Amid allegations of domestic violence and just one day after spending time in jail, the Colorado Avalanche decided to start goaltender Semyon Varlamov against the Dallas Stars.
Despite everything that’s transpired, Varlamov was just as effective as he has been all season, turning aside 27 of 29 shots to earn an overtime victory.
“I got such good teammates, so I don’t think about what’s happening,” Varlamov said, courtesy of the Denver Post’s Adrian Dater. “I said before, no comments on that. I feel very comfortable today.”
Avalanche coach Patrick Roy added that the team wanted to rally around Varlamov. Prior to the game, he made it clear that Varlamov was still their guy.
The Avalanche are now 11-1-0 this season, which puts them in a tie with the San Jose Sharks in terms of points. However, the Avalanche have more wins than San Jose and have played in one less game. That’s quite the jump for a team that finished in the basement of the Western Conference last season.
