Devils coach plans on treating Jagr like everyone else

Unlike 43-year-old Anaheim Ducks icon Teemu Selanne, Jaromir Jagr won’t be getting extra rest in 2013-14 despite being 41.

That’s at least the initial plan from New Jersey Devils head coach Peter DeBoer, as he told the Newark Star-Ledger on Tuesday.

“I don’t think so. I haven’t talked to him. I think we’re not going to treat anybody any differently than anybody else,” DeBoer said. “I think he’s proven with his conditioning and with the shape he’s come in—he looks fantastic—I don’t think he needs or expects that. The plan is to treat everybody the same.”

Speaking of not taking it easy on the old guys, DeBoer said he won’t keep Martin Brodeur from facing off against his son Anthony Brodeur in scrimmages. (And kudos to him for that, because such a scenario sounds as entertaining as a practice can get.)

“I haven’t thought about it. I don’t think we’ll avoid it,” DeBoer said. “At the same time, I think the fact that they’re both in camp competing in the same camp is amazing. You can probably count on one hand in pro sports the number of times that situation occurs. It’s pretty special.”

DeBoer discusses other Devils training camp storylines here.
