Unable to find a spot on an NHL team, veteran center Manny Malhotra has accepted a 25-game professional tryout with Carolina’s AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers.

A 33-year-old unrestricted free agent who suffered a serious eye injury in March of 2011, Malhotra played just nine games in 2013 before the Vancouver Canucks placed him on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Malhotra has been adamant that his vision can still allow him to be a productive player, as well as stay safe on the ice.

Unlike Bryz, who has multiple millions to soften his bruised ego in the ECHL (Vegas, baby!), Malhotra is fighting for a job. I hope he’s able to use this a chance to re-launch his career. Too many (though not all) vets never come back once they head down to the AHL.

Man this is a tough situation for Malhotra. I hope he makes the team. If only he had been wearing a visor back then… Like Marc Staal, if only he had been wearing a visor too (but it’s a good thing Staal’s vision is getting better). I’m glad that all newcomers to the NHL are required to wear visors now, that’s for sure…

I thought Malhotra was a faceoff specialist? Surely some contender somewhere will be knocking on his door as the playoffs approach. Hope so at least; he always seemed like a class act. Good luck, Manny!

Honestly I kinda hope not. I get that Malhotra thinks he can come back from this. But at the NHL level I think it’s pretty dangerous. His vision is bad enough that he just isn’t safe out there. We saw this during his brief stint back with the Canucks last year. At the AHL level, where the game is significantly slower, I think he could be okay. But I hope for his own sake that nobody decides to sign him.
