A new era is about to start in Sunrise.

The Florida Panthers made it official today announcing the sale of the franchise to New York City businessman Vincent Viola for what’s believed to be $230 million. (Update: John Shannon of Sportsnet says it’s for $250 million with about half of that going to creditors) His official title is chairman, principal owner and governor of Sunrise Sports & Entertainment and the Panthers. That’s a mouthful.

Viola is purchasing the team from, now former owner, Cliff Viner and his group of investors. Panthers coach Kevin Dineen tells George Richards of the Miami Herald he’s proud of what Viner did for the franchise.

“Cliff leaves the franchise much better than how he found it,” coach Kevin Dineen told the Miami Herald. “He leaves us on solid ground and heading in the right direction.”

Joining Viola in the front office is Douglas Cifu as vice chairman, partner and alternate governor. Michael Yormark, who you may recall from past Twitter dustups, is promoted to team president and CEO.

With new ownership in place, the team was able to sign goalie Tim Thomas to a one-year deal yesterday. Perhaps this is a sign of things making a a successful turnaround both on and off the ice for the Panthers.

The headline should read something along the lines of “Panthers thrown in with $230m sale of the BB&T Center Lease”

The Panthers will continue to lose money due to exorbitant rent paid by the team to its owners, while allowing Vola to operate the BB&T Center at a significant overall profit.

I don’t think anyone will ever offer you 230 million and a hockey team. If they do, you should take it.

        Not if it’s Florida

that Florida team has championships, something my Wild can’t say.

So yeah, I’d buy em if I had the money because at the end of the day.. there’s only a handful of pro sports team owners.

You have an issue with a state that has year round golfing, no income tax and topless beaches with spanish women?

        @hockeyflow
love the weather and no tax but South Beach has mostly naked European models in the winter. they’re cool but the Cubanoes are nasty hoes.Gold diggers and cokeheads. But funny to watch old men video them while the girls F bomb them.

If you would read the entire article, it says $250 with half going to creditors. Which basically means Viola owns the Panthers themselves for about $125 million.

What championships do the panthers have? They went to the cup once and lost. They don’t have one let alone multiple

I hope Florida and Phoenix play for the next five cups, just to piss the comment section off.

Throw in a winter classic too

      • greatmiamisportsmind - Sep 27, 2013 at 1:53 PM

That would be kinda funny to see winter classic at Sun Life Stadium. Hopefully Tampa vs Florida just to get everyone riled up.

Didn’t realize you can play hockey by swimming. Pretty sure the puck would sink.
