Report: Oilers, Sabres working on major trade

Oct 17, 2013, 10:55 AM EDT

Ryan Miller AP

Could the Sabres and Oilers be on the verge of a major trade?

Well, you didn’t hear that from us. But you did hear it from Buffalo News columnist Bucky Gleason:

And just so you know, there was talk Wednesday afternoon that the Sabres were working on a deal with Edmonton that would send Ryan Miller or Thomas Vanek and possibly both to the Oilers in a package that would bring Nail Yakupov and more to Buffalo. Whether it actually happens is another story. But as it stood Wednesday, the two sides had considered, or were considering, a major swap.

Miller is in the final year of his contract. The Oilers wouldn’t make the deal unless they could convince him to sign a contract extension. Edmonton is a great hockey town. The Oilers are on the rise. They could be a goaltender away from getting back into contention.

If you’re skeptical, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Especially about the potential for Miller to sign a contract extension with the Oilers when he could become an unrestricted free agent this summer. There’s always a knee-jerk negative reaction to the suggestion a star player — especially a non-Canadian one — would choose to live in Edmonton.

Oh, and FYI:

At the very least, it’s a fun rumor.

Miller, by the way, will get the start tonight when the Sabres host the Canucks.

The Miller part makes sense, but Vanek does not, especially considering I highly doubt he would re-sign there. Shouldn’t the Oilers be getting some better defensemen or a long term goalie. This rumor just screams fantasy rumor.

Maybe Miller a player and/or prospect for Yakupov. Buffalo needs young scoring forwards and Edmonton needs a goalie. Yakupov is perfect for buffalo if they’re rebuilding. Also the Oilers have enough scoring wingers: Hall, Eberle, Perron, Hemsky.

I was buying this story until I saw Vanek. Why would he be included?

    • travishenryskid - Oct 17, 2013 at 11:14 AM

      Why wouldn’t he?

      • mrpinkca - Oct 17, 2013 at 11:28 AM

Because Edmonton has plenty of scoring wingers.

    • jcmeyer10 - Oct 17, 2013 at 12:36 PM

Maybe for leverage in another trade unless I am missing something from the CBA.

Doesnt darcy hate the oilers, since there the reason for vaneks contract? Also, vanek is basing his free agency decision on best chance to win. Edmonton is just as bad as buffalo

    • thesportsjudge - Oct 17, 2013 at 12:37 PM

The article doesn’t say Edm would have to sign Vanek long term, only Miller.

    This is pretty funny actually.

  5. buddysguys - Oct 17, 2013 at 11:50 AM

    FAT CHANCE.

  6. longcutskolvikes - Oct 17, 2013 at 11:57 AM

Edmonton has to be good soon, right?

  7. hockey412 - Oct 17, 2013 at 11:59 AM

Just go get Bryz for gad’s sake.

  8. wingz101 - Oct 17, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Why would the oilers make this deal anyway?

If I am them I am looking at adding a young up-and-coming goaltender and possibly a defenseman that can make Justin Schultz look adequate while playing defense. Not that I would want my Wings to do it but the Oilers should be looking at guys like Petr Mrazek who was a standout on the AHL Griffins’ Calder Cup Champs and who has looked good when called upon in the NHL. He’s just 22.

Basically get a young goalie that can grow with your young team. Forget about a 30-something guy that is bitter about losing and who could divide the locker room.

Most of all they really need to add some defensive minded forwards and defensemen. Their best guys have no clue how to play defense and maybe even zero desire to do so. Worse for them, couple of times I have seen them on TV their new ‘hot’ coaching hire has had a “WTF is going on” expression come accross his face at least once per period. Not a good sign.

I think they were hoping Dubynk would be that up-and-coming goalie. I think they’re so loaded with young, productive offensive talent, that they’re looking for a goalie that will bring them closer to playoff contention. By trading for a proven guy like Miller, though older, they’re getting a still solid veteran. Getting a proven goaltender should be a step forward, where waiting for another goalie to develop may only prolong their time at the bottom of the standings.

Sabres already have a lazy Russian, why would they want another?

  10. malvaren18 - Oct 17, 2013 at 12:52 PM

Come on Edmonton desperately needs this trade, I hope is true , while your at it get rid of Hemsky, Hall instead of yakupov he has more hart then Hall

    • comeonnowguys - Oct 17, 2013 at 2:24 PM

Yes, please trade away Hall instead of Yakupov. That’s a great deal.

      Signed,
      13 Western Conference teams

Bet Vancouver tonight and bet the over. Miller’s about to lay a rotten goose egg: “See, Oilers, I just can’t beat those damn Canucks – the twins roast me every time. Better find someone else!!”

  12. mega1480 - Oct 17, 2013 at 1:59 PM

Can we just trade the disappointing Russian’s straight up?

  13. wmsshapiro - Oct 17, 2013 at 3:00 PM

You can’t be serious Buffalo wouldn’t you want a little more like a draft pick goalie or both. I would. If don’t accept anything less than we are playing with house money.

  14. millertime1101 - Oct 17, 2013 at 3:02 PM

oilers Vanek yeah right they would be crazy unless they get 2 first round pick money and a player

  15. Windmiller4 - Oct 17, 2013 at 3:40 PM

I figure if this trade were to happen it would be something like LaBarbra, and Yakupov for Miller, although his NTC kind of puts a stop to the talk unless he can be convinced to waive it. If i’m Regier i’d be looking to trade Myers and for Yakupov instead. Myers is stumbling and a change of scenery might do him good. Plus outside of Vanek the Sabres have no scoring, Yakupov could help them get more than a goal a game. Just my opinion though

  16. shamu1the1whale - Oct 17, 2013 at 3:47 PM

I was kinda hoping the Pens could get Miller…

    • Windmiller4 - Oct 17, 2013 at 4:08 PM

But why would the Sabres want to trade Miller to a team that’s in their conference? Assuming he was traded then Fluery would go to the sabres, and i doubt the Pens would want to trade him to a team in their conference as well. Plus i think the Sabres are gonna look for Enroth to take the reins and Hackett to back up once Miller is traded, so theyre not gonna be looking for a starting goalie in return. Sorry but Miller to the pens isn’t gonna happen

  17. billsin20xx - Oct 17, 2013 at 9:02 PM

PLEASE don’t let Regier make any trades – REPLACE him and get a GM with a winning vision, not a vision where we just rebuild another loser every few years!
