Lamoriello backs DeBoer amidst Devils’ winless start

The New Jersey Devils have yet to win a game this season, going 0-3-4 through their first seven contests.

A bad start, sure, but not enough for Lou Lamoriello to push the panic button.

The Devils GM gave head coach Peter DeBoer and his staff a vote of confidence on Friday, saying they — along with the Devils players — are trying their hardest to bump the slump.

“The coaching staff is doing everything they can,” Lamoriello told the New Jersey Star-Ledger. “So are the players. They’re working at it. We have to be more consistent in certain areas.”

DeBoer confirmed he had the GM’s backing.

“Lou’s been very positive with what we’re doing,” he explained. “No one is happy we’re losing.”

The Devils are suggesting a brutal opening road stretch — they played six of their first seven away from Prudential — is a big reason for the early woes. Problem is, things aren’t about get any easier on the travel front as the Devils will play five of their next nine on the road as well.

(If you’re wondering when the schedule gets favorable for New Jersey, look at the late stages of the season. The Devils have a five-game homestand from Mar. 18-27, and play 10 of their final 14 games at Prudential.)

While DeBoer’s job appears to be safe, this is the Devils we’re talking about. Lamoriello can be unpredictable and has displayed an itchy trigger finger before, eschewing the ideas of “staying the course” and “sticking to the process” should losses pile up too high — like they did under John MacLean, who was fired after just nine wins in 33 games to start the 2010-11 season.

For Lamoriello, it’s all about victories.

“We didn’t win and the bottom line is winning,” he said following a 5-2 defeat in Ottawa. “There’s no question.”

I was the first one screaming for DeBoer to be fired last season during our 6 game losing streak, but after yesterday, it is clear it’s not his fault this season. Our goaltending has been terrible especially Brodeur. He showing clearly that it’s time for him to retire. Let Cory get consecutive starts so he can find his stride, then we might win something.

Isn’t fair to the team for Brodeur to just keep milking his career. Should have hung em up when they acquired Schneider.

Cory hasn’t won either. It’s purely Brodeur’s fault that not one “professional” can score in a 6 round shootout vs the Islanders. It’s easy to lay blame on Brodeur.

Fact it, he stood on his head for the Islander game. How many odd man rushes can he expect to bail them out of?

The defense is below the joke level.

They are clearly out of shape.
They are clearly unaccountable for their mistakes.
      They are old.
      They are slow.

ALL ON DEBOER! He keeps them playing and they keep getting worse. I want him out as fast as possible. I want a new coach who will hold players accountable for their laziness and lack of interest.

DeBoer has clearly checked out since he lost Kovy last year.

What pisses me off the most is, this stupid joke of management is more concerned with their own fanbase offending the other team than they are about their own team offending their own fanbase. Change the goal song F’n A-HOLES!!! cause thats what’s clearly more important.

The Rangerws are gonna have a field day with Slavador and Volchenkov screenig our own goalie, while Zajac and Henrique play hot potato with the puck.

no… with the rangers luck, you guys are going to get your first win in blow-out fashion. i can already feel it coming.

The Devils have made one trip to the Finals in over 10 years. They used to be great, and so was Lou. The record gets worse and worse. Players keep running away to other teams and leagues. They only made it out of the first round 2x and went to the final round once. They missed the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years, and are likely to miss it again this year. He already lost a prospect to waivers because he wasn’t happy sending a player down who had an nhl salary. Someone that nobody would’ve picked up. No youth has developed correctly in the last 5 years except Henrique who had one good season and sucked the last 2. Not one of his last 5 first round picks have made the nhl. All of his future goaltenders are garbage, which is why he got Schneider for basically 2 years before he too leaves. All the coaches lately have either quit, been fired or retired.

Lou had a great career. But it’s time for him to retire. He gets worse and worse each year.

      Awww…someone beat me to it…

  3. buckeye044 - Oct 18, 2013 at 2:21 PM

It’s not DeBoer’s fault, he’s dealing with the hand Lou gave him.

    • 950003cups - Oct 18, 2013 at 2:37 PM

Lou also gave him a bunch of young talent that he sent down or benched.

      It’s time to BENCH DEBOER!!!!!!!

    • nj666 - Oct 18, 2013 at 3:42 PM

it is deboers fault, he is hindering the development of the young defenders. Hes the one who is playing marty more than schneider. Hes the one that clearly doesn’t have this team in shape…

A vote of confidence? From Lou Lamoriello? For DeBoer’s sake they had better beat the Rangers tomorrow night, otherwise I think he’ll be unemployed by Monday morning.

    • 950003cups - Oct 18, 2013 at 2:38 PM

he should be unemployed from last night. If I was Josh Harris, I would have left him in Ottawa

      • devilsarethebest - Oct 18, 2013 at 2:52 PM

Last night the Devils put 42 shots on goal. The difference? Anderson played very well while Brodeur looked like he was on a Caribbean vacation.

      • nj666 - Oct 18, 2013 at 3:43 PM

harris is too busy talking down to the fan base to worry about the actual on ice product.

  5. Whooten Anit - Oct 18, 2013 at 3:57 PM

I blame Gary Glitter. The Devils used Rock and Roll Part II for years with great success. They won during this year’s pre-season with it and won. Regular season comes, the goal song is changed and the Devils keep losing.

On an unrelated note, if Sweet Lou doesn’t dress him as a pink slip, DeBoer should be Charlie Brown for Halloween.

The best quote from an otherwise awful movie. I went around for years saying it and couldn’t even remember where I heard it from.

  7. thejrod2006 - Oct 18, 2013 at 5:44 PM

The biggest problem with the team right now is DeBoer. Constant line and lineup changes. Blind devotion to veterans who are awful. There is no good reason other than a sense of sentimentality to continue to play Brodeur over Schneider….Schneider is supposedly the future, so can we get him consecutive starts? Or are you trying to piss him off before he bails in FA in 2015? Volchenkov should’ve been benched a long time ago and Peter Harrold should not be playing over Mark Fayne. Adam Larsson won’t learn anything about playing in the NHL if he’s sitting in the press box every other day….either play him every day and let him go through the growing pains or send him down to Albany. The lines themselves….can he leave them alone for a few games and try to let the guys develop some chemistry by playing with each other. Doesn’t know when to call timeouts….has the team totally unprepared for last night’s Ottawa game where they’re down 2-0 immediately and are spending the rest of the time playing catchup (and they’re down because Marty is shot). These are basic lineup issues that are easily correctable.

Lou also needs to take a hit here….he put this old, lousy roster together and kept the pick after the Cup run….now we won’t have what could wind up being a Top 3 pick. That is a firable offense in and of itself.

Only 7 games in teams hit slumps the devils hot theirs early I see good to come a lot of new guys playing together starting to click now just need to get over the hump and get that first win. Lou is the best GM in sports if he believes in the coaching staff then the devils will be fine
