Moulson’s agent says they’re ‘open-minded’ about Sabres’ plans

Oct 27, 2013, 9:40 PM EDT

It’s natural for people to gravitate toward the Thomas Vanek/New York Islanders side of Sunday’s blockbuster trade, but what about Matt Moulson‘s future with the Buffalo Sabres? The Buffalo News’ John Vogl reports that Moulson’s agent Wade Arnott said they’re listening … if the Sabres want to talk, that is.

The risk/reward factor with the Islanders is higher, but Moulson’s situation with Buffalo might be more dynamic. As Vogl and others point out, there’s nothing to guarantee that Buffalo wouldn’t try to flip Moulson for more assets.

Beyond that, there’s also the intriguing question of hockey nature vs. nurture: can Moulson really succeed without John Tavares? It would probably be unfair to judge the winger based on an abbreviated season without training camp on a dour team in such a scenario, but many will anyway.

(The team announced that they hope the 29-year-old will play for the Sabres as soon as Monday.)

Regardless, Buffalo already must feel pretty good about squeezing assets from a player who very well might have walked this summer. GM Darcy Regier told the Canadian Press’ Stephen Whyno that this deal – or something like it – has been brewing for some time.

“It was something we felt we had to do,” Regier said.

The tantalizing question, then, is what will they do next?

Wow, this is the best news I’ve heard for Buffalo in a while. Got quite a return for a guy who was not going to be playing for the Sabres next year.

This is still a good move by the Isles, a strong statement move. Folks must be forgetting how good of a player Vanek is. Tends to happen when you’re quarantined in Buffalo. Now he’ll get a shot with Tavares, that’ll be fun.

You obviously 1. have never been to Buffalo and 2. Have never seen Vanek play for any period of time.

Reiger- Trade him to the Rangers for Kreider, DelZotto and a bag of pucks. Please?

  4. arrooo - Oct 27, 2013 at 10:04 PM

Send Ryan miller to the isles too

    • trbowman - Oct 27, 2013 at 10:06 PM

They sure could use him. Nabokov really holds that team back, they could’ve won that first round playoff series against Pittsburgh with even above average goaltending. Poulin is even worse.

    • bullwinkle88 - Oct 28, 2013 at 7:03 AM

Sure…just give us Okposo, your 2014 2nd round pick, and your 2015 first round pick.

Miller will be there in the morning.

Oh no, let’s not get greedy. Just give us Tavares and another second rounder and you can have Miller. We will even throw in Drew Stafford and TWO bags of pucks (plus a few used jockstraps). {This is where you fall on the floor laughing hysterically} Hell, we will even give you Darcy for good measure, but we don’t want Snow back in return.

Miller can still be traded for a first rounder as well. Wouldnt be surprised if Mouldon is also traded and Buffalo gets more picks. This sounds like a fast rebuild by Buffalo

    • bullwinkle88 - Oct 28, 2013 at 7:04 AM

      Darcy knows what he’s doing!

      • mjw9326mjw9326 - Oct 28, 2013 at 9:28 AM

He sure does. He is sinking this team closer and closer to a team that can do marvels in Junior hockey. At the rate he is working, this team can’t even win in the AHL.

        McDavid 2015

Either Moulson gets flipped again, or he walks. No way any high-profile free agent willingly stays in Buffalo in the depths of yet another rebuild.

    • bullwinkle88 - Oct 28, 2013 at 7:05 AM

      Either way, the Sabres win.

      • jpelle82 - Oct 28, 2013 at 9:47 AM

agreed. sabres couldve taken this deal w/out moulson and been happy. snow got owned.

  7. michlight95 - Oct 27, 2013 at 10:23 PM

The isles have nothing else to give the sabres for miller. Maybe garth snow with give up Tavares next

    • mjw9326mjw9326 - Oct 28, 2013 at 9:30 AM

Works for me. Like I said, they can have Stafford in return. When Scott comes back in a few weeks, they can have him as well. For Tavares I would throw in Hodgson or Grigorenko. That would be addition by subtraction for Buffalo.

mike milbury nightmares creeping in just in time for halloween on the island.

No matter how bad things in your life are right now take a deep breath and thank your God that you’re not Matt Moulson. ‘I’ve been traded? Well, ok. As long as its not buff….’

Also. This means Steve “the pirate” Ott is now a full time captain. Yikes. Just yikes.

  10. terrier92 - Oct 28, 2013 at 11:15 AM

It would be a bad move to sign Moulson to a long term deal. They ought to trade him at deadline and get more picks. They could get a second and conditional forst rounder depending on how far team that got him went in playoffs. Buffalo needs a total rebuild and youth is the way to go. Miller ought to bring in a good haul as certainly there are plenty of teams that could use goaltending.
