Erskine has lower-body injury; Caps recall Schmidt

Oct 11, 2013, 1:01 PM EST

A bit of roster shuffling today in Washington, where the Capitals announced that defenseman John Erskine is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

Erskine reportedly suffered the injury during the scramble prior to Nathan Gerbe‘s winner last night for Carolina. As you can see, he (No. 4) went down rather awkwardly, and stayed down for a moment after the goal was scored:

Getting the call from AHL Hershey is 22-year-old defenseman Nate Schmidt, while d-man Connor Carrick and forward Michael Latta have been sent down.

Washington signed Schmidt out of the University of Minnesota in April.

With just one win in their first four games, the Caps host undefeated Colorado tomorrow.

Schmidt is expected to make his NHL debut against the Avs.

So let me get this straight… Erskine gets hurt a regular starting on D (although not the greatest) so the caps send down Carrick even though he has been decent in the first few games in order to bring up another kid in Schmidt who hasn’t played in the NHL yet? Meanwhile Orlov and Kundratek are available but not being used??? Maybe there is a salary cap issue with them I don’t know but outside of that issue there is no reason both of those guys shouldn’t be regulars in the line up especially with Hillen and now Erskine out.

Don’t quote me on this, but it may be due to the fact Schmidt is a lefty like Erskine and Carrick is a righty.

why in the flying #@&% are they sending down Latta? He was one of the best players last night and had nearly the least amount of ice time. Drew two penalties, threw his weight around, hustled every shift.

This organization continues to confuse and frustrate the living &*@# out of me.

F lines should be (10 and 16 interchangeable)-
    10-19-8
    16-84-20
    25-21-42
    24-46-43

    Defense is just a cluster..

As a Canes fans, I have to question sending down Latta as well.

Erat top line? MoJo no place on your team? Laich 3rd line?

I don’t know how much I like that lineup.

MJ90 is the top line’s cancer; he is a turnover machine. Erat could easily replace him would perform much better. MJ90 needs to be scratched, no question.

Laich’s contract is probably the most bloated on the current roster. He has been invisible and shouldn’t be getting 2nd line minutes.

yick. disagree with all of those. to each his own.

Seeing mojo get countless chances on the first line when he doesn’t get better and does absolutely nothing but turn the puck over to the other team is why I agree he shouldn’t be on the first line. He should get moved down to the chimera ward line. I have no idea what the organization sees in him

that, I can go with. but he’s got a place on the team… even if not on the 1st line
