Having Schneider in New Jersey is ‘a great challenge’ for Brodeur

The goaltending dynamic in New Jersey continues to take shape.
Cory Schneider is pushing for the starting job, occupied for roughly the last 20 years by Martin Brodeur, arguably the best netminder in the game’s history, who is looking to maintain his position.
“It’s a lot different when you’re the age of (40-year-old Johan Hedberg) and you know he’s going to be the backup,” Brodeur said, as per the northjersey.com hockey blog Fire & Ice.

“(Schneider’s) working to be No. 1 and it’s going to be a great challenge for me to take my game to a certain level so we could push each other and do well for the team.”

This is not a new situation for Schneider.

He was originally drafted by the Vancouver Canucks and surpassed Roberto Luongo as the No. 1 goalie in Vancouver during the 2012 playoffs.

In a dramatic plot twist to the goalie saga in Vancouver, the Canucks traded Schneider to New Jersey for the ninth overall pick in a shocker at this year’s draft.

It still appears Schneider will be the back-up, behind Brodeur.

”Those things sort themselves out,” Devils head coach Peter DeBoer said earlier this month. “Marty’s back. Marty’s our starting goaltender and we’ve got a fantastic 1A in Cory Schneider.”
