The Los Angeles Kings have placed defenseman Keaton Ellerby on waivers, according to TVA’s Renaud Lavoie.

Ellerby, 24, hasn’t played this season but has taken a number of warm-up skates, the odd-man out in a defensive group that’s only featured seven players — Drew Doughty, Matt Greene, Alec Martinez, Willie Mitchell, Jake Muzzin, Slava Voynov and Robyn Regehr.

Acquired by Los Angeles last year with Mitchell and Greene out to injury, Ellerby appeared in 35 regular season and five playoff games for the Kings.

It’s believed L.A. made this transaction in order to bring up Tyler Toffoli and Linden Vey from AHL Manchester. Toffoli leads the Monarchs with 12 points in 10 games while Vey sits second in scoring, with 11 points.

The Kings have also placed forward Jeff Carter on injured reserve. It’s unclear what his ailment is — in Tuesday’s 4-3 OT win over San Jose, Carter played a season-high 23:02 and was on the ice for Anze Kopitar‘s game-winner in the extra session.

Ryan Stanton has been such a good pickup from the Blackhawks, and Vancouver could still use some depth on D.

I’d really be surprised if he clears.

Despite the high TOI it really looked like something was wrong with Carter the last couple of games. I’m excited to see what Toffoli and Vey can do with this opportunity!

Hopefully Jeff’s ailment isn’t anything serious eh ? … though it is good to see young Toffoli back in the line, that’s for sure. Not sure about other Kings’ fans, but I haven’t cared for this Ellerby guy ever since he joined us last year. I can’t quite put a finger on it, however I feel there was something ‘smarmy & furtive’ about his play on our back end ? Anyway, with any luck we’ve seen the last of him.

I know your team needs fans, but you’ve come to the wrong neighborhood.

Oh well, all good things must end. Toffoli’s so much better than the guys he’s playing with and against in the AHL it isn’t funny. I was surprised he stayed to make it to the home opener but it was pretty clear that he was the best player on the ice every time he was on it and he wouldn’t be in Manchester for long. Vey is no slouch either. But he might end up back in Manchvegas because he’s more of a work in progress. Tyler is an offensive machine.
