Video: Dan Boyle leaves ice on stretcher after hit from behind

Oct 15, 2013, 8:27 PM EDT

The San Jose Sharks – St. Louis Blues game is already off to a very rough start on Tuesday, as star defenseman Dan Boyle was taken off the ice on a stretcher after a hit from behind by Maxim Lapierre.

Here’s video of the check:

The NBC SN telecast believes that Boyle’s jaw made contact with the boards. At least one observer believes that Boyle, 37, lifted his hand to signal to the Sharks bench that he was conscious.

NBC Bay Area shared this photo of Boyle being taken off the ice on a stretcher:

This all happened moments ago, so it’s too early to know about Boyle’s condition. PHT will update when more information is available.

Lapierre received a game misconduct, and a series of fights resulted from the fray. As you can see, he wasn’t the only player who was reprimanded:

Dirty hit by a dirty player

    • stevedurbano - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:38 PM

He’s going to get at least 10 games for that. Dirty play is stupid play, I just hope Boyle isn’t as badly hurt as it looks.

    • ethanmacleod1685 - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:40 PM

Boyle is irreplaceable, what are we gonna do now? Who’s our offensive defenceman? That stupid french idiot just ruined our season ! We’re not going anywhere without Boyle or a decent puck moving defenceman

      • jovocop2112 - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:43 PM

Hope Boyle is okay – that said couldn’t have happened to a nicer team. I hope you are absolutely right and that the Sharks totally crumble with out him. Maybe Thornton can jack-off from the point and ejaculate with enough force to move the puck

      • imleftcoast - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:48 PM

Thumbs down for thinking about the standings, but I do love the Joe Thorton rooster joke.

      • lordfletcher - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:49 PM

you’re worried about the sharks season and Boyle is potentially worried about livelihood

    • ethanmacleod1685 - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:41 PM

I think it’s just his jaw but who knows at this point

  2. sjawesome - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:35 PM

That didn’t look good. I didn’t see Boyle move when he was laying on the ice

  3. sjsharks66 - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:35 PM

Very dirty hit. Boyle will be out for a long time.

  4. esracerx46 - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:37 PM

Hoping all the best to Boyle. Havent seen the hit so Im not going to comment. Maxim Lapierre however is a punk. Him and Torres are of the same ilk.

I am fuming, this is why we need fighting to police hits like this. Man oh man, I hope lappy gets what’s coming too him. If I see him on the street, ill do it myself. Arghhhhhh I’m fuming !

    • joey4id - Oct 15, 2013 at 11:23 PM

Fighting is in the game, yet this hit still happened. So much for your moronic theory.

      • ethanmacleod1685 - Oct 15, 2013 at 11:27 PM

Yh my comment is totally irrelevant relating to all the recent debates about weather fighting should banned or not. C’mon man, wake up !

  6. ufostomper - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:40 PM

I’m not getting that box score how did 5 guys from stl get fighting majors and only 1 from sjs were they fighting each other?

  7. sjtorpitt - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:46 PM

    Damn it.
It’s a good thing our other Dmen have stepped up Offensively. But none can bring what Boyle does on a regular basis.

  8. imleftcoast - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:46 PM

I hope Boyle is okay. Those hits seem very dangerous. Shanahan should have given Chimera at least a game today for his hit from behind. It sends a message even if Chimera’s hit wasn’t as bad as this one sounds.

  9. sjtorpitt - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:55 PM

Lol Jovocop: f—ing fggt go die in a hole. Talking sh*t from moms basement, classy guy you are.

    • sabatimus - Oct 15, 2013 at 11:40 PM

      The slur isn’t necessary.

    • jl9830 - Oct 16, 2013 at 12:20 AM

You’re about as bad as he is for using that completely inappropriate term.

  10. sjsharks66 - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:55 PM

What upset me even more is that the NBC announcers said Burns should have gotten 5 minutes for his board on Morrow. No denying it was a board but to compare it to the one on Boyle is absurd!

    • apola22 - Oct 16, 2013 at 9:47 AM

He was helped off the ice as well…sharks were dirty last night and got away with a lot

  11. ethanmacleod1685 - Oct 15, 2013 at 8:59 PM

I will say, class act by the blues fans clapping for Boyle. That wouldn’t happen in Vancouver

    • ethanmacleod1685 - Oct 15, 2013 at 10:01 PM

Well, looks like vancouvers only fan disagrees

  12. mclovinhockey - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:01 PM

    God damn it Kaleta!!!
    …. Oops wrong page.
Man I hope he is alright

  13. storminator16 - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:02 PM

LOL, Kaleta got 10 games. Maxim Lapierre, you are done, son. Freaking finally.

  14. btlpper68 - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:03 PM

Why everyone says st luois is dirty WHATA joke WHATA f—– in joke

  15. ethanmacleod1685 - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:05 PM

Can’t wait for Torres to come back to f lappyfucjineirre (whatever his name is) up !

  16. drewzducks - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:11 PM

I’m shocked a player who had spent his entire career with such upstanding franchises as Montreal and Vancouver could stoop to such thuggery. Had to have picked this up when they had all those heated battles with those meanies the Bruins.

  17. sabatimus - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:30 PM

Boyle turned his back to Lapierre…which he had to do in order to chip the puck to his teammate behind the net. But just watch Shanahan screw this one up and say it was Boyle’s fault.

    • sabatimus - Oct 15, 2013 at 11:41 PM

I have a feeling that people are only reading the first 4 words of my post.

  18. bcsteele - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:32 PM

I was against him coming here. I’ve always had a problem with his game. We’re more than deep enough without him and have enough “clean, tough” (you know what I mean) players without him. That was absolutely out of this world…

A very, very loyal Blues fan.

P.S. My thoughts and prayers are with Dan and his family. Blues fans don’t stand for this.

    • stevedurbano - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:46 PM

      I totally agree.

  19. skr213 - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:36 PM

For those with a short memory, Lapierre got suspended for 4 games back in 2010 for almost the exact same thing against a Sharks forward. I’d love to work at the hotel the Blues stay at next time they play in SJ – let’s just say, he’d get a nice surprise in his hotel bed.

    • stevedurbano - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:46 PM

For your sake, I hope you can get that job. I’m sure it would be a blessing.

  20. jhaegs - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:58 PM

Good to see our fans represent like that by the applause. They acted like it was their player that went down. Not sure what will happen to Lapierre, but I’d be more than happy to see Porter or Cracknell come back up and replace him. I haven’t been impressed, and we all saw what the CPR line did last year. Best wishes to Boyle, good game SJ, and LGB!

  21. apola22 - Oct 16, 2013 at 12:12 AM

Terrible hit I get that and I hope he is okay. That being said did anyone happen to see the boarding on Jackman and morrow tonight that both went pretty much untouched by the officiating? Morrow was helped off the ice too but nothing. Refs were terrible tonight.

    • comeonnowguys - Oct 16, 2013 at 9:00 AM

Jackman got boarded? Little sympathy here.

A few years ago, before the Blues started getting some skill, the Blues’ strategy to stay/get back into games was to run at players and Jackman was one of the main people doing it. Worst case: they knocked somebody out of the game. Best case: they knocked somebody out of the game AND drew an instigator from the the other team.
