Sabres say the right things about not quitting

After Monday’s 2-1 loss to Minnesota, the Buffalo Sabres are now 0-6-1 in seven games. They’ve scored at a league-low rate of just one goal per contest. Their top goalie Ryan Miller and most dangerous forward Thomas Vanek will see their contracts expire next summer. Despite all of this doom and gloom, the Sabres insist they’re not quitting.

Publicly, at least.

Outspoken and controversial pest Steve Ott said all the right things to the team’s Web site.

“You have to continue to push forward,” Ott said. “There’s no give up.”

Brian Flynn – Buffalo’s lone goal scorer from Monday – echoed such thoughts.

“We can’t get down,” Flynn said. “It’s a long season.”

That might be the key phrase: a long season. It could mean that Buffalo has plenty of time to bounce back – one point and all – or it could mean that the Sabres and their fans are in for months of suffering.

Boo’s, half empty arena by the 3rd period…. Time for Pegula,Regier and Rolston all to go. One hot mess in buffalo

    • timmyp716 - Oct 15, 2013 at 6:19 AM

They warned us about this….if your not happy don’t watch. Pegula has to fix the mess Golisano left.. bad contracts for average playersand bringing actually talent in. Who would you prefer? Hecht, gerbe? They’re doing the best they can

      • leninthebuff - Oct 15, 2013 at 6:57 AM

And who gave those contracts out…Marcy Darcy did (no lets blame Galisano, yeah right) and yet Ruff is axed and Regier survives and is not held accountable. They hire a coach who was never a NHL player or even a NHL assistant coach, heck he never even played in the AHL and they never even sniff at Roy or Eakins, you know why because Rolston is a yes man and Roy and Eakins have strong personalities. Pegula should bring in a guy like Rick Dudley to turn things around.

Talk about bad contracts…look no further then Leino and Myers and who gave those contracts out Galisano no Regier and Pegula. Do a little homework before blaming everyone but those who did and are still causing the problem.

      • buddysguys - Oct 15, 2013 at 2:07 PM

you cant be serious with the Golisano comment?????? Name one bad contract he handed out???? Leino nope Pegula, Myers nope Pegula, Hodgson nope Pegula, Erhoff nope Pegula. He may have paid Stafford once and Connoly once but thats not nearly as bad as what has happened since he left. If your going to balme Golisano for anything blame him for not spending money.

  2. gmenfan1982 - Oct 14, 2013 at 11:33 PM

Really bad team. Lackluster defense, Minnesota camped out in offensive zone all night. Buff had no offense to speak of. Miller will be on trade block before ya know it.

    • bruceleroy1 - Oct 15, 2013 at 12:44 AM

Uhhh I think Miller has been on the trade block for a while and we all knew it…….except you I guess.

    • leninthebuff - Oct 15, 2013 at 7:42 AM

They talk about puck control and it’s easy to see why it happens to the Sabres…our defense is made up of a bunch of cupcakes..Myers is 6’8 and watch how smurfs outmuscle him for the puck, he spends more time on the backside behind the net when it comes to fighting for the puck. Weber is -9 and all he sits for is one game, why isn’t McNabb up here to get NHL experience…he can’t do any worse and at least he plays physical. The forwards aren’t any help either with blind passes in thier own zone.

To the guy who said if you don’t like it don’t watch well if you are a passionate fan you watch no matter what but it doesn’t mean you have to like what you are seeing. This team is the laughing stock of the NHL and if not for Miller and Enroth imagine what it would be like.

  3. earpaniac - Oct 15, 2013 at 12:57 AM

They absolutely have to trade everything of value. It’s obvious they are in rebuild mode, or should be, and half rebuilds don’t work.

    • pxland - Oct 15, 2013 at 1:36 AM

Does anyone think they would put up Myers for the right return?

      • anthj99 - Oct 15, 2013 at 2:22 AM

Ha, of course anyone, but Darcy would trade him for a bag of pucks, but Darcy wants a kings ransom for any of his players and none of them are worth a crap considering their ridiculous contracts and underperforming attitudes. This team blows and it starts with Darcy. He really screwed up this organization and he’s been given the reigns to continue his handy work. I hope they lose every single game handily until that POS is fired. I think the players will continue to play that way as well until he’s gone.

      • buddysguys - Oct 15, 2013 at 2:09 PM

who wants a 6’8 d man that trips over his own sjkates and cant play D? They can have him if they want him.

  4. bullwinkle88 - Oct 15, 2013 at 5:38 AM

Nothing here is happening that is not part of the plan. Of course the Sabres suck. They’re supposed to! Like the poster said above, a rebuild has to be 100%. A half-hearted attempt won’t work.

In order to be 100% there will have to be a lot of pain. It’s not like this sort of thing is new to the league…look at the histories of the Capitals, Penguins, Blackhawks, and even Bruins (in the 60’s). They all stunk up the joint at some point in their history.

This will go on for another year or two. Get used to it. Also get used to seeing Sam Reinhart and possible McDavid playing for the Sabres!

That’s something I’m going to look forward to!

    • leninthebuff - Oct 15, 2013 at 7:27 AM

BW88…I have said the samething you are saying on numerous boards, those two players (Reinhardt and McDavid) are no brainers at this point, you and I could make those picks as GM so even Regier can’t mess that up, right? lol

He has not been a great judge of talent and contracts otherwise…signing Leino and not waiting on Myers who was not playing to his first year in the NHL when he signed his new contract is unexcusable. We are casual fans in comparsion to GM’s and I will admit I was happy with the drafting of Grigorenko but in hindsight there had to be a reason why he dropped like he did and to this point we are seeing why, I guess it was the need at the center position that prompted that selection.

I will give the devil his due as DR is good for his trades…Gaustad and a 4th for a 1st which turns out to be Girgensons and Pominville and a 4th for Larsson, Hackett, Zadorov and a 2nd this year which won’t be decided as a good/bad trade for at least another 2-3 yrs but it does look good on paper. I’m sure he will rake it in when he trades Miller and Vanek.

  5. comeonnowguys - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:11 AM

I’d be surprised if Ryan Miller is with the team come New Year’s. He was the only reason the Sabres were in that Chicago game.

  6. billsin20xx - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:29 AM

FIRE REGIER!!!!! NOW!!!!!! 15 YEARS, ABOUT 4 REBUILDS – HOW MANY CHANCES DO YOU GIVE HIM????

  7. flyerguy73 - Oct 15, 2013 at 9:34 AM

Typical buffalo sports team. Brainwash the fans thinking they will actually win the big games at the end of the season. Yet they (sabres, bills) will always be WAY below average teams that will amount to nothing. Gotta love it!

  8. voltron217 - Oct 15, 2013 at 10:16 AM

Flyer guy obviously got rejected by a buffalo chick and is a loser. For a guy that talks so much crap about buffalo you sure follow alllllll their news. Sounds like your a closet fan who won’t admit it. I would def like to punch you straight in the mouth but i don’t want to have to go in your moms basement to do it. You loser.

    • buddysguys - Oct 15, 2013 at 2:11 PM

flyer guy is a troll. hows the coaching situation philly??? you should focus on that chump.

  9. llojac1 - Oct 15, 2013 at 10:29 AM

Nothing will change as long as Regier is in charge. Wake up Mr. Pegula!! Why is the guy who created this mess in charge of trying to fix it? Sabres need a new, competent GM who will get rid of the deadweight on this team & bring in talented vets to show the young guys on the team how to play & win.

  10. juice1818 - Oct 15, 2013 at 10:36 AM

Vanek will look great in a Wild jersey, welcome home Thomas!!

  11. flyerguy73 - Oct 15, 2013 at 11:34 AM

Bring it voltron. There would be 3 hits. Me hitting you, you hitting the floor, and the ambulance hitting 60 to come pick your sorry ass up. Closet fan, you guessed it. You just can’t handle the truth about your lowly teams. Just keep rooting for them, they need morons like you.

    • buddysguys - Oct 15, 2013 at 2:13 PM
