Journeyman goaltender Joey MacDonald was respectable with a struggling Calgary Flames team last season and they rewarded him with a one-way contract. Unfortunately, he only ended up lasting about a month into the 2013-14 campaign before the Flames decided to expose him to waivers, according to CBC’s Elliotte Friedman.

MacDonald has gotten off to a rough start with a 3.16 GAA and .885 save percentage in seven starts this season, although those numbers are still superior to his counterpart Karri Ramo.

This move opens will allow the Calgary Flames to summon Reto Berra from the minors. The 26-year-old goaltender is making the transition from the Swiss league to North America and has a 2.66 GAA and .908 save percentage in nine AHL games.

Joining MacDonald on waivers is Buffalo Sabres forward Patrick Kaleta, reports the Canadian Press’ Stephen Whyno.

Fresh off of his 10-game suspension, Sabres GM Darcy Regier felt moving Kaleta to the minors is necessary to “help Pat change his game and preserve his career in this league.”

Defenseman Keaton Ellerby won’t have to play in the minors, at least not yet. Although the Los Angeles Kings waived him, the Jets’ Scott Brown has confirmed that Winnipeg claimed him today. Ellerby didn’t get into a single game with the Kings this season and the Jets will be the third NHL team he’s played for in two seasons.

What’s the odds the flyers claim Kaleta on waivers to add more “grit and sandpaper” to their game?

    • beelza - Nov 2, 2013 at 12:39 PM

Considering their goalie is the toughest guy on the team, I’d say pretty high.

      • drewsylvania - Nov 2, 2013 at 3:54 PM

I know it’s a joke (I laughed), but it doesn’t take toughness to beat on a guy who doesn’t want to fight.

      • beelza - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:36 PM

It was meant as a rip on Philly, from a Red Wings fan.

    • flyersfan85 - Nov 2, 2013 at 4:16 PM

I was pretty pissed that you said this… simple for the fact that I was thinking it when I saw Kaleta on waivers but you beat me to the punch. Be seeing ya around Curious. I don’t hate the Pens.. just their fans.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:02 PM

Wow you can’t even comment on a Sabres thread without bringing up the Flyers. You should seek help for your stalker tendencies.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:31 PM

Sabres thread? Pretty sure it’s a article about players going on waivers. Not team specific.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:34 PM

Im pretty sure you’re still a Flyers stalker.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:06 PM

Says the guy posting 3 minutes after me.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:16 PM

Its OK pseudo yinzer. You can get help. Support groups, therapists or even a priest if you prefer.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:20 PM

Same can be said of your team. Heck Ed snider even tried going to the pope. Talk about desperate.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:25 PM

Ed is Jewish so that just highlights your stupidity.

        Or highlights yours.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 11:01 PM

Like I said, it highlights your stupidity. If you think that Ed visited the Pope to have him pray for the team then you are an even bigger idiot than your posts suggest.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 2, 2013 at 11:08 PM

It was a joke. I don’t think you understand what jokes are.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 11:13 PM

Oh, I understand jokes. It’s your disturbing obsession with the Flyers I can’t wrap m head around. Like I said earlier, this thread was about waivers from Buffalo and others and as usual you made it about the Flyers.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 2, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Yea with a joke! Which is what your team is. I’m done with you.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 11:30 PM

A bigger joke than the Flyers having a crappy first month is 2 goals during a ECF sweep.

        2 goals…2013

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 3, 2013 at 9:36 AM

Wanna talk about years try 1975. Last time the flyers were relevant.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 3, 2013 at 12:04 PM

Yeah cause those whopping two goals your team scored proves their soooo relevant.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 3, 2013 at 12:50 PM

No 3 Stanley cups since the flyers last cup 38 years ago, proves their relevant.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 3, 2013 at 3:24 PM

So that means you have exactly one cup more than the Flyers, so give it a rest. Your incessant droning and trolling is becoming nauseating.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 3, 2013 at 1:05 PM

I don’t know what’s worse, your attempted comebacks or giroux’s attempts at scoring a goal. Seriously a goalie has more goals then your captain. Let that sink in. Good luck with that 8 year contract.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 3, 2013 at 3:28 PM

You know whats worse than my comebacks and Giroux’s zero goals?

        2 goals…..2013.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 3, 2013 at 3:42 PM

Haha your making fun of a team not scoring a lot in the eastern conference finals, when your squad didn’t even make the playoffs. Seriously buddy your terrible at this. Just stop.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 3, 2013 at 4:12 PM

Not scoring a lot is what my team is doing now. Getting out scored 12-2 and shutout twice on the way to being swept is an abortion. You may go now.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 3, 2013 at 4:36 PM

You realize the pens played 15 more playoffs games then the flyers last year right? Your probably not even old enough to have witnessed the flyers win a Stanley cup in person. That’s sad. I feel sorry for you.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 3, 2013 at 4:51 PM

Yup, 15 more playoff games. Four of which were abysmal collapses. The year before that the Flyers made your hens look like a club team.

      • curioustraveler13 - Nov 3, 2013 at 4:59 PM

So I guess that’s a no on the whole seeing the flyers win a cup live thing then huh? Sad. 39 years of coming up short. Never achieving the ultimate goal.

  2. drewsylvania - Nov 2, 2013 at 12:53 PM

If they’re going to waive Kaleta, they should waive Scott as well. Kaleta is at least somewhat useful when he’s not being a total *****.

    • prd797 - Nov 2, 2013 at 1:09 PM

I’m still surprised the Blackhawks got a 5th rounder for Scott from the Rangers a few years ago.

  3. drewsylvania - Nov 2, 2013 at 3:55 PM

I didn’t realize Regier got suspended ten games.

Must be because of all the poor roster moves.

  4. wmsshapiro - Nov 2, 2013 at 5:19 PM

Poor Joey MacDonald he comes so close in grabbing the job and he misses by a hair or two. We had on the Island played good but missed out . His track record in the minors is good . I wish he cant take that extra step. I wish him all the best . Don’t give up I know you can do it.
