Flames’ Berra beats Blackhawks in NHL debut

Earlier on Sunday, Calgary Flames head coach Bob Hartley implied that Sunday would be just the beginning of Reto Berra’s opportunities. The little-known 26-year-old made sure of that tonight.

You cannot ask for a much tougher debut assignment than facing the Blackhawks in Chicago, yet the Swiss-born goalie was up to the task, making 42 out of 44 saves to help Calgary gain a 3-2 OT victory.

Tonight’s game began a Central Division road trip that goes from Chicago to Minnesota (Tuesday), St. Louis (Thursday) and Colorado on Friday. It wouldn’t be surprising, at all, to see Berra receive one – if not two – of those starts.

He remains something of a mystery to much of the hockey world, but he might just make a name for himself at this rate.

As you can see, his hard work didn’t go unnoticed by the Flames:

Woooow. What a night for the kid. Fantastic debut, and against the Cup champs no less!

He played great tonight, made some big stops especially the one in close on the 5 on 3, even though Chicago scored just after the first penalty ended to tie it, without this initial save they may have gotten two and won it.

I’ve said the same thing in all of my Flames comments here this season, and I’ll say it again, this is a fun team to watch, they play tough and work hard every night and almost all of their losses have been games they’ve been in late. I don’t really care what the wins and losses are at the end of the year (although I want them to finish ahead of the “young and explosive Oilers”) as long as the young team competes hard and shows improvement throughout the year, I’ll consider this a successful season for the Flames.

I know it’s only been one game, but I think the Flames have their starting goalie now. That was an impressive first showing.

Hats off to Berra, Hawks threw everything but the kitchen sink at him. He kept the Flames in this game, Hawks dominated the zone and play, not the scoreboard.

He looked real empresive tonight especially against the best team in the league firing 44 shots on ya. Hell of a team to play against as your first game. There’s a reason Calgary was so high on him. If he plays like this and that first round draft pick poirier turns out then they robbed the blues in that trade. Not to mention cundari as a throw in. It’s good to see Calgary doin good when no one thought they were capable of winning, including myself.
