Flyers slump reminds Giroux of 2010 playoffs, pre-comeback versus Bruins

We already wrote about the importance for the Philadelphia Flyers of tonight’s home game against rival Pittsburgh, but just to add to that, following are a few quotes from various key figures:

Per, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma: “I don’t look at the Flyers’ record as an indication of the quality of opponent or what we’re going to see [Thursday] at all. They do have some injuries, but they have key players in, good players in, a special teams that is good and dangerous with what they bring. That’s what we expect from them. Especially early on in the season, when you get off to a 1-3, 1-4, whatever it is, the limelight is on you but I still think they’re a very good team and that’s what we’re focused on, not what their record is.”

Per CSN Philly, Pens captain Sidney Crosby: “You have to prepare even more for a desperate team. You don’t look at the record. You switch scenarios and they could have won five in a row. It doesn’t matter. They are going to come into this desperate. They always start well here.”

Again from CSN Philly, Flyers captain Claude Giroux: “What’s going on right now makes me think of when we played Boston in the [2010] playoffs. We were down 3-0, but we were talking to ourselves and we were like, ‘How the hell are we down 3-0? We should be up 3-0.’ We just stayed with it and came back and won the series.”

That last comment from Giroux, who has just two assists in seven games, was particularly interesting. The Flyers did play a better game Tuesday against Vancouver, but some bad luck…

…and at least one instance of poor defending…

…resulted in a 3-2 loss.

Hope this kid can get his game back on track

Yeah Claude this team reminds me of the most successful Flyers team of the last decade too.

Am I wrong in thing there are only 2 players currently on the active roster from that 2009-10 team that came back and beat the Bruins? Just Giroux and Timonem ( and Hartnell Pronger both being injuried). That’s a lot of player turnover for a team that went to the SCF’s just 4 years ago. Maybe that’s the problem….

It is the problem I think they knew that once pronger was hurt they had to drastically make changes. I think thats’ also why holmgren hasn’t been fired. Had pronger not been hurt in a freak accident, he’d built a really good team.

Pronger is a massive loss. You unexpectedly lose an all-star/future hall of gamer and it’s going to be a huge hole to fill. but yes it was a team built for success. An injury like that can hurt q franchise

yeah they traded their core after that, richards and carter, and let bobrovsky walk away 2 years ago.

Sadly Coburn was here ..The sad part is he is still here….Also Emery was still a Flyers then as well…Though he played no playoff games!…But that completes the list!

The loss of leadership in Mike Richards and Chris Pronger is something that can’t be understated. That’s not to indite Giroux in any way, but when you lose players like that it’s very hard to make up for. That’s probably the major difference between those two teams. This Flyers team certainly has talent, but we’ll see if they’re mentally tough enough to handle this adversity.

I didn’t realize this douche canoe was still around.

Hey bob, I’m going to the game tonight and sitting in corporate box, should I brag about it on some anonymous comments section?

Im a huge Penguins but I live in Flyers country and when I’m not watching the Penguins I’m watching the Flyers and I have to disagree with Giroux this team is really no where close to the 2010 team.

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Oct 17, 2013 at 7:37 PM

You mean the team that limped into the playoffs on the last goal of the season? Its hockey boys anything can happen we’re not even 10 games into the season. Take a deep breath and relax. Flyers are off to a crappy start but they’ll come together soon.
