Rangers set stage for captain Callahan’s return

The New York Rangers are hoping for big things from J.T. Miller, but for now he’ll report to AHL Hartford, according to the Bergen Record. Miller logged 11:58 minutes in the Rangers’ season opener on Thursday.

This move is likely less about what the 20-year-old forward did and more about the Rangers’ situation. Captain Ryan Callahan is on the injured reserve list following his shoulder surgery, but is expected to return Monday. With Miller down, the Rangers have set the stage for Callahan’s activation.

Callahan is expected to join Marc Staal, Brad Richards, Derek Stepan, and Rick Nash on the team’s top power-play unit.

Rangers GM Glen Sather estimated that Callahan suffered eight or nine shoulder separations throughout the 2013 campaign. Despite that, Callahan still managed to score 16 goals and 31 points in 45 games.
