Oilers coach calls Yakupov trade rumors ’100% not true’

Hey, remember yesterday when we passed along the trade rumor involving Oilers forward Nail Yakupov and the New York Rangers?

Yeah, that’s part of the reason Edmonton head coach Dallas Eakins had to have a chat with his young player today at practice.

“All these reports in the media about him being traded are absolutely 100% not true,” said Eakins, per the club’s Twitter account.

“He’s a young player and we’re not giving up on him.”

Yakupov, 20, only has one goal in 14 games this season. But it’s not just his early-season struggles that have caused the speculation surrounding the 2012 first overall pick. The Oilers (4-10-2) were supposed to make a push for the playoffs, and that seems like a pipe dream now.

There’s also the fact general manager Craig MacTavish promised to do “bold things” when he was hired last spring. Certainly, trading Yakupov would be bold. Problem is, it may also be really dumb.

They better trade him before he “retires” for the KHL.

Since when did Eakin’s become the GM of the Oilers?

All coaches are involved in trade talks with the GM nowadays. It’s not a one man show.

Naive move by Eakins. Looming trade possibilities might be the only way to motivate that kid. Just assuring that his poor play WON’T have consequences like a trade means he has no reason to work harder.

I mean, he might not care anyway. He doesn’t seem to want to try to learn a complete game at all. But just promising he won’t be traded removes a potential way to push him to perform.

As he gets traded to the rangers for Callahan, Del zatto and a 2nd…… < that was a joke.

He should be traded to the Flyers for Couture, Wayne Simmons and Sam Moran. Breath life into the Flyers and give Edmonton more toughness.

… right. Trade him to the Flyers. For Logan Couture.

The truly sad thing is, that’s probably still better than Craig MacTavish’s actual plan.

They should be considering a trade to help improve their team. The Oilers have some clear holes in their game and holding on to every young prospect isn’t doing them any good. Trading one valuable prospect would likely yield a valuable return in the areas the Oilers need the most. Not making a trade is just doing more of the same, and as the standings have shown, that isn’t working out very well.

Yeah. Good job PHT.. way to force Eakin’s hand..

Next thing you know GM’s will be calling NBC to get the real low down on what other GM’s are doing. You guys are like nostradamous..but for hockey..uncanny.
