‘I understand the passion': Oilers coach Eakins on fans’ frustration

Times are tough for Edmonton Oilers’ fans.

So tough, in fact, that head coach Dallas Eakins’ young daughter is hearing about it from her peers at school.

October has come to an end, and the Oilers, with growing expectations levied upon them this season, have a record of 3-9-2, good enough for last in the Pacific Division.

“I have kids bugging my daughter at school. That’s not very much fun,” Eakins said Thursday, as per the Edmonton Sun.

“I’m walking my daughter to school yesterday and I have one kid yelling at everybody ‘There’s the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers!’ And my five-year-old daughter gets real excited because, ‘That’s my daddy.’

“And then I have another kid yelling, ‘You suck!’”

That’s not very nice. However, kids rarely come with filters. But that’s not the only situation in which Eakins has heard it from an increasingly frustrated fan base. Adults, too.

“I understand the passion. I understand the guy who yells out of his car at me when I’m at the gas station, then speeds away. I understand people, as I walk into a restaurant, murmuring something under their breath. I’m OK with it,” said Eakins, as per the Edmonton Journal.

“When we do turn this thing around … that passion will turn the other way. The guy at the gas station will probably buy me my gas and the people in the restaurant are probably going to buy me dinner. So if I’m OK with that part of it, I’d better be OK with this.”

JFJ used to always show up at my school and I had to fight every urge to set him on a Jimmy Hoffa-esque route. Sounds like Eakins has it easy so far.

Really, he and his team should be hearing it from everyone. This is the most talented last place team I’ve seen in a while. They need to trade Hall or Eberle or someone just to strike fear into the rest of the team. Nothing else seems to be motivating them to play decent hockey.

I think they should dangle their first round pick in front of St. Louis for Brian Elliot. Consider trading Hall for a high end shutdown D-man. Obviously tough for both fans and management to give up one of their gems, but they won’t be able to land a marquee defenseman any other way. They have Nurse already who will be a great player so I think management needs to get away from the drafting strategy and get aggressive in the trade market.

Seriously? 15 games in the season, and we’re talking about a team almost no one picked to be in the playoffs. All their top end talent is 23 or under. It’s not time to panic yet.

Coaches do not play the game otherwise they would be wearing a jock strap.

These group of players probably are overrated. Each player is responsible for themselves.

    Players play the game.

Potential is a bad word for some.
    Big money spoils many.

    Chemistry matters

Sorry Dallas, you won’t be around for that free dinner and tank of gas.

On a side note, does anyone ever buy a tank of gas for someone driving a Range Rover?

I wrote this a few weeks ago for another story about the Oilers and a few die hards really ripped me … but man, anyone who has seen the Oilers play has to be greatly concerned by the chaos in their own zone. The way they fired their last coach was pretty amateurish and they may be victims of bad karma who knows … all I can say is that Eakins looks overmatched at times and has an expression of sheer confusion when his team starts running around.

They don’t know how to cut the center of the ice and they don’t know who to pick up on the back-check. In front of their net its terrible.

I don’t want to wish for any coach to lose his job, but they at least looked organized under Kruger. Eakins … i dunno. They could be out of the playoff race by December 1 and then the bottom might just fall out.

welcome to the big league Eakins if you don’t get it turned around soon you will start finding nasty presents around your home, its unfortunate but that’s how rednecks react to losing….
