Video: Ducks’ Penner needs help off ice

Oct 20, 2013, 9:41 PM EDT

Anaheim Ducks winger Dustin Penner needed help getting off the ice and to the locker room after what many believe was a high hit by Dallas Stars forward Ryan Garbutt.

SBNation passes along video of the hit:

Garbutt, 28, was not penalized for that check. It’s too early to know what kind of injury Penner, 31, suffered, but he doesn’t seem to have a long history of concussion issues. Also from the “unfortunate that it’s a silver lining” department: he didn’t need a stretcher to leave the ice, which has been a disturbingly frequent occurrence in the NHL this past week.

Penner has had a rough early reunion with the Ducks, becoming a healthy scratch and earning some derision from head coach Bruce Boudreau. He was just starting to make good on his potential by adding even more beef to the sizable Corey PerryRyan Getzlaf combo, so that adds an extra bit of frustration if this is a serious issue.

Los Angeles News Group’s Elliott Teaford points out that Kyle Palmieri is now getting time with Perry and Getzlaf.

Garbutt left his feet…”launched” into Penner. He traveled a good distance, at speed, to do so. 3-5 games in my opinion, as it definitely resulted in an injury.

He was rushing into the play off the bench. He tried to ‘launch’ to get out of the way. A bad shift change caused a rushed play which caused an accidental hit in open ice. First rule in hockey is to keep your head up, maybe if Penner didn’t think he was alone in the slot for some reason, the hit would’ve easily been avoidable. Garbutt shouldn’t be suspended for another players lack of sense.

You are out of your mind! He targeted Penner’s head…no other reason to leave your feet. He turned his skates into the hit and jumped upward, into the body. Even a homer has to see that!

And for the record, he was on the opposite side of the ice, away from the benches.

        einjzmolf, you are an idiot….

His another rule for you einzmolf, don’t target the head when you throw a shoulder into another player. Head shots are not permitted.

Accidental hit? You blind son? He clearly targeted Penner. Launched himself and made the hit. He could’ve let-off if he wanted to. I’ll be surprised if this will be ignored by the league.

Garbutt’s invitation to the league office is already on his voicemail.

Nailed it! He’ll get at least 5 games… hopefully more.

He skates straight at him immediately after leaving the box. A story to be told there.
