to the Flyers is detrimental to moving forward.

Im not going to talk bad about most of the Flyers team..as most of them are skilled..some very..but they lack the cohesion and leadership needed for a good team..

Step 1. Remove the C from G..not strip..remove and give it to Vinny. Classy move to Vinny and saves G the (The Philly C curse, now we can see who are real Phhily fans with that) probs and give them to Vinny who can handle pressure (notice Danny B used to make most of the team statments).

Step 2. Trade Hartnell and Mesz for whatever they reap. Neither of them have quality any longer…put Simmer on top left, with G and Vorachek, bring up Mcginn, 2nd line of..Schenn, Vinny, Read. Yes Gus has had it rough but bring him up and play him.

At this point its about netting Eklund, getting exp for some of our younger guys..we cant get Laughton back..can we?

Yes my response has tons of issues..oh..and fire Holmgren..

      • c9castine - Nov 9, 2013 at 12:42 AM

flyersfan85 – I’m from pittsburgh. so yep, all sunshine and ponies here. i didn’t want to rub it in on this page though, because i know how hated Pens fans are around the league (we are spoiled, its cool, ill admit it, don’t blame you guys sometimes)

philafly – like i said I’m from pittsburgh. so no i don’t know how you guys are reacting other than the BS that goes on PHT, with flyers fans like broadstreetbullies denying how bad it is and telling pens fans how bad we suck until the bitter end. i guess i have some small measure of respect for that.

however, this whole rivalry thing is a whole lot more fun when you guys don’t suck nuts, as much as i hate to say it. and as filthy dirty as you guys are, i can’t deny you love hockey like we do, and you deserve better.

so like i said, start screaming for it, keep screaming for it, and i do believe you’ll eventually get it. too big of a market too big of a hockey culture and too much money for mr. ed to ignore it all. i hate to sound like a homer but if i was ed snider id be looking at Jason Botterill who is the Pens assistant GM. he’s never gonna have the top job here, but not because he isn’t good. Botterill is known more as a “salary cap specialist” than the assistant GM and is pretty much the reason why the Penguins field ridiculous rosters year after year and always have the money to do it. while everybody around the league is on PHT saying “yeah, well, they won’t be able to keep them all together much longer” since 2006, he is in his office with a calculator, pushing up his glasses on the bridge of his nose and saying “yep, we can do that, now and 5 years down the road’.

      • kastout11 - Nov 12, 2013 at 10:14 AM

I agree with everything you said, except that Giroux has not done anything to deserve the “C”. He is surrounded by a bunch of 2nd and 3rd line, middle of the road players. Although struggling, he is unquestionably the best player on the team, and has been for the since Pronger was hurt and Holmgren traded away Richards and Carter. I certainly agree with Berube not being an NHL ready head coach. Even though, I agree with the Laviolette firing, I think the team looks as bad, if not worse, than they did when Laviolette was the head coach. I am also tired or hearing that they will start scoring, they are too good not to. I am not so sure about that. Giroux finally got his first this weekend, maybe this will kickstart their offense.

    • myz43 - Nov 8, 2013 at 8:09 AM

Just because you wear a “C” on your jersey means you are a leader! If this is “his” team, why is no one following his lead? ( that’s right, they are…..by not scoring and being a defensive liability)…Maybe he’s being hazed?

      • flyersfan85 - Nov 8, 2013 at 1:27 PM

        Brilliant..no really..

      • babykaby - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:49 PM

There is more than one leader on every hockey team. Everyone can put all the blame on CG for the situation in Philly, but where is the rest of the team. They are ALL being paid to do the job, yet none of them are showing up. One player does not make a team, and when that one player is not producing some of the other players should earn their money and step up. Apparently the spark that was lit the other night against DC wasn’t a spark afterall. Stop all the bs and just play the damn game.

    • philafly - Nov 8, 2013 at 12:06 PM

That quote was from Laviolette, Giroux’s head coach at the time. Laviolette was obviously biased when making that quote. Oops, meant to post this above.

The old long team meeting trick get gone !

  3. whiskytango333 - Nov 7, 2013 at 10:39 PM

    0 for 8.275 million

  4. thoughtart - Nov 7, 2013 at 10:40 PM

All they need is another brawl, and they’ll be fine . . . right?

  5. pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 7, 2013 at 10:41 PM

I can’t wait to hear what expert insight and knowledge will come from IBIEINIID about tonight’s lackluster performance by his Flyers. I truly believe they should fire Sam Carchidi and have IBIEINIID become their new beat writer. He’s AWESOME!!!

    • ibieiniid - Nov 8, 2013 at 10:59 AM

unlike every Penguin fan on PHT, I don’t have to point out every time we lose. I said it before and I’ll say it again, Giroux lies at the vertex of this team’s on-ice problems, and until he turns it on, it’ll be more of the same. there’s no need for me to reiterate that every two days. the only reason I still comment on Flyers articles is to troll the trolls. I don’t know if you noticed, but I comment on just about every team’s articles, not just the Flyers. Hockey fan first, Flyers fan second is what I’ve always lived by.

      • flyersfan85 - Nov 8, 2013 at 1:45 PM

I got ya man. I will help bear the burden. We will endure like the Pens fans did from 01 to 05…and wait until the Pens fail in the Playoffs which theynmore then likely will..and all the Pens fans will say..”well at least we made it”, “1975”, “and or make a derogatory comment about G, or sexuality related comment about their own Captain”..its just what they do….

Unfortunately, we (Flyers fans) allowed, and cause this, because of our exception playoffs record, history of fear-evoking play, and inability for Bobby C (which every hockey fan should adore based on the Summit Series..) to relinquish his “Frankenstein vs. Skilled Speedster” ideal.

It is what it is.. but fyi..if any Philly fans play NHL 2014..try these trades.

At the 2013 draft trade a. Meszaros, 2013 draft pick (11), 2013 5th pick, 2013 6th pick, to Colorado for the #1… it nets you McKinnon.

        Then..

        Trade Hartnell, 2014 1sr rnd, 2014 5th round, 2013 6th rnd, to Tampa and grab Jones..and a 3RD…awesome…eh?

      • cofran2004 - Nov 8, 2013 at 1:46 PM

You know, I really respect that. You could have been an absolute jerk to that tool of a pens fan, but you barely took a shot at him (and in doing so, made him look even more like a raving idiot).

        Kudos to you sir.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 8, 2013 at 1:54 PM

        thanks guys.

flyersfan85: I couldn’t bring myself to buy that game. It was almost the exact same as NHL 13. I had 12, def was buying 13, but 14 didn’t show me enough from the demo. Hell, the menus and cut scenes were almost exactly the same. What I AM finding though is that the online players in NHL 13 are far better now that most people aren’t playing it. THEY ACTUALLY PASS NOW!

and cofran2004: lol don’t let me fool you, I normally AM a complete jerk to that guy. he posts on literally every Flyers article with some stupid, pointless, informationless trolling. Ref: the next two Flyers articles after this one. I’ve given up. these children just thumb down facts (I simply posted the list of NTC/NMCs on the Eberle article, got thumb downed for it) and spew a whole lot of worthless sh** out of their fingers, I’m about done with it. there’s people like steelpensbucs that actually gives real, respectful input into the conversation… then there’s this guy. but w/e, the internet is the internet.

  6. tru2joelu4eva - Nov 7, 2013 at 10:41 PM

is giroux as good as crosby yet?

    • pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:06 PM

Only if it’s in a video game and they can edited his attributes but since it’s real life…the answer is simple, He Never Was and Most Importantly NEVER will be unless for example your an idiot Flyers fan who has his or hers blinders on.

      • flyersfan85 - Nov 8, 2013 at 1:48 PM

Nice electronic handjob..you guys a D tandom for some local pickup team?

    • buggerianpaisley - Nov 8, 2013 at 1:30 AM

Giroux won’t improve until he comes back here in another uniform. One thing is for sure, Freddy the Fog’s son won’t be interested in him.

  7. elmerbrownelmerbrown - Nov 7, 2013 at 10:46 PM

Martin Brodeur has been beating the flyers 3-0 for twenty years I don’t even watch anymore !

  8. buysamadrink - Nov 7, 2013 at 10:49 PM

Guessing it went something like this…”Come on guys. Only 6 penalty minutes??? Where’s the goontastic effort we saw the other night??? Ragin’ Ray can’t do it all by himself!”

  9. jimw81 - Nov 7, 2013 at 10:51 PM

take the c off of Giroux’s jersey. he’s not a leader, he’s just one of the spiloed players in that locker rtoom.

    • ntvd7 - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:33 PM

I won’t go THAT far but he doesn’t seem to be responding very well….

Take the “C” off and see where it goes, he’s been awful

      • joey4id - Nov 8, 2013 at 8:28 AM

Take the C off the guy to whom you just gave a 10 mil per year contract is admitting to the hockey world that the owner is an idiot. Won’t happen. BTW, I’m not saying he’s not, he just won’t admit it.

  10. billsboy88 - Nov 7, 2013 at 10:53 PM

remember when there were those that tried to convince the rest of us that Giroux was the best player in the NHL?

  11. blackandorangeforlife - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:04 PM

Geez i see hate runs deep…All trash with no good words written!

    • jalumbo - Nov 8, 2013 at 8:53 AM

Here are some good words. Giroux blows. Hartnell is no longer a threat and the trades the Flyers made all sucked. How is JVR doing? I think much better than Schenn. Giroux? Deryk Engelleand, an adequate defenceman, playing wing, has as many goals as Giroux, Berube? He really made a difference. Downie? He now has a face valley thanks to his fighting skills. Should we really go on? I love watching Coatsie make excuses for them. Flyers never get penalties, the refs always make mistakes. The suck so bad, their own season ticket holders boo them the entire game. Carter? Richards? wow. They decimated a team that went to the finals a couple of years ago. Because Pronger didn’t think they were worthy of his locker room. How is he doing by the way? He can still play. Just change the name on the back to CYCLOPS!!!!

      • steelpenbucs87 - Nov 8, 2013 at 9:35 AM

Engo actually has two more than Giroux, but that’s neither here nor there. Also he is NOT an adequate defenseman haha. He’s in the 40th percentile at best.

      • whammy71 - Nov 8, 2013 at 10:21 AM

And the only reason Engo is playing wing is in an attempt to get him some PT – in an effort to trade him. Heck – he may even sick as a 4th line winger.

        Enjoy your crappy season!!!

    • steelpenbucs87 - Nov 8, 2013 at 9:45 AM

Here’s some good words for ya:

The Flyers are an absolute mess, but all hope should not be lost yet. The irony here is that the Flyers are actually getting production at the spot that has been their Achilles heel through out the past few years (in goal). I see a lot of people saying that they need to take away the C from Giroux, but I think that would only exacerbate his issues. Instead what they need to do is just have a sit down wherein defined roles on the team are divvied up (and maybe they did this last night). Giroux is the captain, but only in a “lead by example” kind of way. Lecavalier, Hartnell, and Timmonen need to step up and be the vocal leaders of the team. When Schenn takes a stupid penalty in the offensive zone, it should be Vinny who’s smacking him up side the head. When Coburn picks a bad time to pinch, Kimo should be standing over him during intermission.

There’s still some talent on this team – at least to be a .500 hockey team, and frankly I kind of want you guys to get there because this rivalry is no fun when you guys blow.

  12. philafly - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:06 PM

Literally all troll posts. You guys need to get out more.

    • c9castine - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:28 PM

no comment on the article, but one aimed at insulting everybody else? isn’t that the definition of this internet term trolling?

      just feed the beast.

      • philafly - Nov 8, 2013 at 8:35 AM

If you get insulted by me saying that internet trolls need to get out more, then I don’t know what to tell you.

You criticize me for commenting on the fact that almost every post was aimed at trashing the Flyers, yet you do not say a word about the all the troll posts? It’s a shame since you actually had an enlightened post earlier.

    • hockeyflow33 - Nov 8, 2013 at 1:43 AM

      For a Flyers article? I haven’t seen one I’d deem troll-worthy yet.

    • jalumbo - Nov 8, 2013 at 8:54 AM

philafly, if your mom sucked as much as the Flyers do, you would be twins.

      • philafly - Nov 8, 2013 at 9:21 AM

That makes zero sense. Didn’t quite make it to 5th grade biology did you?

      • flyersfan85 - Nov 8, 2013 at 1:51 PM

Yeah..because thats the way fertilization happens, eh killer? Or..were you just basing that on your moms popular calling card…

Sorry..really mom jokes are usually 5th grade..but that was like a Leighton rebound..hadda get that one.

    • whammy71 - Nov 8, 2013 at 10:22 AM

well – Philly fans are generally considered the biggest d-bags across the land. Reap what you sow.

      Enjoy your crappy season!!!!

      • ibieiniid - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:06 AM

generally…. but the PHT ones are pretty calm. it’s you Penguins fans on here that start sh** every day. nobody’s sowing anything except you guys.

      • cofran2004 - Nov 8, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Truthfully, I’d prefer to deal with philly fans than pittsburgh fans. NONE of you seem to know the team existed before the 2005 entry draft. I’d rather deal with die-hard baffoonary than fair-weather fans anyday.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 8, 2013 at 2:23 PM

        lol that’s fair.

    • ibieiniid - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:05 AM

I find it ridiculous that there’s more Penguins fans on here thumbing us down than Flyers fans thumbing us up. But like Halford (I think) said the other day in the chip and chase, they get mega clicks for stories about bad teams. So expect them to post away about a few specific teams, Flyers included.

Also, like c9 above, what does he expect us to say? If we say something positive, we get chastised. If we say something negative, 10 other people on the same post are doing the same thing. idgi

  13. jovocop2112 - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:19 PM

Throwing it out there….as far as this season is concerned so far, Mike Santorelli is a better center then Claude Giroux….and Generallisimo Francisco Franco is still dead

    • cantstandstupid - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:49 AM

Giroux is terrible at faceoffs. He just goes through the motions and doesn’t give much effort. The wingers don’t help out much either since they don’t crash into the circle to fight for loose pucks. I guess no Flyer is actually fighting for loose pucks nowadays.

  14. crazemastercraze - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:21 PM

Flyers fans deserve this. They constantly boast of a past teams accomplishments as if it’s some sort of prophecy bestowed upon every team since 1975 that greatness in black and orange is the law of the land. Now they can just sit there with a coke and a smile and shut the Eff up.

    • cantstandstupid - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:37 AM

Don’t most sport fans have the delusion that their team is the best. Isn’t that a main reason for you being a fan of that team? Having that little hope your team can go all the way. Unless you are just a bandwagon jumper. All fans act the same, but seems like you are a typical small minded douche that just wants to bash Flyers fans.

  15. crazemastercraze - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:27 PM

And can we please just admit that Schneider/Holmgram are the worst owner/GM tandem in the NHL. They are a joke.

    • flyersfan85 - Nov 8, 2013 at 1:56 PM

Your knowledge of the management…epic…seriously..you have it down..

Mathieu Schneider and some meth dealer named Holmgram..spot on..

I know this makes me almost a grammar Nazi..but jesus, both names.

  16. bobhpine - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:50 PM

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA….ha….hahaha….

Remember that time the flyers beat the pens in the playoffs?? Hang onto it fellas. That’s all you’re gonna have for awhile…but let’s face it you’re used to it (it being LOSING) #1975

    • cantstandstupid - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:42 AM

      HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Remember that time the Penguins were so terrible and no fans would watch their games and they almost went bankrupt until Super Mario came to the rescue. That was fantastic!

So I guess the Flyers are going to try that plan. Play really bad, lose the fan base, almost declare bankruptcy and get saved by….Bernie Parent? Maybe not the same as Mario, but he’s a great guy to be around.

Giroux needs to be a leader he is the captain right? He has a C on his jersey right? Giroux should not be the captain of the Flyers. What captain doesn’t do a post game Interview? Do you see Crosby, Ovi, or Toews skip a post game interview when things are going bad? The answer is NO. Giroux needs to be the spokesperson of the team and take blame for the teams failings. Giroux obviously is not a leader.

    • pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:57 PM

Look at Tavares from the other night when the Caps spanked them. He wasn’t too happy about it and he made it known.

  18. bobhpine - Nov 8, 2013 at 12:04 AM

Need to get out more? It’s 11:45 on a Thursday. Those of us with jobs don’t go out at such times. This time of the week/night is actually perfect for checking scores and dropping a line or two about everyone’s favorite band of hateable losers after ANOTHER loss.

Almost 20% of the season is gone and no goals from your captain…and three wins…but remember what Snider said…the approach and the process don’t need to be changed. So by all means, give away character guys, heart and soul players like Talbot who would do anything to win, give away him for a back jumping stooge underachiever like steve Downie.

Pat yourselves on the back for giving ray emery a third star in a 7-0 rout for acting like a thug. Give the C to da best player in the worl Claude Giroux. #Hartnelldown is so cute. Hey what happened to all that “jam”, remember the “jam?”

It’s a whole culture of BS that merely obscures the fact that the Flyers NEVER WIN THE CUP. Since the fan base is stupid, they’re distracted by these things. But just know, we are all laughing at you.

    • philafly - Nov 8, 2013 at 8:40 AM

Read my earlier comment you moron. No one here agrees with Snider. I’m sure you got home from second shift at the steel mill and jerked off into your Terrible Towel when you saw the Flyers lost.

  19. stakex - Nov 8, 2013 at 12:38 AM

As much as I enjoy watching the Flyers struggle, this is almost too painful to watch. I don’t think anyone that wasn’t a Flyers fan expected them to be good this year, but they are ridiculously bad. Something has to give be it a management change, coaching change, or blowing up the entire team and rebuilding. In any case, expect big changes for the Flyers coming in the near future.

  20. President Charles Logan - Nov 8, 2013 at 2:53 AM

But yet trading Carter and Richards was such a good move and they got so much “talent” in return. (note sarcasm)

Thats when the true issues began with this team. and dont blame it on Pronger’s injury.. he was already in the twilight of his career when he had to call it quits

    • ericcoyle15 - Nov 8, 2013 at 10:42 AM

yes it was a great idea, both of them were problems in the locker room and dont give me that crap about them winning a cup in LA ya look at that team or better yet look at that goaltender, we got a lot back for richards and carter, there is such a thing as an “off year” cause any REAL hockey fan would know that these players dont suck, simmonds, voracek, giroux, schenn, couts, harrtnell, read any hockey fan knows what those players can do when their A games are on any idiot can look at a record 15 games into a season and say the team sucks, have they played bad absolutely, do they have time to turn it around most definitely, but saying a team will play better once they fire their GM is complete stupidity

      • President Charles Logan - Nov 8, 2013 at 6:03 PM

funny, i never once suggested that your GM should get fired.. he’s made some good moves as well as some foolish ones…. and i’ll insist that the carter richards move was not a good one to make for what you got in return. but hey keep drinking the orange crush kool aid , i heard if you buy 12 packets of it you get a free pair of orange shaded rose colored glasses as well

    • blackandorangeforlife - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:23 AM

Richards has 4 goals and a minus 3….He is now on the Kings 3rd line….Carter has 5 goals and a soft cast on his foot yet again (the very reason the Flyers traded him)……how would they be helping the Flyers?….The roster would be even worse if the Flyers still had those cap hits
Sorry but those trades are not the reason the Flyers are lost right now!

      • President Charles Logan - Nov 8, 2013 at 6:01 PM

it was the beginning of the end. they are still clearly better players then what you got in return .

      • blackandorangeforlife - Nov 8, 2013 at 6:41 PM

I think the beginning of the end was the last time in the Finals……Yes they caught lightning in a bottle but any Flyer fan will tell you it was not a great season that led them to it……Quite ugly actually……Click the link scroll down and click opponent (it will all team games together)……..Seem like a contending team?

come on flyers, bring it on back…we miss you

was a time every flyers’ game was a must watch whether you liked them or not

can’t see holmgren lasting until christmas, what a calamitous bungler

how good was laviolette…i think we know

  22. ejdowskijohnny99 - Nov 8, 2013 at 3:45 AM

Well I enjoy it and god I love seeing these bums stink the way they do…ha that Giroux better than Crosby remark, what a joke, great to see the phillies also stinking right with the cryers, hope they never win another game.

  23. theageofquarrel - Nov 8, 2013 at 6:43 AM

    HA!!!

  24. joey4id - Nov 8, 2013 at 8:43 AM

Are there still believers out there? Flyers will have to go 36 – 22 – 9 to come close to a wild card spot. It will take a freaken miracle for this to happen. Question is, do you hit the reset button? Is so, when? You owe it to the season ticket holders to put a quality product on the ice. It wouldn’t surprise me to hear that Berube was thrown under the bus by the players during the meeting. Not saying it’s deserving, but if the players are not responding to a coaching change, then you question 2 things; was it the right coach? Are 20 players performing so poorly that their not deserving of playing in the NHL? I’m guessing Giroux came out of there with a lot of info that needs to be brought to management, which could be why he preferred to avoid the press. The next 24 hours could be very interesting.

    • dirt2013 - Nov 8, 2013 at 10:28 AM

It’s hard to just hit the reset button with so many NTC in the contracts.

      • devilsarethebest - Nov 8, 2013 at 10:36 AM

I don’t have a doubt most would waive them.

      • blackandorangeforlife - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:30 AM

There are only 2 that are a problem….Timmo is in his last year…..And Coburn who should have been a buyout…..Hartnell, Simmonds,Grossman, and Schenn are not that bad and wont be going anyway….So the NTC is not really an issue!

    • ibieiniid - Nov 8, 2013 at 12:30 PM

I think that record might be just a BIT high for what the Metro division is doing. 8 points out of a wildcard spot, 7 points out of a division spot, that should at least paint part of the picture. We’ve seen bad starts before. They’ve come back before, but they’re showing nothing that makes me think they can do it this year, clearly.

      • joey4id - Nov 8, 2013 at 2:19 PM

That is actually a conservative record. You need at least 90 points to hope making the playoffs. Going 36 22 9 will give them exactly 90 pts. 40 32 10. And that doesn’t guarantee they make the playoffs. Go back and look at the passed seasons.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 8, 2013 at 2:22 PM

the Rangers right now are on an 82 point pace, and sitting in the 3rd division spot in the Metro. I agree it will be tough, but the format changes this all around a bit. not to mention, the West hasn’t dominated the East so horribly in most past seasons.

  25. stepanup - Nov 8, 2013 at 8:51 AM

In terms of Giroux leaving without speaking to the media, is that really a bad thing? Players generally want to keep those conversations in-house, and it’s hard to think of instances where going public with criticism is beneficial. I suppose he could have answered every question with a ‘No Comment,’ but then he’d be criticized for wasting everyone’s time. So, it’s a lose-lose for him until he picks his play up.

As for the rest of this thread, it’s amazing how good the Penguins fan’s memories are, they can recall every (post-Crosby) instance of the Flyers being arrogant. Such great fans.

Is it me, or is Claude Giroux the biggest baby in the NHL right now?

  27. joewilliesshnoz - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Poor Philly fans. You can take solice knowing that it’s just a matter of time before Fleury cracks, for Pgh.

  28. cantstandstupid - Nov 8, 2013 at 11:44 AM

My friend just told me the Flyers have a 1pm press conference scheduled. I think Berube is going to step down. Does anyone have an idea what it could be about?

    • blackandorangeforlife - Nov 8, 2013 at 12:04 PM

Nothing on CSN Philly about it!

      • cantstandstupid - Nov 8, 2013 at 12:46 PM

Damn! I was really hoping to hear something positive happening after last night’s game.

  29. Jay - Nov 8, 2013 at 8:11 PM

Ok there is a lot of people here commenting on Laviolette’s quote about Giroux. It was a bold statement coming from someone who has actually seen the things that Giroux has done.

Giroux is a great hockey player going through a bad slump with a bunch of teammates who were overrated then overpaid. I can backup Laviolette’s comments because I watched every game in the last four years. I have seen Giroux do amazing things and make incredible plays. Mind you, a lot of that was inspired by having Jaromir Jagr on the team. Those guys loved Jagr. The biggest mistake Holmgren made was not signing Jagr to a long term deal. Jagr made Giroux a better player.

But one thing you guys are missing is that Giroux is a very intelligent player. He’s very gifted if he’s not still harboring some injury with his wrists that’s not being reported on.

It is now harder for him to score because he is being targeted by teams since everyone knows he’s an offensive threat.

Here is a play I remember:

Giroux noticed in practice that the opposing team boards had bounce to them when hit with the puck. He made a plan to use this to his advantage during the game.

Giroux, skating towards two or three opponents in the opposing zone, then passed the puck to himself by slapping it off the boards behind the goalie. The opposition were psyched out thinking it was a dump, instead it was actually a pass to himself. After bouncing off the boards, the puck came back to him where he was wide open in front of the net, then he beat the goalie with a great goal.

The guy is well above just being a good player. The year he got 90 some points, he absolutely was one of the greatest players. I saw it!

What I don’t agree with is the decision to make him the captain so early in his career. It’s too much pressure for him. After being made the captain, he hasn’t been the same player. I think he’s stressed out. They need to bring someone else in to help him. They should even trade to get Jagr back. Last night I saw Jagr out skating everyone on the ice. It was incredible. He’s still got it.

Thanks for this segment of “Jay’s Fairy Tales”. Nice story and nice dreaming, but it looks like the 3 gingers are a bit overrated aren’t they?
