Video: Canucks retire Bure’s number

Nov 2, 2013, 9:34 PM EDT

A day after locking up the current faces of their franchise for four more seasons, the Vancouver Canucks celebrated the past, retiring Pavel Bure’s No. 10 on Saturday before their game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Here’s video of the ceremony:

To give you an idea of how beloved “The Russian Rocket” remains in Vancouver, note this tidbit from Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston:

Wow. Even when Pavel was young there were rumors that he had ties to the Russian Mob. Now he just flat out looks like someone that has has a trunk full of semi-automatic weapons, and a guy that opens all of his doors for him. He’s even got the Russian Boss hair and gut.

He’s younger than Jagr and Selanne. If it weren’t for his bum knees he could still be playing and scoring 30+ goals. Could have broke the 700 goal club with relative ease as well.

When Bure left the NHL without notice, he left a bad taste is the NHL and fans mouth. This joke does not deserve to have his number hanging in the raftors. Canucks doing this for some kind of pathetic publicity stunt?

Yes, because the Canucks (who have the longest active sellout streak in the NHL) really need the publicity.

Pavel was forced out by multiple knee surgeries. No more no less.
