Less than a week after scoring his first NHL goal, Josh Leivo is headed back to the minors.

On Wednesday, the Leafs announced they’d sent Leivo back to the AHL Marlies, presumably in a move to free up a roster spot for David Clarkson, who returns from his 10-game suspension on Friday.

Leivo, 20, played his way into the Toronto mix after a solid preseason and six quality regular-season contests with the club. He played a career-high 13:45 against Minnesota on Oct. 15, then scored his aforementioned first career goal against Carolina the next game out.

In Tuesday night’s big win — a 4-2 victory over the red-hot Ducks — Leivo assisted on Dion Phaneuf‘s second period goal, but finished with just 6:45 of ice time.

    Dear Toronto Fans,

    Clarkson will prove his worth.

As a Devil’s fan my entire life (and living inToronto for the past 15+ years), you will see that Clarkson is the type of player that will fit right into the mix. Carlyle expects to put together a team that grinds, and pushes hard each shift…that is exactly what you will get out of Clarkson.

All the best Dave on Friday.

You are missed by the Devils.

That’s a big part of the reason they brought him in. His play influences a lot of the more finesse guys to get into the dirtier areas. This guy is almost like a less talented Mike Richards (queue the thumbs down), only because he plays every shift like a grinder. Hits, fights, chirps, but still has a solid offensive ability to make him more valuable. I KNOW Mike Richards is a significantly superior player, but there are similarities in their styles. Add Kulemin and Fraser back int he mix as well and this team could start to get very good.

Richards and Clarkson look similar because they both Lear ned the same aggressive style from playing in the Kitchener Rangers system. The Ranger graduate a ton of solid NHL players

Good point, never knew Clarkson played for the Rangers.
