The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed veteran forward Chuck Kobasew to a one-year, $550,000 contract.

From the press release:

Kobasew, 31, attended training camp with the Penguins on a professional tryout contract. He suited up for five exhibition games, tying for second on the club with two goals while posting an even rating.

Originally drafted by the Calgary Flames in the first round (14th overall) of the 2001 NHL Draft, Kobasew has played 10 NHL seasons with Calgary, Boston, Minnesota and Colorado, totaling 208 points (108G-100A), 30 power-play goals and 18 game-winning tallies in 568 career regular-season games.

The 6-foot, 192-pound forward spent the previous two seasons playing with Colorado, totaling 23 points (12G-11A) in 95 regular-season contests. His plus-6 rating in 2012-13 ranked first among all Avalanche forwards.

Kobasew’s best offensive season came in 2008-09 when he scored 42 points, including 21 goals, for the Boston Bruins. But he’s not joining the Pens for his offense. He was a constant on the penalty kill last year with the Avs, averaging 1:46 per game in shorthanded ice time.

I wonder if he’s taking D’Agostini’s spot on the third line or if he’s playing on the fourth. Awfully crowded on that fourth line right now with Vitale/Jeffrey/Adams (who has to play)/Glass/Kobasew. Still expecting (hoping) for a move on Defense to get Despres back up. Moving D-men isn’t easy right now though I guess.

D’agostini went on the IR and Kobesaw is on the third line with Sutter and Bennett. The fourth line is Adams, Glass, and jefferey. Depres got outplayed in camp by Bortozzo and management thinks Maatta outperformed depres in camp too. With all the D prospects the pens have, I see them trading depres in the future.

I disagree completely about the feelings on Despres. Bortuzzo couldn’t be moved without clearing waivers, and is a completely different kind of Dman than Despres. Despres struggled early in preseason, but did much better later. Borts would be groomed to hopefully take Brooks spot someday (hopefully not after this year). With Niskanen on the roster there’s just no room for Despres right now. With Marten and Letang both having high priced contracts next year I’m expecting Martin to be gone after this year. So I hope they keep Despres.

Maatta did well but is no where near ready, he MIGHT get his 9 game try-out but I doubt even that – certainly hasn’t made the club. When Letang comes back he’ll be sent back, Ruopp is still on the roster too (or was until today) but clearly didn’t impress anyone enough to be up there.

Also – D’Agostini’s not on IR anymore, just Letang and Vokoun I believe.

D’agostni is on the IR. He was just placed on it today. I hope they keep depres too but from what I read they hold Pouliott and Maata in higher regard then depres. The pens have 3 puck moving defenseman (letang, martin, niskanen) and 3 stay at home (scuderi, orpik, bortuzzo) with letang being out short term, he could be back by Tuesday. That leaves room for a Maata tryout, and still leaves no room for depres.

I have just been more impressed with Despres (though his decision making has been iffy, but can certainly grow) than Niskanen. And I can’t see Martin and Letang eating up that much of the cap next year…should be interesting!

Kobasew is a very solid player. The longer you watch him the more you appreciate him. Good pick up.

Hopefully this means the end of the Tanner Glass experiment in Pittsburgh.
