NHL: No hearing scheduled for Emery after Holtby fight

Nov 2, 2013, 3:49 PM EST

Flyers goalie Ray Emery has no disciplinary hearing scheduled after his fisticuffs with Washington’s Braden Holtby on Friday night, according to an NHL spokesman.

Emery, 31, was given 29 penalty minutes, including a game misconduct, after challenging Holtby to a scrap in the third period of the Caps’ 7-0 win at Wells Fargo. Holtby, who looked to be an unwilling participant, absorbed several blows before linesmen and players intervened.

Here’s the video:

Emery got an instigator penalty, a five-minute major for fighting, and a game misconduct for his actions. Following the game, the Philly netminder confirmed that Holtby wasn’t interested in throwing down.

“[Holtby] didn’t want to fight and I basically said, ‘Protect yourself,’” Emery said, as per the Washington Post. “He didn’t really have much of a choice.”

NOTE: The NHL does hold the option of re-assessing the incident and scheduling a hearing at any time. That said, the Flyers do have a game this evening against New Jersey, so it’s likely a hearing would have been held already if Emery was set to face a suspension.

UPDATE: Here’s more on the situation, from ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun.
