Ottawa Senators president Cyril Leeder has resigned from a number of city-related boards and committees, purportedly in response to a recent city decision that left Sens owner Eugene Melnyk’s casino plans scuttled.

Said a source to the Ottawa Sun: “When an organization pumps $200 million a year into the economy of a city the size of Ottawa, is responsible for thousand and thousands of direct and indirect jobs, and then donates millions annually to charity – then gets slapped in the face for all of that effort? [Mayor Jim Watson] probably broke the proverbial camel’s back.”

Melnyk had hoped his casino project would offset the “substantial losses” of the hockey club.

PS — Melnyk tweeted a link to the Ottawa Sun story, so apparently he’d like everyone to read it.

“When an organization pumps $200 million a year into the economy of a city the size of Ottawa,:

    Let me rephrase that:

When a Billionaire makes 100’s of millions of dollars owning a sports franchise, and wants to make a couple billion instead….

BTW, Casinos create POVERTY and Destroy Families! I am all for gambling in your city-but I have seen what it does first hand.

Maybe he can stop playing CSI Ottowa when a player gets hurt so he doesn’t waste more money??

Sounds like Ottowa got the same treatment they gave Alfie…

sounds to me like the guy who did the reporting about Melnyk’s questionable accounting practices made a real impression on the mayor and his constituents, besides when is the host city responsible for helping the franchise owner to siphon off more money from an additional source beyond the hockey team? Next team to be taken over by the league!
