The Colorado Avalanche placed defenseman Matt Hunwick on waivers to make room for fellow blueliner Ryan Wilson, the Denver Post reports.

The 28-year-old hasn’t appeared in a regular season game for the Avs, so it probably shouldn’t be too shocking that he was the odd man out.

He collected six assists in 43 games last season for Colorado and began his time with the organization in 2010-11. He has one year left on a deal that carries a $1.6 million cap hit and salary, so there’s a good chance he’ll clear waivers and make it to the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters.

Hunwick was a seventh-round pick (224th overall), so he’s used to fighting for time.

Wilson, 26, was limited to 12 games last season, collecting three assists in that time.

Someone take him! Someone take him!

Hunwick is a kid who got EVERYTHING out of his talent, but honestly he only stayed in the league on sheer will. He’s a great skater, but there’s nothing else there. He tries to play defense, but he’s tiny (more like 5′ 8″ than 5′ 11″) and can’t move anything. Sadly he might be remembered more for ending Marc Savard’s career (not his fault and they are still friends) than anything else.

I think Hunwick has potential actually. Remember, he’s been playing on a team for a while now with no defense at all due in a huge part because of poor coaching and not much team motivation. In the right environment, you may be surprised.

As long as that environment is not on the Avs, I wish him the best.

Well, yea, I didn’t say the AV’s environment… Let Detroit have at him! Canucks?

I’m hoping somebody claims him, problem is I don’t think there’s a GM alive who’s stupid enough to wanna take this guy. Maybe Jay Feaster, I also heard Philly needs a d-man.
