Downie concussed, hospitalized in Flyers debut (Update: Lecavalier’s injured too)

The Philadelphia Flyers lost more than a game on Friday.

Steve Downie suffered a concussion during the 7-0 defeat to the Washington Capitals, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sam Carchidi.

The Flyers acquired Downie from the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday in exchange for forward Maxime Talbot. The hope was that Downie could provide the struggling Flyers with a spark, but unfortunately he was hurt in his first game since the transaction.

The 26-year-old forward had seven points and 36 penalty minutes in 11 games with the Colorado Avalanche. He had a minus-one rating and got into a fight with Washington’s Aaron Volpatti tonight.

Update: In case Flyers fans were looking for more bad news Vincent Lecavalier is now sidelined with facial injuries, according to the Philadelphia Daily News’ Frank Seravalli.

    Volpatti for 2nd star?

    • goskinsvt - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:14 PM

If you don’t understand that it’s a joke.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:16 PM

At least holtby blocked more overhand rights than emery blocked pucks !

    • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:52 PM

Why not Emery was 3rd star ?

      • cobra617 - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:32 AM

Me name Elmer Brown. Me like speak english good.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Nov 2, 2013 at 11:24 AM

Cobra hahahah I bet your sporting your best camo baseball cap right now with a pinch between your rotten teeth and jacked up gums hahahahah !

      • cobra617 - Nov 2, 2013 at 2:12 PM

Elmer, Elmer, Elmer…..What you described would be the complete opposite of me. That is neither here nor there. The more pressing issue at hand is that you thought that I am some sort of redneck once I poked fun at your obvious grasp of english grammar. Why is that a pressing issue? Are you used to having rotten tooth camo wearing rednecks correcting and/or poking fun of your english? If so, I think that you should look into getting that GED. It may open up all sorts of career advancement opportunities. Or maybe I will put it into terms you can understand.
“Why not Elmer Brown was not get a GED?”

      • cobra617 - Nov 2, 2013 at 2:19 PM

Elmer, as a public service I will correct your incoherent rambling. You wrote:
“Cobra hahahah I bet your sporting your best camo baseball cap right now with a pinch between your rotten teeth and jacked up gums hahahahah !”

        A better version would be:

“Cobra that was quite comical. I would fathom to guess that at this moment you are (notice that “you are” does not equal your) wearing a camouflage baseball cap. In addition, you are probably indulging in the grotesque habit of placing chewing tobacco between your rotted teeth and your gingivitis stricken gums.”

You’re welcome. Or as you would say Your welcome.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Nov 3, 2013 at 6:27 AM

Your really quite fluent at the QUEENS ENGLISH

      • cobra617 - Nov 3, 2013 at 8:22 AM

Sigh, Elmer. As much as I try, I just can’t fix stupid. The best part of your response. I just told you and pointed out the correct usage of your/you’re and yet there you go again. Apparently, your remaining two brain cells were busy fighting with each other when you should have learned about the correct usage of your/you’re. That’s ok buddy. There is still purpose in your life. No matter how stupid and imbecilic you are, you can still amount to something. I now feel bad about bullying someone with a mental handicap.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Nov 3, 2013 at 11:47 AM

Your a zero trying to be a one,,, coming on a hockey site and being a QUEEN insulting peoples grammar ! Your THE QUEEN BULLY ! AHHAAAHHAAHHA!

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Nov 3, 2013 at 11:49 AM

Oh by the way QUEEN BULLY you actually admit to being a bully ! What a d-dag !

      • cobra617 - Nov 3, 2013 at 7:23 PM

Elmer you ignorant fool. I admitted to bullying someone with a mental handicap. By agreeing with that statement, you agree that you have a mental handicap. I am not sure why I am pointing this out. You probably still don’t get it. This isn’t even fun. It is sad to watch this train wreck that is Elmer Brown. Ahhh, who am I kidding, this is fun. I must admit I do look forward to it. About twice a day I hop on the laptop and come to this page. I can’t wait to say what words of infinite wisdom the great and wise Elmer has for us. It gives me a good laugh.

That’s ok, it’s not your fault that you are stupid. We can chalk it up to genetics.

But then again, I guess I am a QUEEN BULLY (whatever the f that is) and a d – dag. I’ve not heard of the term d – dag before. Is is a stutter? Is it an abbreviation for daggoneit? Dagnabbit? Some other term of frustration that begins with dag? It must be Elmer-speak.

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Nov 3, 2013 at 9:18 PM

D-bag short for douche -bag someone that is socially dysfunctional a genuine a-hole !

      • elmerbrownelmerbrown - Nov 3, 2013 at 9:33 PM

Queen Bully I defined what a d-bag is now Queen Bully who speaks and types perfect Queens English I never heard of the term d-dag ahahhaha d-dag you stupid punk

  6. hocsocmom715 - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Bunch of sore losers. Go Caps!!!!

  7. boltsfan777 - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Downie is a great fit for the Flyers. Decent but not great player who is totally fearless and loves to fight. Great team guy.

    • alicesrightfootesq - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Lol read: “No skill guy who behaves like a Neanderthal. Ideal Flyers player.”

    • dropthepuckeh - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Downie is a perfect fit for the current Flyers – under achieving, dirty, injured and despised by the majority of his peers. Hard to feel bad for the Flyers when they behave like tonight but still hate to see anyone, even punks, injured.

      • bethgoesglobal - Nov 2, 2013 at 12:13 AM

I may be a Caps fan but I do think that Downie is actually a pretty good player, and could provide that “spark” that Giroux needs right now. This is a real bummer for the Flyers who can’t seem to get anything together right now.

And at the time my guess is he started that fight to try and light a little fire under that bench’s butts! It wasn’t a dirty fight, and it certainly doesn’t make him a “Neanderthal” (versus, say, Ray Emery’s conduct this evening)

  8. crazemastercraze - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:29 PM

Yeah that instigator penalty Downie took was totally worth it. Haha

  9. stcrowe - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:32 PM

Something tells me that there will be no big outpouring of sympathy for him.

  10. mclovinhockey - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:42 PM

One of Downie or vinny has been brought to the hospital on a stretcher…

  11. whammy71 - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:47 PM

Again – glad CaveMan hockey is alive and well on the other side of the state.

    Enjoy your crappy season!

  12. storminator16 - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:56 PM

Truly, after all the head injuries Downie has caused in his career… ironic.

  13. alicesrightfootesq - Nov 1, 2013 at 10:58 PM

Serious question: Do they try to deal VL4 at the deadline? I can’t imagine he still wants to be there plus they’ll need the picks.

  14. antmel30 - Nov 1, 2013 at 11:00 PM

Whammy we will take whatever happens this season in philly. We don’t run from our teams in Philly. Enjoy the regular season because apparently to pens fans the regular season is their Stanley cup aways bragging and talking smack. Then comes the playoffs where all your problems get exposed. You really think the pens are going to get through a team like leafs or Detroit or even Boston with the 25 th rnk pk. Plus there are some truths in this world no matter if the flyers are horrible for 20 years the flyers will be right here in philly with fans supporting them. I cant imagine pitt make it when Crosby and malkin are gone. Facts don’t lie bud in 04 or 05 when pens blew you guys were 30 th in league in home attendance the flyers when they blow were 7 th why because we are loyal. Say what you want about philly but we support and will continue to support no matter good or bad.

    • dropthepuckeh - Nov 1, 2013 at 11:12 PM

It is not a question: how bad. Not much good to see out of that clown show tonight. Fighting has a place in the game but 5 or 6-0 is definitely not the place. Emery is a goon, little surprise he landed in Philly this year. Don’t care for Downie but hope he is okay longterm.

    • buysamadrink - Nov 1, 2013 at 11:30 PM

Well, glad to hear you’re committed to your team. 1975…and counting.

    • steelcity333 - Nov 1, 2013 at 11:34 PM

Hilarious to hear that a Flyers fan saying that the Pens fans only care about regular season success. You do realize your team hasn’t won the Cup since 1975, right? Have fun looking WAYYY up at the Pens again.

      • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Nov 1, 2013 at 11:44 PM

Funny comin from a pens fan that wasn’t there supporting them when they won there last one. Pretty pathetic considering it was only 5 years ago. You can’t brag about it when you aren’t there for it. I got to see them in two so far and lost both and I’d take supporting them through loses then you who coulda witnessed 3 in the last 22 years and miss all.

      • donniesd - Nov 2, 2013 at 1:26 PM

Definitely not a fan of either team, but the pens were looking for a new city until mario came along with his investment group and saved the day… go ahead and dislike, I could care less, the pick of Crosby and recent success has made this a trendy team to follow. I’ve been watching hockey for many years I am a fan of many players and teams so I’m speaking objectively and just stating the facts. besides I would take a trendy penguins fan over a wannabe Philly thug any day. It seems like Philly fans are living vicariously through their team.

    • petemagoop - Nov 2, 2013 at 1:11 AM

ya right – just oozing with support over @ philly dot com

    • 2jivecrew - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:15 AM

LOL Philly fans always go back to that ONE season as far as attendance when the Pens were icing an AHL squad. Yeah i’m real sure Philly fans would’ve been packing the arena for guys like Rico Fata and Kris Beech.

At least he Pens have managed a few Cups since the Gerald Ford administration…..unlike Philly.

By the way, how’s Chip Kelly working out for you guys this year? Is his offense still “laying the blueprint” for the new modern NFL offense? LOL

    • whammy71 - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:55 AM

blah, blah, blah….sorry – diehard fan here. I’ve been through the thick and thin with this franchise.

And I’ve already gone on record this season about my post-season worries and concerns with the Pens. But at least the Pens will get to the post-season.

Enjoy your crappy season. And I pray for many more!

Only a matter of time before sean avery’s phone rings.

  16. icelovinbrotha215 - Nov 1, 2013 at 11:39 PM

You know what the worse thing is? McDavid isn’t eligible till 2015.

    • hazlydose - Nov 2, 2013 at 2:44 AM

I can see Mcdavid having a Lindros situation if the Flyers have the number one pick.

  17. stcrowe - Nov 1, 2013 at 11:49 PM

Berube is as dumb as a coach as he was as a player. So, your team is losing in a blowout halfway through the third period. What to do? The tried and true “sending a message” always worked back in your playing days. What can go wrong? Oops, your own players get injured, and they aren’t talentless stiffs like Ed Hospodar, or Jeff Chychrun. I guess the game has changed since the 80s.

  18. steelcity333 - Nov 1, 2013 at 11:52 PM

Kind of hard to witness the first two when I was only 3 and 4 years old, respectively, when we won them. By the way it was so sweet beating the Flyers on the way to winning the one in 2009. And by the way you did witness the Flyers winning their version of the Cup when they beat us two years ago in the playoffs. Like I said have fun looking way up at the Pens this year. You better buy a pair of binoculars.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 12:51 AM

I liked using my binoculars watching you underachieving, overpaid humps score a whopping two goals in a four game series sweep last year.

      • whiskytango333 - Nov 2, 2013 at 7:38 AM

Thats still 2 more goals than the Flyers had in the playoffs last year….

Looks like its going to be 2 more goals than the Flyers will have in this year’s playoffs, as well.

      • cheesesteak75 - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:28 AM

      • buysamadrink - Nov 2, 2013 at 10:52 AM

You may want to stay away from the whole “overpaid” thing. At least for the next 13 years while your team is still paying Bryz to go away.

  19. stefet - Nov 2, 2013 at 12:05 AM

    Sucks for Philly

  20. bobhpine - Nov 2, 2013 at 12:32 AM

Picture Max Talbot drinking a craft beer at a Denver steakhouse, thanking The Lord to be away from this dumpster fire of a team/city.

    Good for you Max.

    • cheesesteak75 - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:29 AM

      Super star treatment!

  21. bobhpine - Nov 2, 2013 at 12:41 AM

Nah, was just the next guy in line. He’s likes getting bukkake.

  23. bobhpine - Nov 2, 2013 at 12:45 AM

The best part is Philly fans saying pens fans only care about the regular season. I mean, as opposed to only caring about the postseason, which Philly chokes in every year. Hey guy, 2009, 1992, 1991…much more recent than 1975. But if pens fans shouldn’t be talking about regular season accomplishments, and they clearly outnumber the flyers in cups, what exactly are the flyers supposed to be proud of?

Don’t answer…you probably don’t even understand the question. Enjoy steve Downie, haha,

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 12:52 AM

      Two goals…. 2013.

  24. hines86for6 - Nov 2, 2013 at 12:59 AM

are the Flyers the worst team in the league?

losing to a team with a losing record 7-0 would suggest so.

    • mcguenther13 - Nov 2, 2013 at 1:18 AM

Almost…..think my sabres still take the cake on worst team in the league tho

  25. bobhpine - Nov 2, 2013 at 1:07 AM

Oh geez now they might not make the playoffs. HAHAHAHA…and they definitely won’t win the cup.

  26. bobhpine - Nov 2, 2013 at 1:14 AM

Getting swept by the bruins sucked…but the previous two series victories were a lot of fun…not as much fun as when Jordan Staal, Pascal Dupuis, and Dan Bylsma brought the Stanley Cup to my office after the Pens won the cup in 09.

But keep digging dude. After that performance tonight (not to mention 1975), it’s almost admirable that you think you can say anything to offend me. Your team is a JOKE. HA

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 1:21 AM

2 goals…..2013. Brought the cup to your office….BWAAAAAAAHAAAAA. By cup you must of meant the one in their jockstraps lol. You’re the biggest damn tool ever. Go play with your poodles piney.

  27. pitpenguinsrulez - Nov 2, 2013 at 1:38 AM

2 goals? That’s more than what the one season wonder Claude Giroux has scored in the last 17 games.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Nov 2, 2013 at 2:36 AM

      2 goals……2013

      • hazlydose - Nov 2, 2013 at 2:47 AM

1 Goal …2013. As in the Rocket Richard lead a goalie has over your captain.

      • whiskytango333 - Nov 2, 2013 at 7:40 AM

0 playoff games…2013 (looks like 2014 as well)

  28. ducksk - Nov 2, 2013 at 8:45 AM

Two words. Gong show. Oops, 3. Pathetic.

  29. chiadam - Nov 2, 2013 at 9:08 AM

So, Philly got pantsed again, maturely decided the best thing to do was start a bunch of fights (since they can’t play hockey), and now two of their guys are hurt. Good. Next time, don’t blame the other team for being better than you.

  30. parkway4 - Nov 2, 2013 at 11:11 AM

Love reading all these pens “fans” comments. It doesnt matter how great the pens team is, the fans are all just a bunch of fair weather douchebags.

  31. northstarnic - Nov 2, 2013 at 12:21 PM

Good for the game, right boys? Time for this league to grow up.
