Report: Islanders give Martinek a professional tryout

The New York Islanders have invited defenseman Radek Martinek to training camp via a professional tryout, New York Newsday’s Arthur Staple reports.

Martinek, 37, is the only veteran NHL player who will fight for a spot with the team. Staple points out that Miroslav Satan was involved in informal workouts with Islanders players while Brad Boyes chose a PTO with the Florida Panthers instead of the Isles.

This might be an audition of sorts for the Czech-born blueliner, but the Islanders should be more than familiar with his work.

The team drafted him in the eighth round (228th overall) in 1999 and he’s played 466 of his 473 career regular season NHL games with the Islanders. This includes a 13-game stint with the team in 2013, as he scored three goals in 13 games and also appeared in two postseason contests.
