After being something of a surprise cut during training camp, Brandon Pirri is on his way back to Chicago.

Pirri, 22, was recalled from AHL Rockford on Friday night as the club sent fellow forward Jimmy Hayes back to the minors.

The club’s second-round pick (59th overall) at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Pirri was though to have had a good shot of making the club this season after the departures of David Bolland and Michael Frolik. Pirri led AHL Rockford in scoring last season (75 points in 76 games) and was off to a good start this year, notching three assists through three games.

Pirri didn’t make the team out of training camp though, as mentioned. The ‘Hawks went with the likes of Joakim Nordstrom, Ben Smith and Hayes — the latter only appearing in two games this year, not dressing for Friday’s 3-2 win over the Islanders.

    Time to shine, Pirri.

Love Hayes, but he seemed pretty lost out there. I’m sure a lot of us Hawks fans wanted to see Pirri make the roster right out of the gate, but now its his time to give it a whirl.

Curious to see who they put him with.

1st, I think there is going to be a lot of call ups/send downs this year. Pirri missed all but 1 of the pre-season games with an injury, and it was likely a “not ready to play up here yet physically/stamina nwise” vs ” not ready skills wise”

    Kruger moves to wing?

So glad to see Pirri called up. Hope he gets a shot at the second line. Aft3r seeing that caps gam3, it makes me wish the Hawks had a right handed center in the system

Glad to see Pirri up. Hope he scores tonight against Buffalo

Glad to see Pirri back, it’s his time to make an impact. Jimmy has played well, however, still needs some fine tuning in Rockford.

The great thing is how deep the Hawks are, Hayes would be a second line player in half the league.

    Pirri is better than Hayes!

i’m sure HAYES will be back also. it’s a tough roster to break into. there are a couple of superstars that might need a scare of a minor league stint to get them rolling!
