Video: Canes’ Malhotra beats Flyers with OT stunner

Nov 5, 2013, 11:07 PM EDT

The Carolina Hurricanes made a potential steal by getting faceoff-winning machine Manny Malhotra off the free agent scrap heap, but they probably didn’t expect him to score goals like he did on Tuesday.

Malhotra made a great play to stun the Philadelphia Flyers with a 2-1 breakaway goal in OT:

That’s the first goal Malhotra, 33, has scored since March 26, 2012.

Painful game to watch but atleast Flyers lost. Mason looked very dejected in losing this one tho after playing solid for 59 minutes.

    • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 9:05 AM

OK kid. time to give mommy her tablet back and stop trying to analyze hockey. I’ll tell you the same thing i say to Gruden every week through my TV: making observations about the obvious is NOT analysis, it’s just a waste of words. oh, Mason lost his shutout and gave up 2 goals late to lose and he was dejected? who knew that would be the case? GREAT ANALYSIS!

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 6, 2013 at 10:11 AM

LOL! Well let’s hear your expert observations from this game. I’ll be waiting for a response…take your time man no rush.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 10:33 AM

i have a feeling that whatever I would say here, you’d call it obvious, because you tend to not give up on bashing Flyers and their fans. but protip: look around, I make my analyses pretty clear all over this site. but nah, you just see the handles of Flyers fans, don’t read what they say, thumbs down and move on, so you wouldn’t know how much personal analysis I give.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 6, 2013 at 11:26 AM

So I guess Penguin fans are the only ones who bash the Flyers and their fans…while the Flyer fans are saints? Am I correct? Last I checked both teams fanbases bash each other. You call me out for ripping Flyer fans but gee didn’t you, a Flyers fan, bash me, a Pens fan, with your original post? I thought Flyer fans didn’t do that!? Don’t go contradicting yourself! By the way I mostly use the mobile app…so I can’t really give a thumbs up or thumbs down most of time…unless I’m on the actual site like now.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 12:02 PM

i’m not talking about Penguins fans. I’m talking about YOU. You consistently bash Flyers posts and Flyers posters. nobody said the Flyers fans are saints, but we don’t show up in numbers on every Penguins article to give our 1 cent about a team we don’t know as much about. It seems like you aren’t a Penguins fan, but an anti-Flyers fan. you give no information, and just bash for the sake of bashing.

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 6, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Not a Pens fan? Funny how my whole room is mostly done in Penguins memorabilia. Nothing says I can’t leave my comment/opinion on an article about the Flyers, Pens, or not. Gee heres a suggestion for you; If don’t like what I say, then don’t respond to it. What’s so hard about that? Explain…please.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 1:06 PM

hm. kinda goes both ways now doesn’t it?

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 6, 2013 at 1:08 PM

        I never said it didn’t

    • laxman1944 - Nov 6, 2013 at 11:51 AM

You really “Get-off” cutting down The Flyers every single chance you get……is it a mission in life??

Please “Rulez” enlighten us all with your words of wisdom…….”Take your time man”

      • pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 6, 2013 at 1:07 PM

        LOL! That made me laugh

  2. Windmiller4 - Nov 5, 2013 at 11:20 PM

Its great to see Malhotra doing well after all he’s been through

    • DED - Nov 6, 2013 at 1:36 PM

Nothing against the Flyers, but that was great. He forced the turnover and scored a sweet goal. He doesn’t get many opportunities to be the hero.

  3. orangandblack - Nov 5, 2013 at 11:22 PM

It’s getting harder and harder to wear my orange and black proudly. Giroux is the softest thing since ice cream. Poor Mason.

    • steelpenbucs87 - Nov 6, 2013 at 11:00 AM

I was really impressed with Mason last night – seeing the puck well, good movement and rebound control. He seems to have found a nice home in Philly.

Giroux is mired in a slump to be certain, but it doesn’t seem like he’s getting much help out there. I wonder if there’s a significant shake-up in lines to be made to catch fire. Would they consider throwing Giroux out there with Voracek and Simmonds? I know you’re top loading if you do, but maybe just to get a spark or something.

I have to admit I was rooting against the Flyers last night (and am most nights) but this has gone beyond cheering against a rival and turned into genuine curiosity as to what is ailing the Flyers.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 12:11 PM

wow. Bashers take note. steelpenbucs has just showed you all up.

But having seen all the games this year, it seems that some combo of G/Voracek or Simmonds turns up most games. they gave Simmonds a shot at the top line early on, and i think they lost both games, and I’d say they should revisit it, but until Simmonds shows a LITTLE BIT of the ability he showed last year, I don’t know if that’s in the cards. he’s been as ineffective as G. and Voracek is in and out of the top line. he’s been one of our better looking players even if the results don’t show it. honestly, Giroux lies at the vertex of this team’s problems and until he picks it up, it’s gonna be more of the same.

  4. bobhpine - Nov 5, 2013 at 11:25 PM

How awesome is Claude Giroux? One point at a time Flygirls…you’ll make the playoffs someday.

    • philafly - Nov 6, 2013 at 8:32 AM

Flygirls! Brilliant! Did you come up with that?? It’s hilarious! Way to go, Bob!

I think you meant “Flygirlz” though. Spelling with z’s is cool!

    • laxman1944 - Nov 6, 2013 at 10:10 AM

      Piney……..Piney……..Piney……

Please tell the story about when the two Penguin players brought Lord Stanley’s cup to your office…….please please please….

      It’s such a wonderful story.

  6. hockeyfan28 - Nov 5, 2013 at 11:56 PM

You could make a pretty good case if not for of all things not good but outstanding goaltending this team could arguably be 0-14….this team is pathetic offensively a trade needs to be made the chemistry with this group just has never clicked

    • hockey412 - Nov 6, 2013 at 7:54 AM

But it DID click, though, didn’t it? Two years ago?

I understand what you are saying but it’s mindboggling to me that this is, for the most part, the SAME team offensively as they were two years ago.

  7. sjsharks66 - Nov 6, 2013 at 12:13 AM

Get rid of Hartnell and Rinaldo. Hartnell is past his prime and has nothing to give G when they are on the same line. He needs someone to make him play better. Getting rid of JVR and Jagr was a huge mistake by the Flyers.

    • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 9:10 AM

JVR was def a mistake, Jagr was all about the cap. he’s expensive for an old guy (not knocking his play, i’m still a fan)… but that’s why they brought in Downie. say what you want, but his numbers don’t lie. he thrives in top 6s. and I can’t take you seriously on Rinaldo. you think a 4th liner is the reason they suck? he didn’t even take a penalty last night and is far from that line’s worst player most nights.

      • President Charles Logan - Nov 6, 2013 at 4:49 PM

JVR was a soft player for you guys , he was over hyped. move on get over it he’s not that great .

      • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 4:55 PM

Well he’s still young and getting better. I wish the Flyers gave him more time, but they needed a D-man desperately. I’ve moved on. Flyers haters haven’t. ::cough:: sjsharks66 ::cough::

  8. bobhpine - Nov 6, 2013 at 12:14 AM

No no…they just need more team toughness…rinse repeat

    • alicesrightfootesq - Nov 6, 2013 at 12:33 AM

They just need a few more bench-clearing, sport-disgracing brawls to generate some chemistry.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 9:11 AM

bench-clearing? go back to HardballTalk troll.

  9. caniac4ever - Nov 6, 2013 at 12:42 AM

Since my team only gets one game on NBCSN, thank you for not having Pierre and “Edzo” on tonight. Made a 2-1 Canes win that much better!

    • dipthatchip - Nov 6, 2013 at 9:26 AM

I flipped over after the Caps game and was pleasantly surprised not to hear Pierre and Doc as well.

  10. jdlinder11 - Nov 6, 2013 at 12:58 AM

Another solid game for “the best player in the world”

    • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 9:11 AM

funny, the only people still calling him that are the opposite of his fans.

  11. broadstreetsbaddest88 - Nov 6, 2013 at 1:03 AM

That has to be the most frustrating loss this year. Played good defense most of the game and mason was awesome. None of that was on him. We should won this but figured out a way to screw it up at the end. Theres no excuse for losing this game.

    • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 9:12 AM

idk, i’m still butthurt over the ducks game.

  12. philafly - Nov 6, 2013 at 8:29 AM

Mason was fantastic last night. Unfortunately for him, Giroux just stood there while Staal scored the tying goal from the top of the crease. That goal was entirely on Giroux. I guess that absurd brawl wasn’t the spark you thought, eh Hartnell??

Holmgren and Berube need to go. Let Hextall take the reigns and try to fix this roster.

    • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 9:16 AM

Berube already? I think they’ve improved since he’s been there. not much, but some. they’re 3-2-1 in their last 6 games I believe (or maybe 3-3-1 in the last 7 is more accurate). Berube’s at least putting some points up. more than can be said for lavy early on (I don’t think it was his fault either). I think the players just need to take their heads out of their a**es. look at the defense. i find it hard to believe that Streit was able to overhaul the entire defense between last season and this one… because that’s about the only change they made. yet, here they are as one of the better looking defenses this season. why? because they pulled their collective head out of their collective a**. same needs to happen with just about the same offense that was churning for most of last year. i don’t see how this is Berube’s fault.

      • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 9:31 AM

by the way, I don’t necessarily know what it takes to “pull your head out of your a**” as an NHL player because I’m not an NHL player. that’s their job to figure out though.

  13. jaybaileys - Nov 6, 2013 at 9:11 AM

Wow that game was horrible. Streit’s giveaway leading to the goal just is typical for the Flyers this year. When Millbury ranks it in his top 5 worst games ever that’s saying something. He would know. I actually feel sorry for you diehard Flyers fans, has to be very tough to watch night in and night out. Atleast you aren’t shelling out big $ for tickets every night hopefully.

    • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 9:17 AM

it’s ok, the Phils and Eagles have mentally prepared us for this over the last 2 seasons.

  14. blackandorangeforlife - Nov 6, 2013 at 10:12 AM

2 players have routinely been caught watching the Puck go in the net this season…….#5 and #28…..Yet Schenn was the healthy scratch?……Why was Coburn that far up the ice when Streit was trying to enter the zone?…..Scratching him wont change anything but it may work for Giroux…..Waive Coburn and scratch G for a game or two….Put Lauridson in over Mezzaros and bring laughton to take G’s roster spot for a game or two!

    • orangandblack - Nov 6, 2013 at 10:33 AM

Laughton is in juniors, you can’t just bring him up for a game or two, it’s not the AHL. I also think Coburn has cleaned it up the last few games, but I wouldn’t care if he went somewhere. I think the real problem on the blue line is Kimo and Streit. If I see Kimo get beat, and compensate with a hook one more time, I’m gonna throw my phone at the TV. That’ll show em!

      • ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 10:51 AM

Da**it, lost another comment to the profanity nazis.

        I said:
Streit has been great aside from that turnover that Coburn should have been able to pick up the slack before. moving the puck like we know he can do AND playing defense, that’s just a bonus.
Grossmann has been our best d-man this year, by far though.
Agree in full on Kimmo. I have no clue where his legs went from last season. End of last season, he was our best (performing) d-man… but that’s not really saying much, is it?

  15. ibieiniid - Nov 6, 2013 at 10:51 AM

    for*, not “before.”

  16. joey4id - Nov 6, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Time for another line brawl……. Heck! Let’s hope it’s a bench clearing brawl because surely they need this to win on a constant basis.

  17. babykaby - Nov 7, 2013 at 2:07 AM

The Flyers need to stop all the bs fighting and start playing hockey. Everyone wants to blame CG for the Flyers woes, but one player doesn’t make the entire team suck. In reality it starts with the coach, maybe it’s time for the coach to “man up” and get this team to stop behaving like a$$holes and start playing like nhl players.
