NHL Rivalries, NHL Top 10 coming to NBCSN

Sep 26, 2013, 2:22 PM EDT

We’re eagerly anticipating the start of the 2013-14 campaign and to tie into that, NBCSN is launching two new programs.

Many of you will remember that every Wednesday last season was Rivalry Night on NBCSN and that will be back with a match against the Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings on Oct. 2. However, this season NBCSN is taking that a step forward.

On Tuesday Oct. 9 at 10:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN will debut a new weekly program called NHL Rivals, which goes into the history of the following night’s rivalry match. The first episode will look at the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues before you see them compete at 8:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday Oct. 10. If you miss NHL Rivals on Tuesdays, there will be an encore presentation of it at 6:30 p.m. ET on Wednesdays.

Following NHL Rivals, will be NHL Top 10 at 11:00 p.m. ET. As the name implies, it will be a countdown show with the goal of analyzing some of the greatest hockey debates. The topics will be varied and include things like the top Olympic moments and greatest goal scorers.

Could be great, could be horrible. Pull this off, NBC! Come on! I don’t want to see any made up rivalries just because two teams are playing the next night.

    • bcsteele - Sep 26, 2013 at 3:06 PM

Well they’re off to a great start…Blues and Blackhawks is a classic rivalry in the NHL. Though I must say over the last several years it seems it’s been more Blues / Red Wings and Hawks / Canucks. However, with the new divisions and the Blues and Hawks expected to be at the top of the pool, I’m hoping it kick starts this deal back up cause it’d be fun to watch.

I MISS HOCKEY! LET’S START THE SEASON ALRAEDY!!! LET’S GO BLUES!!!!!

Buffalo vs Detroit is an inauspicious start to rivalry night.

Make up shiite if you have to but make it a slick production.I hope it’s something like whatay NFL films does.I’d say hey the same crew to make”nhl films”. The nfl is the best at making shows like that.he’ll the nhl should hire the nfl to make their programs.

  3. rippit2000 - Sep 26, 2013 at 3:06 PM

Yeah, when I think of white-hot rivalries, Buffalo-Detroit is the first one that comes to mind.

    • pizzaman77 - Sep 26, 2013 at 3:37 PM

Give it time with the new divisions

      • Anoesis - Sep 26, 2013 at 4:18 PM

Wouldn’t Buffalo have to field a competitive team first?

    • mehetmet - Sep 26, 2013 at 3:40 PM

new division, new rivalry. It could become something, you have to wait and see.

    • bullwinkle88 - Sep 26, 2013 at 5:58 PM

That’s because they don’t have one! It’s total fabricated nonsense.

    • Lupy Nazty Philthy - Sep 27, 2013 at 5:18 PM

There’s something Erie about that rivalry.

  4. schlitzy - Sep 26, 2013 at 4:18 PM

    love this idea!!

  5. pitpenguinsrulez - Sep 26, 2013 at 4:22 PM

Can’t wait for Penguins vs Flyers!! That’s the most important one out of em all in my book. After that the rest will be worthy of watching as well

    • hainesw1969 - Sep 26, 2013 at 4:37 PM

      SOOOOOO…NBCSN…..NO Flyers-Penguins or Flyers-Rangers in that commercial….Sir’s! That commercial is a fraud!!

      • mp1131211 - Sep 26, 2013 at 5:07 PM

The sun does not revolve around philladelphia.

    • coyotes89 - Sep 27, 2013 at 12:49 PM

I mostly watch west coast games but your right. It’s hard to beat a flyers penguins game. So many ups and downs

  6. bullwinkle88 - Sep 26, 2013 at 5:56 PM

They’re going to have a problem right off the bat. Detroit and Buffalo don’t have a rivalry, never did. They’ve always been in separate conferences, so it’s stupid to pair them up and claim rivalry.

Fact is, that is probably the only game they could schedule so they’re going to have to make something up.

  7. canadianguest - Sep 26, 2013 at 6:25 PM

Old rivalry, new rivalry, it doesn’t matter. If we hate them (players, fans, management, reporters, city) and they hate us, it’s on.

    Ottawa and Toronto – hate
    Montreal and Boston – hate
    Pittsburgh and Philadelphia – hate

    just to name a few.

  8. tcclark - Sep 26, 2013 at 7:14 PM

I was waiting for the preview to say Flyers Vs Everyone.

Seriously though there are some fairly obvious ones like
    Flyers v Penguins
    Flyers v Rangers
    Flyers v Devils
    Flyers v Islanders
    Flyers v Bruins
    Flyers v Capitals
    Flyers v Leafs

Then there are some quiet rivalries like
Flyers v Senators ever since the Havlat incident and the Mega Brawl
Flyers v Lightning ever since the 04 ECF, then the Trap game, then the Rinaldo fight, now Vinny
Flyers v Sabres have had some crazy playoff series
Flyers v Canadiens I almost put this in the obvious ones
Flyers v Red Wings has always been interesting especially after the 97 finals.
Flyers v Blackhawks has been growing since the 10 Finals

It’s weird but I feel like I’m missing one. You don’t get the name “Broad Street Bullies” if you get along with everyone.

    • jimw81 - Sep 27, 2013 at 9:41 PM

nothing will top the pregame playoff brawl btw flyers and candiens.

      • tcclark - Sep 28, 2013 at 9:28 AM

I don’t know. The one with the Senators where the Sens purposely put Havlat in the penalty box to avoid him getting the crap beat out of him was pretty good. John LeClair got 5 minutes for fighting. John LeClair haha. I think the Flyers had 6 players by the end of the game.

  9. coolkidchris - Sep 26, 2013 at 7:44 PM

Loving all these West Coast rivalries….

  10. mclovinhockey - Sep 26, 2013 at 8:17 PM

Biggest rivals… With the wings hawks sure to end it’s really flyers vs pens/rags and Habs vs leafs/B’s

I’m hoping for some more to boil to being as high and heated as these match ups but you can not force a true rivalry. Just look at pens v caps. That was forced fed to us for a while but we all knew it wasn’t a real rivalry.

Hawks and Nucks could boil over now that the wings have been removed from the west in which I feel was still the most idiotic move any league owner has ever done.

Also hope the battle of Cali can heat up soon. Right now the best rivalry out west is prob between the oil and flames which hasn’t meant anything in a while.

    • bbobes327 - Sep 29, 2013 at 1:38 PM

      Dont forget Flyers – Devils

  11. grumpyoleman - Sep 26, 2013 at 8:22 PM

The wings have not had a true rival since the Colorado thing a few years ago. There has been a little bit with the pens that could develop into something now but I would personally like to see the leafs and wings get something going

  12. proudliberal85392 - Sep 26, 2013 at 10:52 PM

I just learned something I didn’t know. We apparently have no rivalries out here, west of the Mississippi. Who knew?

  13. Lupy Nazty Philthy - Sep 27, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Hawks and Blues makes me miss the days when the Leafs were in the Norris Division. So many good teams in the Norris back then. So many great players on every team.

Kind of sucks the NHL split up the Chicago-Detroit rivalry this year, but will be cool to rekindle the Detroit-Toronto rivalry.

  14. bbobes327 - Sep 29, 2013 at 1:41 PM

Really hope the Devils make it in here.

    Devils – Rangers
    Devils – Flyers

If you watch hockey, you know those are two great rivalries.

    Out west….
    battle of alberta
LA – ANA – SJ – great rivalries that are getting more and more heated
    Hawks – Blues

    Any that i missed?
