Leafs’ Franson may consider playing in Europe if unsigned

Toronto Maple Leafs restricted free agent Cody Franson is still without a new contract. Now with training camp well underway and the start of the season approaching, he’s looking for a place to play and may wind up in Europe to do it.

Franson tells Chris Johnston of Sportsnet he’s looking at playing overseas if he and the Leafs can’t come to an agreement.

“I haven’t explored (overseas options) but I know that’s definitely something I might have to consider,” Franson said. “Hopefully it doesn’t come to that, but it’s not like I haven’t been over there before.”

He did play there last year, in Sweden, during the lockout. It’s not where he wants to be this year, however.

Franson’s negotiations with Leafs GM Dave Nonis have been awkward to say the least. The Toronto Star reports talks are at a “standstill” with Franson looking for a one-year deal while the Leafs want to get him for two.

With the salary cap likely going up next year, Franson wants to be able to cash in then knowing he can’t really do that now with the team in a salary cap bind.

    Good for him.

Good for him? He should just sign the contract. He wants to cash in after one good year that was a half year? Sign the two year like Subban did. Play awesome. Then cash in.

For sure he’s the best Leaf defenseman,. He’s had ten offer sheets this week! I heard one was worth almost 2.5 mil/season…wait, my bad, that was the Leafs offer.

He’s not bad defensively, and he’s got a good shot. 25 of his 29 points were assists resulting from point shots on the power play, so there is a little bit of luck there. We are not talking about a guy that’s an offensive power house here. We’re talking about a guy that got 4 goals last season, and 5 goals the year before. He’s been playing in the third defense pairing against the opposing team’s weaker players, and even though he’s a big guy, he doesn’t do a lot of body checking.

I like Cody, but he is far from being the Leafs best defenseman.

I like Franson, but he’s ruining his own career trying to go for a big salary in the worst possible year to try and get a big salary. Sign a couple years, then cash in when there’s money to spend.

Leafs should just trade him while his value is high. He’s decent, but not going to hurt the team to move. Leafs have plenty of defensive prospects that will be just as good if not better… and considering the amount of cap space left, the Leafs are probably better off signing Raymond and giving a prospect a shot than overpaying Franson 1st liner money to play 2nd/3rd line minutes.

If he’s not the Leafs best Dman then who is?

Exactly, their d isn’t very good

      Leafs?
2nd best PK in the NHL and only 0.1% out of 1st place.
1st in Hits, 180 more than the next team.
1st in blocked shots, 26 more than the next team.
      7th in takeaways.

      Kings?
PK… 10th best in the NHL
      Hits… 2nd best, but WAY in 2nd.
Blocked shots… 30th (aka dead last)
Takeaways… 30th (aka dead last again)

@kingsforever – You can give Lupy a thumbs down all you want, but it doesn’t change the truth in his comment. The Leafs are very deep at defense, and are a good, young, up and coming team. If you really knew anything about hockey other than your team, you would know this already.
