Pittsburgh has sent a pair of forwards — Chris Conner and Harry Zolnierczyk — to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL, the club announced on Wednesday.

The pair received spot duty over the last week. Zolnierczyk appeared in three contests, Conner two and, while neither hit the scoresheet, Conner did average over 10 minutes per game in the 160th and 161st games of his NHL career.

The pair were sent back to WBS as a few injured Penguins appear on the verge of getting healthy. Forward Matt D’Agostini is back to practicing fully, but can’t be taken off IR until this weekend. Defenseman Kris Letang skated alongside partner Rob Scurderi at even strength and Paul Martin on the team’s top power-play unit during Wednesday’s practice, and appears as though he’s close to getting back into action.

Pittsburgh will also soon have to make a roster decision on 19-year-old defenseman Olli Maatta, to either keep him at the NHL level for the remainder of the year or ship him back to his junior club, the OHL’s London Knights.

Any word on if Zolnierczyk left Sidney and Geno his home porno collection?

    I believe Maatta is staying

Not that simple…..He would lose a year of eligibility!

Not how simple? All he said is he believes hes staying. I do too he appears ready and dont think he would be challenged in junior and may develop bad habits like trying to force offense. A lot of sources inside the team hav said hes staying. Letang scuderi orpik martin niskanen maata somebody name me a better top 6 before you hit the thumbs down button

So do you move Bortuzzo, Martin, or Niskanen? Bortuzzo can’t sit all year, he’s still developing. Niskanen MAY be able to be moved…tough year for it.

If the Pens want to take a risk, they might be able to move Martin. I’d hate to see them keep both Martin and Letang after Letang’s new contract kicks in. But then there’s the issue of not having a left shooting quarterback on the power play. Unless you put Maatta on the power play (which they did last game, by the way…interesting). OR do you try to move Orpik? His contract is up and Borts might be able to cover it! (that sucks to think about).

The obvious answer is to send Maatta back this year – but gad I hope they don’t. He’s been great to watch…that defensive stockpile is now starting to produce the inevitable questions…..

he has showed he belongs at the NHL level what progression will he make playing down

    • hockey412 - Oct 24, 2013 at 8:20 AM

It’s more a matter of either 1) finding a rotation where everyone gets time (and if so, how much time), or 2) moving someone.
