Pens sign enforcer Letourneau-Leblond to two-year deal

The Pittsburgh Penguins raised some eyebrows on Thursday, signing noted pugilist Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond to a two year deal.

It’s a two-way deal worth $550,000 at the NHL level, and runs through the 2014-15 campaign.

Letourneau-Leblond, 28, has been with Pittsburgh’s AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, notching one assist and 42 PIM in 11 games.

As mentioned above, “PL3″ made his mark in professional hockey with his fists. He fought a staggering 48 times in the AHL from 2010-12 and, while he’s only appeared in 40 NHL contests, has still managed to rack up over 100 penalty minutes.

Letourneau-Leblond is best known for this lengthy fight vs. fellow tough guy Cam Janssen in 2010:

“We both connected with a couple and I think I’m deaf in my left ear now,” Janssen said afterward. “But that’s the way it is. The boys’ said my lips were blue when I went to the penalty box, but that’s the way we do it and it was fun.

“We’re both warriors going at it and we love it.”

It’s worth noting the Pens haven’t had any issues dropping the gloves this year — as a team, they’ve already fought 10 times in 16 games with Tanner Glass leading the way with three scraps.

Remonds me of Doug Wilson with signing Brown. The same question i have with this is why?

    • steelpenbucs87 - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:11 PM

Reasoning is pretty simple – they want to have a banger in the minors available in case they need him. I wouldn’t expect him up unless you see Glass and/or Engelland moved/hurt. He’s the new Stevey Mac.

  3. curioustraveler13 - Nov 7, 2013 at 11:56 AM

Maybe they are anticipating the flyers start emery in net next Wednesday.

    • ibieiniid - Nov 7, 2013 at 12:19 PM

even on Pens articles, you’re trolling the Flyers. you’re pathetic.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 7, 2013 at 12:22 PM

It was a joke man. Ease up. I haven’t been commenting on the flyers latest articles making fun of how bad they are. When i see an opportunity for a good joke i take it. Don’t blame me because the flyers provide some good material.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 7, 2013 at 12:24 PM

oh ok, because you’re normally not telling jokes. you’re normally bashing. so forgive me if I didn’t pick up on your humor this time around.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 7, 2013 at 12:25 PM

        You are forgiven.

      • 19to77 - Nov 7, 2013 at 6:22 PM

Shhh. It’s okay, ibieniid. Maybe Claude Giroux will score a goal tonight.

“Maybe they are anticipating the flyers start emery in net next Wednesday”

      Slow clap, well done :)

    • blackandorangeforlife - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:31 PM

Or they could be expecting Sid to do something dumb and need someone to fight for him!

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:35 PM

Crosby has more fights then giroux, but its ok giroux has more diving penalties then crosby!

      • blackandorangeforlife - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:40 PM

But has Giroux ever been responsible for his teammates getting suspend defending him because he lost his cool?

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:46 PM

Hey when you r the best player in the world teammates tend to protect you. Sorry giroux doesn’t get to experience that. Maybe if he scored A goal.

      • blackandorangeforlife - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:54 PM

It’s also the reason a lot of fans hate Sid…..They watch him go off the deep end and skate away leaving someone else to clean up his mess….It’s all good as we have seen in the last few playoffs Sid gets frustrated and drags his team to imploding exits. say no all you want but it is a fact!

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 7, 2013 at 2:01 PM

Last year he faced chara head on. No one intervened. Giroux on the other hand, o wait he was on the golf course. Great leadership from that one. Did you see giroux defend Jordan staal in the canes game? What a captain.

      • blackandorangeforlife - Nov 7, 2013 at 2:43 PM

He faced Chara head on?…..LOL….Is that why Sids agent released that edited video that left everything out except the punch in the face?….And Giroux wasn’t on the course yet……He was at Rexys watching the Pens get Owned and exposed yet again……

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 7, 2013 at 3:05 PM

Good thing he wasn’t on the golf course. Wouldn’t want him on the IR. The flyers would miss all 6 of those assists.

    • WillIEverSeeACupInMyLife? - Nov 7, 2013 at 8:07 PM

It’s ashame the same Flyers fans commenting on PHT (see below) make Philadelphia look so stupid….this coming from a Flyers fan.

  4. 7mantel - Nov 7, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Maybe there’s a trade in the works ! Glass might be moving ! Just a thought .

    • runhigh24 - Nov 7, 2013 at 12:21 PM

Why? Glass has 5 points in 16 games. He ain’t going anywhere.

  5. ibieiniid - Nov 7, 2013 at 12:17 PM

Hey Whammy, no comment on this one? you were REAL quick to post on the Shelley article about there being a guy that was once a Flyer making his living as a fighter. I’d think you might say the same here. TWO DESIGNATED FIGHTERS!? you’ve got more than the Flyers do!

    • whammy71 - Nov 7, 2013 at 12:23 PM

Let me eat some lunch you loser! Plus its already been stated – Pens need to sign a goon cause Filthy is coming up on the schedule next week.

And sorry tool-bag….he is the only real fighter on the Pens.

      Enjoy your crappy season!

      • ibieiniid - Nov 7, 2013 at 12:28 PM

the only real fighter on the Pens… yet you have two guys that have as many or more than Simmonds, the Flyers top fighter this year. Hell, you’ve got three guys that have as many or more than Rinaldo.

by the way, I’m not saying amount of fights are a bad thing, but when whammy felt the need to imply that exact thing on the Flyers article, he kinda opened the door.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 7, 2013 at 12:38 PM

correction, you’ve got one guy that has as many as Simmonds, plus P.L. L-L. and two on the 2nd part.

  6. runhigh24 - Nov 7, 2013 at 12:17 PM

the Pens lost Steve Macintyre on waivers in October to the Oilers so it’s just a depth move to have an enforcer in the system. Nothing earth shattering.

  7. c1md6 - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:17 PM

Hahahahaha with all these pens “fans” (we all know that they were extinct pre Crosby error but now all of a sudden everyone’s a diehard) pounding their chest because they’re off to a good start in November, only sets up great comedy in the playoffs with their epic collapse.

    • curioustraveler13 - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:21 PM

That is why we are enjoying are comedy at the expense of flyers now, because they can’t even make the playoffs. hahahaha 39 years.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:30 PM

maybe the flyers need to have a LOOOOONG stretch of being absolutely terrible, almost going bankrupt, having 0 fans, and getting some high draft picks. that should turn this franchise around!

      • ibieiniid - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:31 PM

excuse me. GOING bankrupt, and almost moving locations to hockey-mecca KANSAS OF ALL PLACES*

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:34 PM

Wouldn’t work. Although you seem to be trending toward that plan, your draft picks stink, and if they don’t you just trade them for healthy scratches anyways.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:39 PM

good thing we’ll never have to see it. Flyers have never missed the playoffs in more than 5 straight seasons. Hey, another feat the Penguins were able to pull off!

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:44 PM

Haha just like giroux goalless streak. Give it time. Looks like 2 straight so far. 2 down 3 to go.

      • killerpgh - Nov 7, 2013 at 2:10 PM

“good thing we’ll never have to see it. Flyers have never missed the playoffs in more than 5 straight seasons. Hey, another feat the Penguins were able to pull off!”

Wow. So the Flyers missed the playoffs 5 straight years once and the Penguins missed the playoffs 6 straight years once. Is you’re life that sad that you’re bragging about that? How about this stat. Since the leveling of the playing field between Big Market/Small Market teams (Salary Cap) the Flyers have missed the playoffs 2 times (and looking like a 3rd this year) and the Penguins once.

  8. killerpgh - Nov 7, 2013 at 1:58 PM

The scary part is he might be in the lineup for the next game. The Penguins are loaded with depth on defense. They don’t have much depth in the AHL at forward. With injuries to Neal, Bennett, Dupuis (maybe), Kobasew and D’Agostini the Pens are already using a d-man as a winger. PL3 probably still falls behind trash like Zolnierczyk and Conner to getting called up, but the lack of forward depth in the AHL is alarming for the future. Realistically it should be a huge concern currently since most times you aren’t going to be down 4/5 wingers out of your top 6 winger. But now the Penguins might be.

    • dirt2013 - Nov 7, 2013 at 3:37 PM

How many top scoring wingers should they have at WBS ? When healthy ( maybe if is a better word) they have no need for a top 6 wing. Most of their top picks ,with the exception of Bennett, in recent years have been on defense. If the Pens know what they are doing they should be fine.

  9. pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 7, 2013 at 3:24 PM

LOL at all of the Flyers toolbags on here!

    • ibieiniid - Nov 7, 2013 at 4:15 PM

hmmmm…. Kinda reminds me of a certain other team’s toolbags on ALL the Flyers articles. I wonder who I might be talking about…………….

      • ibieiniid - Nov 7, 2013 at 4:49 PM

yeah thumbs down that all you want to, but Flyers fans have been leaving you guys alone since the sweep. you’re the ones coming to the Flyers stories and bashing the f out of them. every…. single….. one of them.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 7, 2013 at 4:50 PM

        Flyers fans on PHT*

i can’t vouch for Pennsylvania morons outside of PHT.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 7, 2013 at 4:55 PM

“Flyer fans have been leaving you guys alone since the sweep”. Translation we realized our team is so bad that we have to actively root for whoever the pens are playing, and even that got tiring.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 7, 2013 at 5:40 PM

You know I never once had an issue with you until now. …And I guess you consider all Pennsylvanians like myself and you all morons? Am I correct? If not please explain…enlighten me with your superior knowledge and inside, thanks.
