Emery shuts out Devils

Nov 2, 2013, 9:44 PM EDT

The Philadelphia Flyers turned some heads by naming Ray Emery Saturday’s starter after Friday’s fight fest, but it paid off.

Sure, he only needed to make 14 saves, but a shutout’s a shutout. Emery stopped the New Jersey Devils’ feeble attempts at offense to help Philly win 1-0.

Maybe a random Wayne Simmonds fan can feel a little pride again? (via Getty):

Brayden Schenn was the game’s only goal scorer. Martin Brodeur allowed one goal on 21 shots.

    • 950003cups - Nov 3, 2013 at 1:51 AM

It’s official. WE SUCK!! Fire DeBoer!!

  2. lionsflyersandredbirds - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:51 PM

That’s definitely not a Simmer jersey. Regardless, it was quite the surprise holding a team to less than 15 shots. I kind of feel like, at this point, it says more about the Devils’ O than the Flyers’ D. But i’ll take a win any way we can get em…

Looks like the blind squirrel found a nut.

      Sour grapes, yinzer?

      • cheesesteak75 - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:09 PM

No sour grapes, just the truth.

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Nah, its sour grapes. You’re dismissed.

      • cheesesteak75 - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:15 PM

That’s right New Jersey is a power house team. You have been dismissed since 1975!

      • devilsarethebest - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:18 PM

        BAM!

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:22 PM

A shut out is a shut out.

tubesteak75 he went from a KO too a SO

  4. broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:58 PM

Ha ha ha a KO last night and a shutout tonight. Nice job Razor and Flyers D.

  5. garryjercia - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:08 PM

Not a Simmonds jersey. Looks like a Brind’Amour to me

    • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Nov 3, 2013 at 1:24 AM

Na Brind’Amour was traded almost ten years before them jersey came out. That’s a gagne jersey.

      • matthewmacisaac - Nov 3, 2013 at 8:37 AM

A black #17 would be Carter.

      • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Nov 3, 2013 at 10:13 AM

If it was a 17 it would be. It’s a 12. Look on the other side you’ll see the bottom of the 2. I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure carter didnt wear the A when them jerseys were around. That was at the end of his flyers career.

  6. devilsarethebest - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Yes we played terrible, but just a side note, they really need people to show up to games. Last year they sold out all except three and this year they only cracked 14,000 once. While I am happy I chose against going tonight, there should be more people that show up.

  7. mclovinhockey - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:21 PM

It’s Carter, it’s the lady black jersey the flyers had, look at the sleves. Still hilarious though.

@the devils fan talking about attendance. It’s true they do need more people to show up, they have a great core of a fan base, so many die hards, but not enough average fans to fill the seats /:

  8. drewsylvania - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:46 PM

No supplemental discipline for Ray Emery. I hate Emery, but as I got destroyed for saying yesterday, there was nothing in the rulebook that required his suspension for what he did.

  9. uscthom78 - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:54 PM

I see him without a helmet and I feel like saying “Protect yourself.”

  10. cspsrbums - Nov 2, 2013 at 11:47 PM

Emery is a clown like any fan that supports him. Nothing but a punk, So two high schools team had a game and Emery gets a shutout whoa hoo. I guess all the goals he let in last night just balanced out the 14 stops he made tonight even Stevey Wonder could of done that.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 3, 2013 at 1:09 AM

A knock out and a shut out. Go Razor!!

  11. isaiah520 - Nov 3, 2013 at 12:03 AM

loved watching the game tonite…then again, i like watching paint dry…flyers are buried as a marginal plyoff contender until they straighten out their lack of mobility on the backline.

  12. bobhpine - Nov 3, 2013 at 12:14 AM

This broadstreet moron is so precious. It really takes a special kind of idiot to brag about:

    1) beating one of the worst teams in the league
    2) winning after getting annihilated 7-0 by the caps who didn’t even have Ovechkin
    3) winning for the 4th time all year….haha nice job

Here’s a stat for your feeble brain. The Penguins acquired half as many wins in 27 hours as the Flyers have in over a month.

Before you launch into your predictable insults about my mom or being gay, etc. (yawn, your bigotry is always so hurtful btw), honestly dude, answer this question: is it disappointing to have never seen your team win the cup?

It’s a simple question. Can you answer it?

Do you ever get sick of defending such a pathetic team?

    • isaiah520 - Nov 3, 2013 at 12:35 AM

i’m new here so i’ll be brief. i’ll take any win, but i’m under no illusions about the ceiling on this poorly constructed team. they should have let the coach and GM go after last yr.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 3, 2013 at 12:51 AM

      1) Shutting out any NHL team even one of the worst in the league is no easy feat (I don’t expect you to realize that)
      2) The perfect response to a 7-0 blowout is to WIN less than 24 hours later (While your defense holds them to 14 shots)
      3) There is still plenty of hockey to be played . I’ve been watching long enough to know that. You, obviously not so much (See 2010 Flyers squad).

What would be really disappointing is if The Flyers went into bankruptcy multiple times, purposely tanked multiple seasons to obtain high draft picks, have a record of abysmal attendance and have the owner threaten to relocate the team to Kansas City or Las Vegas on several occasions. As to your original question the Flyers have won two cups in my lifetime, so I guess that makes you the special kind of moron (we all knew that already).

You sir, are an idiot. Go back to gay day dreams of your mother (you brought it up).

Stick to your poodles, french wine and fantasies of Disco Dan and Pascal Dupuis hand delivering the cup to your office.

      2 goals….2013

      • mp1131211 - Nov 3, 2013 at 3:32 AM

        1) There were 4 shutouts tonight alone. Oilers, blue jackets, leafs, and devils. The only goalie feeling special tonight against any one of those teams is Luongo.
        2) Response to last night? Try firing your loser head coach followed by your pocket pooling GM. You don’t need to bounce back from last night, you need to bounce back from games 1-12… More like seasons 1990-2012.
        3) What’s your point? That much more time to fall behind? That many more useless fights to start?

Please… Shut up. Do you and the philladelphia flyers fan base a favor.

    • ziplock10 - Nov 3, 2013 at 9:44 AM

As I stated before.. Caps up 5-0 and Volpatti just abused Downie to the point that he conceded while still on his skates. Volpatti cut Downie a break by allowing him to quit. Emery punched Holtby repeatably while he was on all fours.

Atleast Holtby didn’t try and shake his mask off to disallow a goal.

      A true Philly hero!!

    • orangandblack - Nov 3, 2013 at 10:02 AM

bobhpine…..die hard pens fan since 2008

  13. vincentbojackson - Nov 3, 2013 at 12:53 AM

    To summarize:

Division’s last place team shut out division’s second to last place team. Both remain irrelevant.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 3, 2013 at 1:04 AM

      Sort of like your opinion.

    • hockeyfan28 - Nov 3, 2013 at 1:34 AM

      Bo don’t know hockey

  14. lenapedevil - Nov 3, 2013 at 1:08 AM

Inconsistent play and losing games they should win should keep the Devils out of this season’s playoffs. Tonight, the Devils joined the Flyers, the Panthers, and the Sabres as the worst teams in the NHL’s Eastern Conference.

The Devils’ 41 year olds in Jagr and Brodeur continue being the Devils’ best players. The rest of the team needs to step it up and play better.

  15. martysbetter - Nov 3, 2013 at 2:35 AM

The sad reality that this team may wind up having to forfeit a lottery pick is scary.

  16. bobhpine - Nov 3, 2013 at 4:48 AM

Ever notice how Flyer fans never reference Stanley Cup in defense of their crap team? I wonder why.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 3, 2013 at 12:09 PM

See above post troll. Don’t let facts confuse you.

  17. bobhpine - Nov 3, 2013 at 4:58 AM

Please never fire Holmgren. I mean, what a great GM.

Which recent Holmgren move is your favorite Flyer fans?

    1) overpaying an over the hill Lecavalier
    2) overpaying an over the hill Chris Pronger
    3) overpaying an over the hill Kimo Timonen (again)
    4) overpaying an over the hill Mark Streit
    5) overpaying and then using the amnesty on Bryzgalov
    6) overpaying and then using the amnesty on Danny Briere
    7) overpaying the best player in the world Claude Giroux (zero goals)
    8) overpaying Scott Hartnell (5 goals last year)
    9) giving away Bobrovsky
    10) giving away Carter
    11) giving away Richards
    12) giving away JVR
    13) giving up Max Talbot for a stooge like Steve Downie
    14) firing Laviolette after three whole games (ha!)
    15) Hiring a thug like Craig Berube

Seriously, which move is your favorite Flyer fans? At least you have a genius mind like Ron Hextall waiting in the wings to take over. Haha. Hashtag1975 #1975 #werealllaughing

Don’t even acknowledge this clown anymore. He’s got less hockey knowledge than Mike Milbury and spends 23 hrs a day on his knees like Pierre Mcguire… the dudes a joke. He jumped on the Sidney Crosby/Malkin bandwagon and has never looked back. We live in a city where the people support their teams even when they aren’t he cream of the crop, and that’s just something Bobhpine cant understand. Bob, enjoy your next 5-8 years of success before we never hear from you again.

  18. multiplemiggs - Nov 3, 2013 at 6:38 AM

Ten flyers articles and 2 Oilers articles, meanwhile the Islanders again dominated one of the best teams in the NHL and there is no mention of it.

    • orangandblack - Nov 3, 2013 at 10:04 AM

I’m sure the media wants to cover stories people care about. Forgive them for that.

  19. drewsylvania - Nov 3, 2013 at 9:22 AM

The Philly fans here are doing a disservice to rational Philly fans everywhere.

    • WillIEverSeeACupInMyLife? - Nov 3, 2013 at 11:12 AM

Can’t agree more. It does get old hearing about 1975, but when your only comeback is “your team went bankrupt” shows how stupid some fans are. Yes, Pittsburgh had problems, but doesn’t that make it even worse that they’ve won 3 cups since?

      • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 3, 2013 at 4:14 PM

Seems like you and the rest of the Pens fans are leading the stupidity charge.

      • WillIEverSeeACupInMyLife? - Nov 3, 2013 at 6:23 PM

        I’m a Philadelphia fan idiot

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 3, 2013 at 4:17 PM

I like how you and the rest of the Hens cronies show up to masturbate all over every single Flyers thread and then have the stones to talk about a disservice to rational fans.

  20. antmel30 - Nov 3, 2013 at 3:38 PM

Bophine the difference between philly and pitt is we will always support our team no matter if they are great or suck. As long as their jersey is from our city we support. We wouldn’t expect the front runner fans to understand this. That’s why we were never went of were in danger of going bankrupt. 1975 or not ill just laugh that a guy like Dave Schultz has more rings then Crosby and malkin.
