Video: PHT Extra, Olympic talk — the Americans are coming!

Oct 29, 2013, 5:52 PM EDT

In today’s edition of PHT Extra, Jason and I — two card-carrying, denim-wearing Canadians through and through — take a look at some terrifying developments in the rest of the world’s quest to steal our Olympic gold.

Specifically, we’re looking at Team USA.

This past week, a pair of American skaters — Ryan Kesler and Phil Kesselwere named NHL stars of the week. Kesler’s week was perhaps most impressive, rebounding from an injury-riddled 2013 campaign to look like the player that scored 41 goals and won the Selke in 2010-11 (or, as Jason so eloquently puts it, “the year Kesler won a bunch of awards n’ stuff.”)

We also talk about Seth Jones and his emergence in Nashville which, it should be noted, is being aided by a good ol’ Canadian boy in Shea Weber.

It’s one of the problems with trying to grow the game in the States. Soon there will be a time when most of the best players are Yankees instead of Canadians.

USA is still lacking an absolute superstar, I know they have Kane ect. but America needs a Crosby. Also I hope Seth jones has unreal career so he can maybe influence more African decents into the game, if African Americans played this sport, they would dominate it

What exactly would allow guys of African descent the ability to “dominate” hockey? Do they have some superpowers that reglur ol’ non-black fellas don’t? Kind of a silly statement to make.

Speed helps in hockey, jumping not so much.

    • withseidelinn - Oct 29, 2013 at 6:39 PM

      I highly doubt that

      • sunderlanding - Oct 31, 2013 at 1:54 PM

Why? They have more people, and more money to spend on sports. If hockey keeps becoming more popular it’s just a matter of time.

I can see our friends to the north not liking your comment much, but simple population difference will prove your point.

    • guitarhunterdude - Oct 30, 2013 at 9:49 AM

That time may be coming, but not any time soon. Most of the US is far enough south that hockey can’t be played outside, and until that changes it will just be a “rich kids” sport in those states. Ice time and gear are prohibitively expensive for a lot of people.

I’m picking USA to win gold, when do they pick the teams?

    • killerpgh - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:19 PM

I think Team USA will be announced during the Winter Classic.

    • chanceoffleury1 - Oct 29, 2013 at 7:19 PM

If I remember correctly, Team USA is being announced during/around the Winter Classic. I imagine that’s around the time when most teams will name their official rosters.

Get Jason Pominville on this team

  4. vanindeed - Oct 29, 2013 at 10:56 PM

Neither USA or Canada will win gold. Bigger ice is a different game. I predict Sweden over Russia
