Phoenix Coyotes forward Martin Hanzal will have a talk with the NHL about his hit on Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jeff Petry on Saturday night.

The league announced Hanzal will have a hearing on Monday over the elbow he connected with Petry at 13:42 of the first period during the Coyotes’ 5-4 win over the Oilers. Petry was rattled by the hit but stayed in the game. Hanzal was assessed a minor penalty for charging.

Hanzal does have a record for the league to consider. He was given a one-game suspension for boarding Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown during the 2012 playoffs.

this hit is deserving of a suspension no way you can travel the distance he did and then leap and head a player in the head. even if Petry was not taken out on stretcher Hanzal will be suspended .

No way this check should be reviewed. Hockey’s getting as bad as football now. Absolute joke.

here are the facts, he was called for charging, he left his feed, gave Petry a forearm to the head…. What did Hanzal do right?

Joey could you do me favor and stand up? That seat is muffling the sound while you are talking out of your ass.

In fairness to Hanzal the way that petry came bouncing back off the boards affected the way the hit went. Not saying he’s innocent because that was the right penalty to call last night.

This shouldn’t be anything. He wasn’t targeting anything and seriosly… what is Hanzal supposed to do in that situation? They’re both racing in the same direction then suddenly Petry does a U-turn into on-coming traffic. Are NHL players supposed to have Jedi reflexes now too? Petry should have known better than to do something that dumb too. He knew Hanzal was right behind him.

It is about the same as the Edler hit on Hertl. Edler was making a play for the puck and his shoulder came in contact with Hertl.s skidlid and we all know the rest of the story.
