Ex-Sabres captain Pominville says Ott-Vanek combo is ‘weird’

One guy that’s not a fan of Buffalo’s decision to name Thomas Vanek and Steve Ott co-captains?

The last player to wear the “C” for the Sabres, Jason Pominville.

Pominville, Buffalo’s captain for parts of four seasons before getting dealt to the Wild, told the Minnesota Star-Tribune he thinks the Sabres’ new setup — Vanek serving as captain at home, Ott on the road — is strange.

“I think it’s weird,” he explained. “They’ve done [the rotating thing] in the past. I don’t know if it’s their way of doing it. It just feels a little weird to have a couple guys.

It should be noted this isn’t the first time Buffalo has gone to a dual captaincy. The Sabres utilized both Chris Drury and Daniel Briere as co-captains during the 2006-07 campaign — capturing the Presidents’ Trophy — and that’s a year Pominville should remember well, considering he finished with a career-high 34 goals.

Despite this, Pominville still thinks the decision is odd.

“Usually you want that one guy,” he said.

    Oh my.

  2. lostpuppysyndrome - Oct 1, 2013 at 3:29 PM

So does one handle the “big picture” stuff while the other takes the day-to-day things?

  3. bullwinkle88 - Oct 1, 2013 at 3:38 PM

Either one of them (certainly Ott) is probably going to be a better captain than Pominville ever was.

      Totally agree.

  4. canucks30 - Oct 1, 2013 at 3:49 PM

Or you could be like the Oilers and name everybody on the team a Captain.

One captain is needed. Wrf is the point of having two? Thats what assistants are for…

    • westinpat - Oct 1, 2013 at 4:19 PM

Alternate is the correct name, not assistants, fyi.

Could it be an indirect way of telling both of them that the Sabres want to sign them long term?

    • p716 - Oct 1, 2013 at 5:51 PM

No via tradition over the last 30 years the captains were traded except for Perrault! Ott should decline for that reason until Vanek gets shown the door.

The words STEVE OTT and CAPTAIN on the same paper is also weird. It’s gonna be east to see who the bandwagon fans are in buffalo. Any fool with an Ott / C jersey is a fake.

    • alswingman - Oct 1, 2013 at 11:36 PM

a fake Sabres fan. How humiliating that would be.

  8. 950003cups - Oct 1, 2013 at 5:44 PM

But the Oilers take the cake on stupid. They have 6 A’s. Three home and three away. So dumb!!!

  9. p716 - Oct 1, 2013 at 5:49 PM

WOW! Pominville was the Sabres Captain, who knew?

Does anyone in buffalo (besides teenage girls) care what jason pominville says?

  11. meldboy - Oct 1, 2013 at 7:27 PM

I get giving Ott the C, he’s a fan favorite in Buffalo and can provide leadership to a young team. Vanek on the other hand is someone they have been actively shopping? They want to get rid of him so bad that they are willing to retain a portion of his salary to facilitate a trade.

The honor and class of being named Captain passed long ago at least where 95% of “Captains” are concerned. It jumped the shark with Vancouver and the Luongo incident. If a team doesn’t have one person that stands out, just name three Alternates.

    pommers right

  14. bufffalojoe - Oct 1, 2013 at 10:18 PM

ticket prices rise so the fans can pay for 2 C’s to be stitched and new signs for the aisles it’s all making sense to me now

  15. alswingman - Oct 1, 2013 at 11:37 PM

Does it matter who the captain is of the Sabres? They are a just a team there for others to beat.

  16. jomosh - Oct 2, 2013 at 1:51 PM

No Jason. A weird combo is being a captain of a team and not being a leader. You should know that first hand seeing how the team did with you as captain.
