Lundqvist shakes off Brodeur’s indirect jab about big pads

Goalies don’t usually trade barbs, but if it’s going to happen, it might as well come among local rivals. That seems to be the case between Martin Brodeur and Henrik Lundqvist, as Brodeur seemingly accused Lundqvist of wearing pads for more than just protection, as the Bergen Record reported on Saturday.

“There’s goalies — I won’t name names, but they’re not too far — they have different padding that it’s not about protection,” Brodeur said.

How subtle.

The New York Rangers star netminder shook off the future New Jersey Devils Hall of Famer in Monday’s edition of the New York Post.

“I know people have thought that I look big out there, but that’s never been an issue with me,” Lundqvist said. “I know I’m ‘not too far,’ but I don’t know what he’s talking about.”

Hey, it never hurts to fan the rivalry flames here and there, right?

  1. mactruck27 - Sep 16, 2013 at 11:04 PM

Marty has extra padding that’s not for protection, it’s all around his gut and his chins.

    • blomfeld - Sep 17, 2013 at 1:10 AM

      FU idiot !

    • amaleader - Sep 22, 2013 at 12:30 PM

      flubby flopy fatso

  2. hockeyflow33 - Sep 16, 2013 at 11:34 PM

Goalies have always done that. I remember hearing Tony Esposito talk about how he would take padding out of his pads when they were inspected and then he’d put it all back in after they checked.

  3. rjkilla - Sep 16, 2013 at 11:42 PM

Queen will always be second fiddle the the legend across the river

    • amaleader - Sep 22, 2013 at 12:33 PM

its king and debbies are 3rd in the tri state try filling up the seats at the prudential retirement home devils suck!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. esracerx46 - Sep 16, 2013 at 11:59 PM

Any body think Brodeur wore pads that were any smaller than Lundqvist’s? While Lundqvist may benefit more than some because of how he plays, dont let Brodeur fool you by thinking his pads were any smaller than anyone else’s.

    • tieio - Sep 17, 2013 at 12:40 AM

Check your sources, while his pads may be regulation now they are not “the same size as everyone else’s”. After the lockout in 2005 they shrunk the size of goalie pads, if you recall? The only goalie in the league wearing the size they shrunk them to was Brodeur. That’s right, Brodeur was wearing the smallest pads in the league at that time. Now however, his are not the smallest in the league but they are not the largest and certainly not the same as all others. He still uses smaller pads and still relies more on agility than pads to make saves.

      • moarjam - Sep 17, 2013 at 9:46 AM

Oh c’mon he uses his pads just as much as any goalie.

Marty is one of the bests of all time. Hank is one of the bests in the game today. Both great goalies. Personally, I like them taking shots at each other. It’s entertaining.

      • digitalcampfire - Sep 19, 2013 at 11:00 AM

moarjam, it’s more about there being loopholes and “adaptations” of the rules that have been in place. Lundqvist, and several other European and Scandinavian goalies are known to have been “interpreting” the rules to their advantage by using above-averagely sized pads. That’s not really up for discussion.

  5. juzzi7 - Sep 17, 2013 at 1:14 AM

Reminds me of Luongo and Thomas from 2011 playoffs! “It’s an easy save for me”

Going to be awkward if Lundqvist concedes fivehole goals against the devils

  6. blomfeld - Sep 17, 2013 at 1:32 AM

Good on Marty for calling out this Michelin Man for ‘that’ which he is … an ‘unscrupulous’ cheater hiding behind the walls of cowardice and deceit, much like Luongo, Rinne, Smith (liar), Price and others. Even though I’m not a Devils fan, I’m nonetheless obliged to ‘tip my hat’ in response to this man’s candid honesty !

    Go Marty !!!

    Go Quickie !!!!!!

Go playing the game with courage and honor !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • amaleader - Sep 22, 2013 at 12:34 PM

courage and honor and marty??? lmao get off the crack more like mart and doughnuts

  7. 950003cups - Sep 17, 2013 at 1:52 AM

Anyone who thinks Lundqvist had “normal size pads” is a liar. His shoulder pads look like he stole them from Shona in The Last Dragon. His leg pads have Serta logos on them.

We’re not even into the regular season yet and the New Jersey inferiority complex has reared its ugly head. Relax! You guys haven’t even missed the playoffs yet.

    • martysbetter - Sep 17, 2013 at 8:25 AM

      Inferiority complex?

Have fun watching your teams latest rendition of 23 girls, one cup.

      • idonthavethebloodyoucrave - Sep 17, 2013 at 9:29 AM

I thought it was 70 plus years and one cup?

Poor gent finally realized that the New York Mets and Jets are equal or better franchises when it comes to winning.

        LOL ouch…

      • amaleader - Sep 22, 2013 at 12:37 PM

have fun at the retirement home.. i mean prudential center u gys had 1 threat… kovalchoke and he couldnt leave fast enuf

      • amaleader - Sep 22, 2013 at 12:38 PM

have fun watching those geriatrichs.. i mean the devils haha u guys arent even a threat to the isles haha

    • treebeard - Sep 17, 2013 at 10:15 AM

As a Rangers fan, that made me laugh. As a NJ native, though, it made me feel very small… Just kidding. Still, though, hearing people from NYC act like they’re better than us gets annoying after awhile.

  9. mustbechris - Sep 17, 2013 at 5:13 AM

I just naturally assumed he meant Garth Snow.

  11. ragsrus - Sep 17, 2013 at 9:27 AM

This NJ inferiority complex is pathetic, just like their know nothing fans, all 7 of them. Fatso should keep his mouth shut. Hank is the best goalie on the planet. He’s just pissed nobody outside of nj knows who he is. Devils and their fans are such losers.

    • masterown35 - Sep 17, 2013 at 11:35 AM

Hey I have a question. If Lundqvist is the greatest goalie in the world, wheres his ring??

      • amaleader - Sep 22, 2013 at 12:39 PM

on its way devils cant even dream about it with the team u got ull be lucky to make it 10th spot

    • digitalcampfire - Sep 19, 2013 at 11:06 AM

Inferiority complex? You’re using a joke (“fatso”) coined by Sean Avery, your “retired” 30 year old former fan favorite. That’s a joke in itself as to how inferior the Rangers organization is to their younger brother across the river. Did you get an invite to his wedding with Andy Cohen from Bravo? Are you subscribed to his fashion blogs?…

  12. ragsrus - Sep 17, 2013 at 9:38 AM

What’s more pathetic is that the devils will be a lottery team this year and won’t even have their pick. Devils fans are such petty jealous losers. They make me laugh.

    • idonthavethebloodyoucrave - Sep 17, 2013 at 9:52 AM

Do you define losers as either winning the Championship or getting to the Championship series 28% of the time in the last 18 years or as one championship between now and Harry S. Truman?

    • digitalcampfire - Sep 19, 2013 at 11:10 AM

I’m jealous of the Yankees. Otherwise, Rangers are all the way in the back of the line of local franchises Devils fans are jealous of… Yankees > Devils > Giants > Islander > Jets > Mets, etc., Rangers are near the bottom of the pecking order in terms of success in the second half of the last century..

      • amaleader - Sep 22, 2013 at 12:40 PM

what u smokin?? when it comes to playoffs talks and prediction s debbies dont even cum close yea jagr and clowe are gona lead u to victory lamo mayby kovy could… o wait he couldnt run to russia fast enuff hahah .. ouch

  13. ragsrus - Sep 17, 2013 at 9:53 AM

No, fatso should keep his mouth shut. Devils should realize that their 3rd class citizens in the tri-state area.

    • 950003cups - Sep 17, 2013 at 11:14 AM

There’s no inferiority complex. It’s just classless that people from Brooklyn, which one of the dirtiest places on earth, and manhattan act like know everything and just by loving there makes them special.

As a Brooklyn native who lived in manhattan, I can tell you that NOBODY in manhattan even knows the rangers exist. After they make enough money and start a family, they all move to NJ. Brooklyn people are just stuck in that cesspool for life.

Living in ny, is nothing to brag about to NJ people cause almost half of us were from there and hated it.

So to hear you fools actually brag about it, is annoying. The only inferiority complex comes from those who kick and scream and vent jealousy towards a winning franchise.

It’s funny when ranger fans brag about being from NY when nobody in 3 of the 5 boroughs cares about hockey at all, belt alone ranger fans.

So come over to the bright side, we have bright days ahead. You’re welcome to join the church of winners. NY Giants, Jets and Red Bulls all play and live in NJ. The NY Yankees actually owned the NJ Devils for a while cause they know what a real winner is.

      • idonthavethebloodyoucrave - Sep 17, 2013 at 11:19 AM

When it comes to winning, the Jets are just as much of an embarrassment to big market franchises as the New York Rangers are. The only exception is that the NY Jets are just slightly more comical.

    • thecheeman - Sep 17, 2013 at 11:31 AM

      haha “they’re”

Did you say nobody outside New Jersey knows who Marty is? Nice one.

    • digitalcampfire - Sep 19, 2013 at 11:12 AM

Champions are not 3rd class citizens. Win a Cup first and only then you can at least try to talk down to the people that are better than you (but still look ridiculous).

  14. callemlikeiseeem - Sep 17, 2013 at 7:13 PM

Marty’s right Lundqvist’s pads are crazy long. The new rule is 9″s above the knee, 2″s shorter than the old. This pic
looks to me like he was stretching 11″ pretty far. The rule change in 05 was max with from 12″ to 11″. They are both great goalies but Marty record has him in a class by himself.

    • scrappy1994 - Sep 19, 2013 at 2:49 AM

Actually the new rule is a percentage of the distance from the knee to the pelvic bone so that it’s fair to all goalies.

  15. nyrangers230 - Sep 17, 2013 at 11:51 PM

Hey Marty, its about time you retire. That rocking chair has been waiting for you. Good job Hank, for not lowering yourself to his classless level. You may be a legend, but you have made some unsportsmanlike comments about players just because you have broken records doesn’t make you a classy goalie or hockey player. You are still our King Henrik. LETS GO RANGERS!!

    • 950003cups - Sep 18, 2013 at 3:58 AM

That old man you speak of is just a tad over a year removed from undressing your queen from the only conference final he’ll ever see in his career. But yes, must ranger fans want him to retire. But now… Lol… If he retires tomorrow, you have Cory Schneider to deal with! Lol
You got a small glimpse of that on Monday night.
All looking bad in Ragville for years to come. Come join the winners circle. You’re all welcome! Renounce your Rag fandom and be a winner! Just buy a Devils jersey, get fix, and watch your new team hoist the cup. Hurry up, they may win this year.

  16. nicknyhc - Sep 18, 2013 at 5:51 AM

What planet are Devils fans living on when they say that the Devils are a top contender this year?

    All trash talking aside…..honestly.

    • sarch3092 - Sep 18, 2013 at 12:21 PM

That Nj has 15+ forwards deserving of a NHL roster spot….so much depth and talent….. who do the rangers have outside of Princess Hank? Nash Callahan Del Zotto Girardi and Stall….. No Depth in that line up….. Depth and D wins Cups if you haven’t noticed and the Devils have both

      • loveandlitee - Sep 18, 2013 at 4:13 PM

No depth? Are you smoking crack?

    • endusersolutions2013 - Sep 18, 2013 at 1:02 PM

If one is going to talk about depth and D, the best example is the Hawks, who were #1 defensively last year, and had the best points and +/- depth in the league.

Their challenge this year is that they have too many good players for the spots avaiulable. Guys that would be playing for most clubs are going to be sent back down. I’m really hoping Brookbank will be traded so there will be abotyher spot open (Stanton or Kostka).

    • amaleader - Sep 22, 2013 at 12:50 PM

ur mom made a terrible mistake debbies got no depth just a retirement home clowe jagr and elisa.. real depth lmao more like brassard zucc pouliot get off the drugs sis and remember debbies SUCK haha dont blame kovy for running to russia as fast as he could cant blame him for not wanting to carrry martys fat ass all his career haha debbies are not even close to threatening ur lines have a baetter chance at having a stroke then goals ahha isles are tougher then u loser lamo

  18. cpatt92 - Sep 19, 2013 at 2:48 AM

I think it’s quite cute how there’s always a reason to say why something good is happening. Here’s a rebuttal: If Hank was exploiting the rules with his pads, let us not forget the defense/trap type hockey Marty had in front of him for all those cups in that cute little span. Brodeur is incredible, but he never had to face many shots. Quit the whining and just retire. As for you Devils fans, how bout spend less time here, and maybe attend some games? I just LOOOVE seeing those empty seats throughout the season. Let me guess though? Way too expensive? They’re the Yankees of hockey with their ticket prices. Oh wait…

    • digitalcampfire - Sep 19, 2013 at 11:17 AM

There were no rules in place that made “the trap” illegal. There are rules in place that goalies like Lundqvist (not ONLY Lundqvist, which is important to mention) have stretched and re-interpreted.

    • digitalcampfire - Sep 19, 2013 at 11:18 AM

Also, the fact that Rangers were #20 in last year’s attendance rankings and Devils close by at #21, your little attendance comment was very cute, and also innaccurate.

      • nicknyhc - Sep 19, 2013 at 6:17 PM

Your attendance comment is also very cute, and inaccurate Digitalcampfire.

The Prudential Center has a slightly higher seating capacity than MSG but considerably less people in attendance at “sold out” Devils games than at sold out Rangers games. So many sections of the Prudential Center are corporate owned that even when the game is sold out there are still 5,000 empty seats usually.

Sure, some season ticket owners at ANY stadium are gonna miss some games and their seats stay empty, but you don’t see entire sections of the Garden empty during sold out games.

Only the Devils would build a stadium with the capacity for 17,265 hockey fans, sell 4,000 corporate owned (empty) seats, and pass off a crowd of 13,000 as a “sold out” game.

      • amaleader - Sep 22, 2013 at 12:42 PM

what u smokin sis?? debbies “fans” can barely fill up that retirement home ur in competition with the isles lmaooo

  19. shoobiedoobin - Sep 20, 2013 at 1:03 PM

Ol’ overrated Marty sure has a thing for goalies he feels threatened by. He took a jab at Roy way back because he felt threatened. He was jealous as hell of Dominik Hasek and took cheap baseless pot shots at him while Hasek ignored him and outplayed him at every turn. Now he’s taking shots at another guy who is better than he is. Lundqvist doesn’t have the benefit of the trap helping him for 20 years.

Notice Marty doesn’t have a problem with the mattress pads on Giguere? Because Giguere isn’t a threat to anyone. Marty doesn’t care about average goalies. He’s always been an insecure overrated hack. The trap breaks down, Marty can’t carry a team. It’s not his age that’s made him play like crap since the lockout 10 years ago, it’s been his defense deteriorating.

Marty, STFU. It’s always something with this clown.

  20. amaleader - Sep 22, 2013 at 12:29 PM

lmao at all the debbie fans rather than complain here y dnt u start goin to ur games. u c all those empty seats ur just as bad as the isles haha depth?? wut depth do the debbies have??? prudential center is a retirement home clowe jagr elias that line will have more of a chance at having a stroke than scoring goals! brodeurs cheats with all that padding…wait thats his blub jub. aka fatty flopper heck even the fishsticks have a better chance at the cup devils wont even come close to eight seed theres more depth in in apuddle then their is in the devils one player used to make me worried and that was kovalchuk and he couldnt get out of that cesspool quick enuf hank is one of the greatest goalies in the world and marty is threatened as usual debbies fans (all 5 of them) always need to talk tuff b4 the season starts cuz halfway thru their alrdy out haha rangers have a hell of a lot better chance at the cup then the devils devils are no way even close
