Video: Leafs’ Ashton boards Flames’ Smith

Oct 30, 2013, 10:35 PM EDT

Carter Ashton delivered the latest questionable hit, as the Toronto Maple Leafs youngster caught Calgary Flames defenseman Derek Smith from behind on Wednesday:

Ashton didn’t need to wait long for retribution, as Shane O’Brien immediately dropped the gloves with him (and bloodied him) after that hit.

Ashton received a two-minute minor for the hit along with matching fighting minors with O’Brien. The Flames made that power play count, as Matt Stajan scored seven minutes later. It might not be enough for the Flames to win, but should Ashton sit out for that hit?

How the hell is that only a 2 minute minor? These refs to need to be held more accountable!

Shanny will definitely take a couple looks at this one.

NHL is so far behind the times. Acts need to be suspended, not outcomes. If the player was hurt Ashton would get 5 games easy.

There needs to be more consistency for boarding calls. Double minor? 5min major if it draws blood maybe? I’ve seen bad ones like this get 2min, and soft ones get 5min majors and game misconducts. When they’re 5ft from the boards, that’s as dangerous as it gets.
