Contract talks between defenseman P.K. Subban and the Montreal Canadiens are planned to begin in two weeks, according to Louis Jean.

Subban, 24, is in the final year of his current two-year contract with the Habs, worth a cap hit of $2.875 million per season. He currently sits with 15 points in 16 regular season games.

That puts him second among defenseman in scoring, only two points behind Erik Karlsson from the Ottawa Senators.

It’s a could bet that Subban, based on his numbers alone, could be in for a substantial raise this time around. Consider that Karlsson’s current contract – seven years – is worth $45.5 million and has an annual cap hit of $6.5 million.

Whats the going rate of pay for a former Norris trophy winner that won’t crack Team Canada’s line up?

Man, I was hoping ex- Dallas GM Niewendyk made a offer to the Habs back when disgruntled rumors were flying. The Stars, like many, many teams could use P.K. Habs will have to pay him 8 years 56 million now.

Why a 24 year old like Subban would want a 7 or 8 year contract is a mystery to me. Under this CBA, the money available for contracts, barring some calamity, will go up consistently from this point. If he gets a long term deal at 6.5 or 7 million, half way through he could very well be complaining he is underpaid.

He is eligible for UFA in 2 years so Montreal will want longer term than that, understandably. If I was him I would be asking for a 4 year term. Ask for $8 million since its a shorter term, settle for $7 million.

Montreal can’t REALLY grind him like they did last time. If they do, he just goes to arbitration the next two years, and then he walks. And the Montreal organization will make sure this doesn’t happen and a deal gets done, regardless of what it costs them, and whatever the coach thinks of his play.
