Oilers coach: ‘The city and fans should be angry, as angry as we are’

No doubt about it, the Edmonton Oilers have had a disappointing start to the 2013-14 season, going 0-2-0 while being out-scored 11-6. Some would call that “same old, same old,” but new head coach Dallas Eakins isn’t having it.

“The city and the fans should be angry, as angry as we are,” Eakins said. “It’s great that they care. Our team is upset too.”

The Oilers know that early results can be deceptive, even if their example isn’t quite what they want; they began the 2011-12 season with a promising 8-2-2 record before finishing in the basement as usual.

Eakins notes that he’s seen some “flashes of good” but that those old, losing habits are showing up far too often.

One player who did earn some praise was Ales Hemsky. The 30-year-old might have a -3 rating, but he also has three points in two games.

“He’s been unbelievable,” Eakins said. “We need more Ales Hemsky’s on our team right now. He’s playing with tremendous passion.”

Perhaps the team will show a little more of that passion in Monday’s game against the New Jersey Devils with backup Jason LaBarbera in net?

    Do you mean outscored 11-8?

    • kirkmcleansbaby - Oct 7, 2013 at 1:02 AM

Do YOU mean 11-6, because that is what it/you should say! 5-4 loss, and a 6-2 loss. 2+4=6 Ta-Da

They need goaltending plain and simple.

The Oilers “Young Guns” are overrated. As far as #1 overall picks go Hall, RNH, and Yakupov aren’t in the Crosby, Ovechkin, Stamkos category of elite franchise players. They’re merely quality top 6 forwards; not generational talents.

Oilers need a real goaltending and D. It’s a problem when Andrew Ference is logging top 4 minutes. And no Nurse isn’t the only solution. I really think they should’ve traded one of their high forward picks for a d-man this past offseason.

      • canucks30 - Oct 7, 2013 at 1:15 AM

You mean a patented Craig MacTavish “Bold Move?

    • broadstreetsbaddest88 - Oct 7, 2013 at 3:18 AM

Yeah I totally agree. I’ve been sayin that for awhile now. They picked the worst years tank it to win the draft lottery. If they did that a couple years earlier they’d have Kane, Stamkos and Tavares. Imagine havin them three on your team. I think in most drafts none of them there three would be first overall picks. They need alot more then them three to build a team around cause it aint gonna cut it

@broadstreet please tell me you typed that comment while intentionally trying to write like a hillbilly.

This team has all the talent in the world…it’s mind boggling that they still cant win…maybe kevin lowe should be fired and they find a real hockey guy to run the show

  8. malvaren18 - Oct 7, 2013 at 11:02 AM

This team is curse to loose

  9. smurfposse - Oct 7, 2013 at 12:06 PM

Bryzgalov…. I know it sounds like an odd suggestion, but seriously Dubnyk isn’t the answer for the Oilers and he’ll certainly bring in some passion.
