Video: Matt Moulson already scores (twice!), but Sabres lose

Oct 28, 2013, 8:35 PM EDT

Matt Moulson scoring a goal on his first shot with the Buffalo Sabres doesn’t prove that he’ll thrive without John Tavares … but it certainly doesn’t hurt.

The 29-year-old did just that on Monday, scoring a nice one-timer goal off of assists from Tyler Ennis and Cody Hodgson against the Dallas Stars just 3:26 into tonight’s game:

If it weren’t for Moulson being a lefty (Thomas Vanek shoots right-handed), one could excuse Hodgson for feeling right at home with his new running mate, as Moulson is wearing the same No. 26 in Buffalo.

Update: Holy contract year, Moulson scored again, giving him two tallies with Buffalo and eight on the season.

Nice to see that each goal gives a taste of what Moulson can do: score them pretty and in the “dirty areas.”

Final update: Moulson’s two tallies weren’t enough, however, as Lindy Ruff won in his return to Buffalo 4-3.

Has a 2nd goal now too

Where are all those people who said he couldn’t score without John Tavares?

Moulson has played every year with Tavares and has been a 30 goal scorer since season one when Tavares was still developing and was just showing flashes of potential and has put up 30 when Tavares was broke out and started playing at a ppg pace. Where tavares had an effect on moulson was his assists and overall point production (48, 53, 69, then 44 in 47 games) which you wont see in buffalo. Its fair along those lines to say he get a lot of help as a result of Tavares but 30 goals is almost a forgone conclusion for him. I admit i am someone who is skeptical of him without a great player around him but lets be honest buffalo thinks highly of hodgson and ennis for their future and while not Tavares I think they are both solid players now with bright futures. I predict Moulson ends the year somewhere around 34/21/54 or along those lines (which would be his second lowest ppg total in the last 4 seasons)

I’ve not read anyone who has said this. Everything I’ve read so far is that he’d finally come into his own. The only thing I’ve been reading about is how stupid Garth Snow was for giving him up and a bunch of picks for essentially, a player who has the same talent and a ridiculous contract.

Buffalo will be sitting pretty if they can flip this guy at the deadline for some young pieces or more picks..

I can’t wait for all the comments if Vanek goes his 1st 3 games without scoring. Players sometimes struggle after their 1st time being traded.

Didn’t Steve Bernier score 2 goals in his first game as a Sabre too?

    • cantphaseme - Oct 28, 2013 at 9:25 PM

He did, but what is your point? Bernier has never scored over 15goals. He’s no Moulson.

    • jl9830 - Oct 28, 2013 at 9:42 PM

Welp, guess Moulson’s career is over in that case.

    • mrbgood315 - Oct 28, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Brad Boyes scored a goal in each of his first 2 games as a Sabre. And was never heard from again…ha. But keep it up Moulson! We need a little life around here as long as it doesn’t take us out of the running for the #1 overall pick.

i kinda hope moulson blows vanek’s numbers out of the water and lands with a contender and a fat extension at the deadline.

  7. egodz51 - Oct 28, 2013 at 10:12 PM

…just the next guy in line giving false hope to a gullible fan base that continues to support a team and ownership group that made big promises and completely failed to live up to the hype they created.

    • jl9830 - Oct 29, 2013 at 12:33 AM

Didn’t the Sabres win their division, like, three years ago? Poor you. How tough it must be to root for a team that goes three years without a division title!

Stop whining. You could be a fan of the Blue Jackets or Panthers.

Deadline trade: Canucks dump Booth, a young d-man and a 2nd rounder for Moulson??? Dare to dream…

  9. bgrillz - Oct 29, 2013 at 8:30 AM

This is what new Sabres do. Remember Steve Bernier? Remember Brad Boyes?
