Report: Leafs, Kadri settle on term, still apart on money

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Nazem Kadri haven’t inked a new contract yet, but it sounds like the two sides are getting closer. While it looks like there will still be some haggling regarding the money, both sides seem comfortable with a two-year “bridge” deal, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie and Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos.

The Maple Leafs are offering $5.7 million for those two years while Kadri wants $7 million during the same period, McKenzie reports.

Is this fairly significant breakthrough a matter of training camp approaching or could Mason Raymond’s PTO invite have something to do with it?

Either way, it certainly makes a difference that the team and 22-year-old forward have settled on the length of this next contract. With a reported $1.3 million difference of opinion, that’s not necessarily a huge gap to close (although you never know with contract negotiations).

The Leafs have a little under $5 million in cap space to work with, according to Cap Geek. Perhaps the Buds could manage to squeeze Kadri and Cody Franson in their budget when it’s all said and done?

In the meantime, Raymond will try to force his name into the conversation, too.
